Bucs continue to believe grass isn’t greener in free agency

The Buccaneers re-signed Tim Crowder to a two-year contract on Friday, which shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Tampa has focused on retaining their own players this offseason, showing little to no interest in other free agents. The only outside free agent they have signed was Atlanta punter Michael Koenan.

“By re-signing Davin Joseph, I didn’t have to go out and sign a guard that may have been more popular outside the team. The grass isn’t greener. We want to keep our guys here,” G.M. Mark Dominik said, via the Tampa Tribune.

Dominik points out that a lot of teams spent less over the last few weeks. While Tampa showed some interest in tackle Doug Free, Dominik’s approach has remained cautious.

“When you step back and look at the free-agency class, and we all talk about it after the fact, it’s hard to buy a championship in the NFL. It really is. So our belief is to try to keep as many of our guys here as we can,” Dominik said.

We can’t really argue. The Packers and Steelers got to the Super Bowl last year using the same approach. Dominik doesn’t plan to change.

“We stayed the course, we’re going to stay the course, and I feel out there from the fans that they’re excited about these young guys,” Dominik said.
