Manny Lawson lands in Cincy

Linebacker Manny Lawson, the 22nd overall pick in the 2006 draft, spent five years with the 49ers.  He’ll now spend at least one with the Bengals.

Per a league source, the Bengals have agreed to terms with the unrestricted free agent.  It’s a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Lawson started every game for San Francisco in each of the last two seasons.  He has 14.5 career sacks.

  1. Manny is really best suited as a 4-3 OLB. He’s never developed a consistent pass rush but has great coverage skills. Hopefully he can flourish under Zimmer in a scheme that better fits his abilities.

  2. OMG, I’m hoping that it was for good money and not just to follow Clements. And if it wasn’t for good money and he chose not to return to SF, he must have been aware that Aldon Smith was his replacement.

  3. I love how everyone is quick to hate on the Bengals. Last time I checked there are only 12 teams that can qualify for the playoffs and one winner of the super bowl. That leaves 20 teams that could be considered sub par. Chickity check yo’ self befo’ you wreck you’ self.

    Who Dey!

  4. Lawson is solid in pass coverage and run support. He’s not flashy but he’s a good, steady LB.

Cincy took advantage of the 49ers’ stupidity and got a good solid addition to their LB corps.

  5. If all it took was 3 mil to keep Manny in San Francisco I don’t know why the 49ers didn’t resign him. Was he great? No. But he certainly did a lot of important things well. Having said that, I have to question any player who freely goes to Cincy.

  6. Still it’s gotta hurt to be a former first round pick and all you can get from your first free agency is a one year deal.

  7. good pick up! manny can do it all, only thing he has to work on is sacking the qb…nate clements was a good pick up too, 2 niners I didnt want to see go

  8. 20 years as a 49er faithful… through every up and down, this is one of the final straws with their past 7 seasons of “rebuilding”…WTF?!

  9. All joking aside, the Bengals have made some solid, under-the-radar moves in free agency this year by snagging Thomas Howard, Nate Clements and now Manny Lawson. It’s just a shame for them the Deuce Lutui deal fell through.

  10. He’s no good anyway. A complete waste of a first round pick. 34 Olb who can’t rush the passer. Stay out of trouble on Cincy Manny.

  11. Have heard that Manny was better suited for a 4-3, not a 3-4? Wasn’t that what he played in college, anyway… Good pickup for the Bengals.

  12. Another chapter in Balke’s plan which he is not telling anyone about. Good luck Manny!

Where is he going to play. Didn’t they sign Howard too. What a mess…

Not a mess at all. Thomas Howard replaces an injured Keith Rivers (wrist..out indefinitely) and Lawson starts in place of Maulaluga who moved to the middle. Another solid pick-up by the Bengals and one that was much needed. Watch out for Dontay Moch (rookie from Nevada) taking over by mid-season once he gets his feet wet in Zimmer’s system, which is probably why the Bengals only offered Manny a one year deal.

It’s not that the Deuce Lutui deal “fell through”. Deuce, himself, fell through the floor. Within 2 years out of the game, Lutui will be 5 bills or better.

  15. Again, I preface this with “I know Mike Brown and the front office suck” BUT to keep it positive for my Bengals…….They have made some fairly decent moves in the past few days after losing J. Jo. Just trying to help my fellow Bengal fans with some positive views!

  16. Why is Cincy picking up these freakishly athletic but undersized DEs to play at LB? This makes ZERO sense!

They drafted DE Michael Johnson 3 years ago, who is best suited for 3-4 OLB than anything else. They draft LB Dontay Moch, who is also best suited for OLB in the 3-4. They pick up Thomas Howard, who has always played LB in the 4-3, but would probably be loads better in the 3-4, and then they sign UDFA DE Keith Darbut, a collegiate DE (like Moch) who ran a sub 4.4 (like Moch) and was converted to LB.

I understand liking a certain type of player, but haven’t we seen from the Philadelphia pint-sized RB fiasco (L. McCoy, D. Lewis, D. Locke, C, Cooper—-leading to the walking out of N. Devine), that having different types of player will add to the team? This just makes no sense.

  17. I think the Bengals, despite the horrid off season, are doing a pretty nice recovery job so far. 3 starters on defense signed.. and an OL is on his way today (watch for it). They aren’t done…. looks like people may have to adjust their 0-16 Bengals predictions.

  18. They picked him up becuase it just came to light that Keith Rivers has mysteriously broken his wrist and will be out til mid October (if you can trust the Bengals injury report-which is rarely, if ever truthful) so they may need a guy to play rivers spot for a year while they evaluate in their own stupid Bengal way if Rivers will ever be back…his contract is drawing to a close….

OMG. dude learn football. Lawson will play the SAM. Again there needs to be a football IQ test to be able to post on PFT.

Yeah.. adding a LB is a mess. MORON!!

    “Cincy will compete this yr”

Sure they will, 16 times, like every other team.
Whether they actually win any remains to be seen.

  21. This is a Marvin Lewis signing. Marvin liked Lawson coming out of school, and nearly nabbed him in the ’06 draft.

We’ll see what he’s got five years on.

Zimmer has got some real athletes to play with this year with Michael Johnson, Dontay Moch and now Lawson.

    Could be interesting to watch…….

  22. People spend so much time “trying” to be funny and ignoring the facts. Bengals D has been top 12 in the NFL two of the past three seasons. Zim’s D is not the problem.

  23. yea the Bengals D is def not the problem but were gonna have to be great this year on D if we wanna win. Because honestly I hate starting rookie qb’s even tho I think Dalton will be good in years to come.

  24. You 49er fans kill I recall, you were pathetic last year as well. Bengal fans are used to being abused, but you know very little about the team we will field beyond what you read or hear in the Huffington Post or similar! Yes, Manny was a get for Marvin. We’ll see if he was right. Clements, Ohio State boy…good for the team from a fan standpoint, at least after losing JJ, even if a little long in the tooth. We can talk about how they will do, but moving to the Bengals doesn’t necessarily rule out success. Remember we won the AFC North (OBVIOUSLY not the pathetic division that the NFC West is…winner has a LOSING record??) two years ago with an undefeated division record. Palmer wasn’t a star that year and neither was Ochoidiot..they won with running game (Benson) and D. I’ll take my chances with Dalton (remember Matty Ice as a rookie) as he has a brain and has performed for several years in a trying situation. Again, I’m used to the abuse, but these are solid pickups for a team that is limited by Mikey boy Brown…whom I am convinced that Paul would disown! Would you rather have Andy Dalton or Alex Smith….wow give me Dalton and couple him with AJ Green on O! Again, I’ll take my chances vs Alex Smith.

  25. An the bengals schedule is a lot easier to previous years. last year we opened with New England 🙁 but this year our first 4 games are : @cleveland @denver then San Fran and buffalo at home. I dont see why we can’t be 4-0 out the gate 😉
