When Ryan Williams was drafted high in the second round this season by Arizona, there was some thought that Beanie Wells could be the odd man out in the Cardinals backfield.
Instead, last year’s starter Tim Hightower was dealt to Washington. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has made it clear that Wells, not Williams, will be the team’s starter.
“I think he’s ready to take that role. We’ll see,” Whisenhunt said Wednesday via Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. Earlier this week, the coach said, “This is what he wanted. Clearly he’s the guy.”
Matt Leinart was the guy at quarterback at this time last year too, so Wells has to prove he’s worthy of the new role. The most important thing he can do in camp is maintain his current health.
“You’re not going to get many chances in this game, especially in this business,” Wells said. “You get labeled. Quickly. As I know.”
