Todd Heap signs with Cardinals

Todd Heap is heading home to Arizona.

Heap, the tight end who has played his entire 10-year NFL career with the Ravens, has signed with the Cardinals. Heap was born and raised in Arizona, was the state’s high school player of the year his senior year, and played his college ball at Arizona State.

The Ravens released Heap last week and he’s drawn interest from several teams, including the Jets. But he’s decided that Arizona is the place for him.

In 2010 Heap caught 40 passes for 599 yards and five touchdowns.

  1. Outstanding! Cardinals fans are happy to welcome Heap back home. We’ll see what he has left in the tank, but regardless he is an upgrade at the Cardinals traditionally weak TE depth chart.

  2. Just waiting for the other shoe to drop….Someone wake up Al. Remind him Dave Casper isn’t on the roster any-more and tell him to resign Zach Miller……

  3. I guess Rex isn’t going to drive him back to Newark Airport.

Must have been a great visit in New Jersey that he announced his signing while he is still in that cesspool.

Must have been as impressed with the state of the Jets franchise as Nnamdi was.

mmm,I thought everyone wanted to be a jet and play for Rex?

  4. If Heap can stay healthy, it’s a great pick up. As a Ravens fan it sucks to see him go, but we are going to let our young guys step in. 4 mil for a guy who rarely lasts an entire season is too much

  5. Big time player, makes all the catches, takes all the hits. Todd Heap is a true class act and will be sorely missed. Ravens fans are not taking kindly to this one.

  6. Of all their free agents the Ravens failed to sign this one is the one that will bite them in the rear!!!!!

  7. Great player but way too injury prone. I’m sure he hyper-extended his elbow answering the call or will when he signs the contract.

I’m sure there will still be HEEEEEEEAPPP chants when the Cards come to Baltimore this year.

  8. it’s funny how every free agent includes the jets, but nobody picks them except for guys who got the best offer from the jets…….the media is funny especially BSPN, who has everbody going to the Jets, and Pats.. You can’t help but laugh when they are wrong and wrong, and wrong again.

  9. Great pick up for the Cards. When Heap is 100% healthy he is similar to jason Witten; good blocker and catches anything thrown his way.

Can’t believe the Ravens let him go. He will do well in AZ.

  10. good luck todd. great guy, real professional football player. he has some left, the ravens have two second year te’s. i’m sure todd is going to help the cards.

  11. A class act, albeit injury prone. The Ravens wouldn’t have minded him back, but with two decent second year tight ends in the wings they simply couldn’t justify paying what Heap was earning. I suspect they hoped his price would drop if he lingered in the buyers market. Arizona got themselves a nice good- hands player. Ravens fans are just happy the Jets didn’t.

  12. Of all their free agents the Ravens failed to sign this one is the one that will bite them in the rear!!!!!

How is that? Yes, the Cards do play the Ravens in Baltimore this year, but that’s one game every four years. Much happier that he signed with the Cardinals instead of the Jets!

  13. Rex Ryan is such a clown. He should stick to whitening his teeth, being a poster child for failed Lap Banding, and drooling over stinky feet. Good move Todd Heap!

  14. Heap has developed into a very good blocker through the years, and he will also help the running game. He is also one hell of a human being. A few years ago – without much fanfare – he gave Franklin Square Hospital $1 million. Wishing him all the best in Arizona. He will me missed.

  15. I’m hoping this is one of those cases where it’s wiser to let a guy go a year too early than a year too late. Todd was a good Raven and a clutch receiver. Here’s hoping he has a year or two of health left in him for the hometown fans. He and Harbaugh always seemed to be at odds so maybe a change of scenery will be good for him.

  16. Heap has his ring and wants to go home.

Kolb sucking won’t be his problem as he’ll be retired in another year or two from now

  17. Wow – hard to see a guy like Heap go when he still has gas in the tank. I know we have capable replacements…but Heap is another solid person, solid professional, solid player. Thanks for the memories & good luck Todd!!!

…and p.s. – as further proof that Heap is a good, solid person is that he wasn’t swayed to sign with the loud-mouth, bombastic, profane, sexual deviant who leads the Jets.

  18. Rex, what happened here? I thought we were getting Nnamdi and Heap. Nada.

Oh well, I guess neither will play for the title this year….but Plaxico will.

All that is left Rex is to sign a decent CB to play opposite D. Revis, could be Cromartie or whoever….and get David Harris a long term contract.

  19. Love this addition! I can see big things happening now as long as Kolb can get some protection from the line. The run game should be better which will keep the secondary honest. Let’s go Cards!!! Going to be a good year!!!

  20. Good guy and good player in his prime but they would be lucky to play a full season with him. Injuries have a way of hitting Todd Heap lately, unfortunately. But when healthy a good target for Kolb

  21. As a Steeler fan, I’m not sorry to see him go (although Pitt does play the Cards this year). Flacco loses a huge target and security blanket. Always respected him as a player, made lots of big catches for the Ravens.

  22. Great signing by AZ – Heap gets to come home. They are astutely picking up players to help complement Kolb and to give him as many weapons as possible. If the O-line holds up, Kolb could be very good in AZ. If they had been able to retain DRC, they would have been that much better off. They did sign Richard Marshall away from Carolina, and he will be a capable replacement, although not an improvement over DRC, IMO. Maybe Marshall will have a career year in a new setting, and gets to play in a great stadium for their home games.

    What ring would that be?

Sad to see Todd go, but excited to see Dickson turn into a stud. I think Ozzie let him go at the right time.

Todd Heap does not have a ring. Last year the ravens were all or nothing. The goal was to get Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Ed Reed, Jarret Johnson, Matt Birk, and Kelly Greg the ring that they all want so badly and deserve. The Playoff Loss to pittsburgh hurt in so many ways because superbowl was the only option. The Team knew that they would never have the same group of guys in the locker room ever again, and were quoted saying that. Personally i felt cam cameron should of been fired. That team had the talent but the coaching held them back.

  25. One of my all time favorite Ravens. Class act all the way. Way underrated as a blocker. Great hands and big play ability. Don’t know how much he has left in the tank, but I wish him nothing but good.

My only regret is that he did not retire as a Raven. There is a spot in the Ravens ROH for Todd when he retires. He will be sorely missed.

  26. I may be biased as a ravens fan, but I’ve always liked heap and thought he was very underrated. Yes, he had injury issues, but when he was physically able, he showed up, played hard, and did exactly what he was supposed to. He’s always kept his nose clean and has character and work ethic. Congrats to the Cards, you got yourself a solid player.

  27. This thread is proof that Ravens fans are FAR cooler than Eagles fans.

    Eagles fans: AHHAHAHAAHHAHHA
    Ravens fans: Good luck, Todd!

If Anquan had to go anywhere, I’m glad he went to you.

  28. Heap has his ring and wants to go home.

For the record, Heap was drafted three months AFTER the Ravens won the Superbowl. He does NOT have a ring. Shannon Sharpe was the Ravens TE when they won the ring.

  29. Heap’s footwork isn’t were it has to be to be a JET
Yeah, you’re right! I mean, with all the multiple Superbowls the Jets have won, I guess he’s just not good enough…..

    Oh, wait,…………..

  30. Heap has been on the decline for a number of years………i love him but he is done…..

It is amazing when all these teams reach and take Ravens who are past their prime and think they can get anything out of them….it never works..

It’s the Ravens system, not the specific players……

    Cardinals… usual, are clueless!

  31. Please.dont even try the “best fit”. excuse…..the truth is..he wants to get the most money he can when he knows he doesn’t have much in the tank………sad!

  32. @theravenlives2
Lol I’m sure that dude was making fun of Rex Ryans foot fetish when he said that his footwork wasn’t good enough to be a JET. Just my guess though.
