When the Jaguars slapped the franchise tag on tight end Marcedes Lewis, he made an odd decision: He signed the one-year tender offer, but decided to hold out from training camp anyway.
But after giving it some thought, Lewis has decided to end his holdout and show up to camp on Monday. Lewis told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union that he’s not happy about playing this season on a one-year, $7.3 million contract, but he’ll do it if he has to.
“Basically they still are negotiating but I’m tired of not being with my team! And I need to be there...” Lewis said via text message.
Lewis was placed on the reserve/did not report list when he didn’t show up, and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said he thinks the team will fine Lewis for his failure to report. At $30,000 a day, Lewis could be fined $90,000 for missing three days.
Which means that for his objection to playing this year for $7.3 million, he’s now set to play this year for $7.2 million.
