John Harbaugh: I don’t care what Ryan Clark says about anything

Getty Images

Throughout the offseason, players on the Ravens and Steelers sniped at each other about their rivalry. But one Steeler sniped about Ravens-Steelers not being a rivalry at all. Steelers safety Ryan Clark said the Steelers have dominated the Ravens to such an extent that you can’t even call it a rivalry.

Today Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked what he thinks about that.

“Everybody is entitled to their opinion,” Harbaugh said. “There’s a saying by Voltaire: ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’ Truthfully, I don’t care what Ryan Clark says about anything. I’m sure he’ll say the same about me. Let’s put it this way: He’ll be very fired up to play [when the teams meet in Week One], I’m sure. We love being underestimated. So if the Steelers choose to underestimate us, we appreciate that.”

Clark may not think the Steelers and Ravens have a rivalry, but I think it’s about as good a rivalry as the NFL has right now. I know I’ll be fired up to watch them meet in the opener.

  1. Didn’t Clark say that 2 weeks ago? Nothing else to talk about in Baltimore? What about the Leach signing? What about Mason?

  2. I wonder if he cares about the forced fumble and the INT that Clark had in the divisional round? HAHAHA

  3. Clark’s an arrogant punk… it’s not like it’s versus the Browns, who get blown out regardless of who they face in the AFCN – every single game between the two is a nail-biter. I don’t care if the Steelers win 10-games straight… if all 10 games are classics, it’s a rivalry.

  4. Since the Stillers DID lose the Super Bowl (a game they were predicted to win by the famous Madden pre-play, I do not think they have anything to be bragging about these days.

  5. Yet oddly, you care enough to quote Voltaire (although the quote is attributed initially via a 1906 publication).

To retort with Voltaire: “Froth at the top, dregs at bottom, but the middle excellent.”

  6. The difference between Tomlin and Harbaugh…you would never hear Tomlin talk like that!

  7. Typical Raven, not knowing facts. It wasn’t Voltaire, it was Evelyn Beatrice Hall who said that.

Quit trying to sound smart and go back to game planning how to lose to Ben again

  8. I think both teams will be 12-4 or 13-3. I think they’ll split the season. Both lose to the Pats and we lose one each to the AFC South. Then we will make the Ravens our bitch again in the playoffs!
That said, if I had to pick another team to root for, it would be the Ravens. They’re like our talented little brother. They just can’t beat us when it counts. I hate’em, but respect the hell out of them. I wish Harbaugh was our coach!

  9. really?after how many weeks ago that Clark said that?lol..wow..i can only say Clark is more right than wrong..how many times have the Steelers been underestimated by the Ravens and most everyone who does the lines when they play each other.and who always comes out on top?yea the Stillers.so yinz just keep spouting off hahaha…

    Steelers are setting themselves up.

how many times have we heard that comment in the past?

  10. i hope our new fullback Vonta Leach gets a chance to blow this punk up. it would be like a mack truck getting into a head on collision with a smart car. Week 1 CAN’T WAIT!

  11. Well as mentioned, Im sure Ryan Clark, and the steelers dont care about anything you have to say.
Ryan Clark is right, its really not a rivalry since the ravens couldnt beat the steelers when it counted. Thats what counts. Week 1 wont mean jack to this steeler fan because there are 15 more after it including the playoffs and SB. Plus they still have to come to Pitt. Im sure opening day will be like the SB for raven fans. Should be concentrating on getting your team ready for the opener and not Ryan Clarks comments. Put a sock in it Johnny, Boy!

  12. Every year in camp the Ravens got a lot to say about the Steelers! When Steelers camp comes around its about the Steelers! I see why the Steelers kinda own them in the close games they play. The Steelers be in their head from camp till they play!

  13. Actually Southpaw, Clark is probably the most fan friendly player on the team. I’ve been to Steelers training camp several times, and he’s always signing autographs, talking and joking with fans. Far and beyond what other players do. Hardly a punk.

  14. I guess the Pats – Steelers isn’t a rivalry either because the PATS have dominated the Steelers and especially Ryan! – must be something in the name Ryan that causes you to open mouth insert foot…

  15. @hines86for6: If he wasn’t smart, he wouldn’t have known the quote to begin with. So it’s not really an attempt. The only thing Mike Tomlin is quoting are lines from Shaft. Ryan Clark is a chump. Real players do their talking on the field, and the Ravens will have a lot to say on September 11th. It’s our time now. Enjoy your Superbowl hangover. I know I will. :-}

  16. Why does ANYONE care what Ryan Clark says? He is a below average player- which begs the question, why do we ALWAYS have to hear about him (seriously, I’m pretty sure he gets more media coverage than Ed Reed)? The answer: because the Steelers make the NFL more money than any other team, so we every player on their team gets way overrated/ talked about by the media. Interestingly enough, it also happens to be a huge part of the reason why Ravens/Steelers games are rigged. Weird how Clark didn’t mention that when talking about the rivalry (your right, Ryan, it wouldn’t be a rivalry if the games weren’t rigged, because the Ravens would always win).

  17. Vonta Leach is going to end Ryan Clark’s day, I’m not too worried about a guy who would be a nobody if not for Troy. Week 1 all of this posturing is over and done with, and as Ray said “At some point, you’ve got to buckle the chinstrap and just play”.

  18. Talk is cheap.
    Harbaugh is right.
Clark can say whatever he chooses.
I just can’t wait for week one!
Give this blog a glance fellas, the latest topic is debatable!

    A saying by Voltaire? Really?

Nice attempt at sounding smart, Jim.

    ———-

I think his name is John.

  20. A hammer and a nail ain’t a rivalry…… :-).

A lot of talk going around, but until Flacco can beat the Steelers when it matters, it is all talk.

  21. How about neither team did anything to improve themselves which means neither team will go far in the playoffs, if they make the playoffs

    —————-

True, but only because she was the author of Voltaire’s biography, and was using the line to describe Voltaire’s belief system. Close enough? Yeah, definitely.

  23. This doesn’t surprise me, the sidekick always has the most to say.
Ryan Clark played along side Sean Taylor and Troy Polamalu!?
I’m happy he got so lucky… way to go Robin.

  24. What Clark fails to realize is the teams have split the regular season the last two years. And pretty much every single game has been VERY close.

I think Ryan Clark has spent too much time trying to get his name out in the public, participating on early morning talk shows… because he obviously hasn’t been reading a dictionary… or he’d know that Ravens and Steelers is the epitome of rivalry since before Clark was even in the league.

  25. This is the exact type of thing you’d say if you were in a heated rivalry with another team.

  26. Harbaugh’s a chump. Commenting on what players say is a losing situation. Not only is he intellectually derelict in his thinking, he will be fired soon if he can’t beat the Steelers.

Look for him to join his brother very soon in the Bay area.

  27. The Jets talked a lot of trash before their week 1 game against the Ravens last year. That hit by Ray Lewis at the end of the game was awesome. It would be great if he could do that to Roethlesberger or Ward. Or Vonta Leach could mess up Clark that would be fun too.

  28. Hahaha, all you steelers fans do is try to downgrade the ravens….guess what, your record against the patriots is uglier than the steelers offseason headlines. Ryan Clark…..just try to not get trucked by Ray Rice repeatedly this year

  29. What about all the smack Suggs talks? What about how “damn good” Flacco thinks he is? Well, Suggs is top notch. I’d take him in a heartbeat. Joe Cool folds like a lawnchair!
The only way he beats the Steelers is against a 3rd stringer! The rivalry is a real rivalry! The best in the NFL. Period!

  30. @jimmysee:
And the Cardinals were predicted to win by the famous Madden pre-play.

Making it to the Super Bowl is an accomplishment in its own. Until the Ravens can beat the Steelers, they can brag all they want.

We won the AFC Championship last year. Somehow I don’t think standing pat would hurt us.
    ***************

    @dspyank2k11 …

For people who don’t care about the Steelers, you all sure do flock to our threads to mouth off.

  32. Far as I can tell the only thing the Steelers won last year was the right to be embarrassed by the Packers on international television. Enjoy those sour grapes Steeltown!

  33. Sounds like the Ravens are tired of being the ugly little brother to the older, more successful, attention getting big brother Steelers.

It’s ok Ravens, mommy and daddy love you too (just not as much).

  34. Go ahead and get caught up in yourselves, while the team with the future 2011 AFC Rookie of The Year, A.J. Green tears up the AFC Central. Yeah, that’s right. You heard me.

  35. Mike Tomlin has stated on several occasions that he thinks its the best rivalry in the NFL. The NFL itself beleives it is a great rivalry. The steeler organization throughly beleives its the best rivalry in the NFL because they wear a throwback uni just about every time they play against the Ravens at home. Clark doesnt have a clue.

  36. “steelersfbfan says: Aug 1, 2011 7:00 PM

The difference between Tomlin and Harbaugh…you would never hear Tomlin talk like that!”

No the difference is Tomlin was given a SB team, John is building one. Tomlin is a nobody…

  37. Clark isn’t all that great so he should just keep his mouth shut he’s played with two safties his whole career…..the late great Sean Taylor and Troy Palamalu…..Hell they could make my fat ass look somewhat decent ok maybe not but they can take a below average safety like Clark and turn him into an Above Average safety.

  38. Clark knows it’s a rivalry. It may not show in the standings but when you watch those two teams play it’s beyond intense. Every play is all out and every play is important. Neither team will be taking off any plays. Let’s Tee It Up! Are you ready for some football?

    GO STEELERS!

  39. @tyler200829

Ryan Clark won’t have to worry about getting trucked by Rice, he’ll just FF him again in the playoffs.

  40. I wouldnt exactly call Tomlin a nobody. He was given alot of the pieces but he put his 2 cents in to help the steelers win the sb in 2009. If John Harbough is Building a sb team, he might want to start at qb again.

  41. why the hell do all you commentors go off about the coach responding to players comments and saying its stooping low? He isnt responding to a player he is responding to the reporter asking the questions. seriously. Think.

  42. @raqaiw

Wow! the loss still hurts huh. Its ok it may have ended in sour grapes much like the ravens season did 2 weeks earlier AGAIN to the steelers.(well actually every year)11 yrs in counting.
But them sours grapes turned into fine wine in 06 and 09 for the steelers. As for the raisens, well thats just what them sour grapes have turned into in baltimore by now.

  43. @steelcitystud,

Thank you for not being an ignorant troll like the rest of your buddies. I respect you guys as well and this year is setting up for some great games between us. Little bitter that we play so early though, was looking forward to a late season match up with division and playoff implications.

  44. Let’s face it, boys.
If you’re a Steeler fan, you would take Ray Ray, Suggs, Reed, Ngata or Ray Rice in a heartbeat!
If you’re a Raven fan, you would take Harrison, Hines, Polamalu, Woodley or Heath Miller in a heartbeat.
What’s the difference between these teams? Ben Roethlisberger! He plays, we win!
I like Flacco, but he’s the weak link in the rivalry!

  45. Ryan Clark average? 0nly reason he dosent get the hype is hes on the #1 defence YEARLY.. IN A SECONDARY WITH A FUTURE HALL OF FAMER #43..LOL how many Ravens has he K.O’D? RATBIRDS gave up on Heap & Mason.. whos left? TJ? and Rice? (not jerry either) Steelers already had the Defensive edge..now give us √ on the offensive side too..like Vonta Leach is gona make a difference..Really? if you’re riden with that bet ill raise you no doubt

I would take all those guys except Harrison, I could never route for that clown.

  48. bmorelikeme :
He may be a clown, but he’s a beast on the field. Personally, as long as the players aren’t sex offenders or child molesters, I don’t care about their personal life or stupid statements.

  49. If a team beats you nearly 70% of the time (75% when Ben plays against Flacco) is it really a rivalry. If you want to think so that is cool.
