Giants spokesman: “Rebuild my ass!”

AP

Back in the days when Joe Namath roamed New York, the Jets were known as the unruly upstarts and the Giants were the quiet, classy team.

Some of that perception remains, but Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon has been doing his best to blur those lines one tweet at a time. He regularly mocks the Jets, and took to Twitter Wednesday night to counter the perception from Giants fans the team is falling apart.

Some of our favorite quotes or exchanges:

1. Hanlon: “Seems we should ship the Lombardi trophy to 3-4 training camp sites tomorrow and let em flip to see who keeps it.”

2.  From fan: “All teams need to rebuild at one point, I’m not going to panic until the season begin.”

Hanlon’s response: “Re-build my ass! I got your re-build.”

3.  Fan: “The Giants are making barely any noise while the Eagles are ‘the dream team.”’

Hanlon: “A lot noisemakers end up in the ditch. . . . Typically we make our noise in Jan-February.”

(Definitely not December the last two years.)

4. Fan: “On paper they ARE worse. No matter who signs your checks.”

Hanlon: “We don’t play on paper. You know what you can do w/ that paper?”

5. Fan: “Can you say definitively the Giants are better than last year?”

Hanlon: “Can you say we’re worse, knucklehead?”

6. Fan: “Giants off-season can be summed up w/ one word: Debacle.”

Response: “Thanks Lombardi. Cause I know you know.”

7. Hanlon: “This is great. We usually get to play two regular season games before people tell us we aren’t worth a s—.”

And finally, this morning . . .

8. Hanlon: “I can’t believe it. The sun is shining.”

We find Hanlon’s salty responses hilarious and actually agree with the sentiment. New York’s defense should be very good in year two of Perry Fewell’s system, and the offense has enough weapons if Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham stay healthy. They can win the division.

In the meantime, the Giants-Eagles rivalry could challenge Packers-Bears, Ravens-Steelers, and Jets-Patriots as the most heated of the upcoming season.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    What? I doubt it. If “good Rex” shows up and plays for the skins, the Giants could very easily be last in the division
  2. I for one think the Giants have a great chance of winning the Division (not even a Giants fan). Not to knock the Eagles, but can and anyone name any big off season moves the Packers or Steelers maid last off season?
    Response: “Thanks Lombardi. Cause I know you know.”
    ———
    Classic…lol
  3. I love the brashness from the Giants or anyteam. However, it would mean more from someone who was on the field on gameday.
  4. Hanlan knows where bread is buttered !!
    That being said, the Gmen have been pretty lame through out this free agent frenzy….
  5. I don’t understand the picture associated with this story ? Just more Eagles fan bashing? maybe they should put up a picture of Pat Hanlon or a Giant. just sayin.
  6. As a Giants fan, I’m trying to keep things in perspective. But you have to look at the facts. We lost to Philly twice last year, they’ve made a ton of additions and we’ve added a center and lost two of Eli’s favorite targets. Hope we can look back at this and laugh in January…
  7. Too many Chicken Little Giants fans right now. As a diehard Giants fan, it makes me sick.
    As always, thanks for saying exactly what needs to be said, PH. Every REAL Giants fan knows that we play our best football when the entire world is against us. Nothing makes me happier than the spotlight being on the garbage-green organizations surrounding us…
  8. His comments are right (for the most part – the Giants haven’t made noise in January-February for a few years now and it was an even longer time before that).
    BUT, for an organization that is constantly referred to as the “classiest organization in football”, it doesn’t seem like any team employee (outside of a player/coach) should be taking this kind of stuff on twitter. Let the players do the trash-talking if they want. Show some professionalism.
    Keep in mind if a regular team employee from teams like the Jets, Raiders, Eagles, etc. did something like this, of course all you would hear is that that organization has no class whatsoever and that attitude is bred throughout the building.
  9. Worthless prediction from a non-Eagles fan: If Vick stays healthy, the Eagles will sweep the Giants this season.
    And no, the Giants-Eagles “rivalry” is nowhere near as intense as Ravens-Steelers.
  10. Always good to see Philly fan punching some old guy in the face. The rest of the day can only go down from here. Thanks profootballtalk!!
  11. i dont mind not signing him.
    Smith wasnt worth that much money. watch Hakeem Nicks fill his void very well.
    i think Smith is the best slot wr in the game, but he wants #1 wr money.
    the Giants have enough to move on and not deal with paying him.
    if he was healthy (no microfracture last year) i can guarantee we wouldve signed him ASAP.
    its a dirty game, but it is what it is.
    the defense should be miles better and the offense will keep doing its thing.
    you dont need ;star receivers’……look at the pats superbowls, saints superbowls etc.
    even the steelers win superbowls with just hines ward and some other joe blows.
    trust me……Hakeem Nicks & Bradshaw will be top 3-5 at their respective positions for this year anbd Smith will be an after thought
  12. Huh. Insulting your customers. Interesting. I’ve never heard of that as a marketing strategy.
  13. That’s my boy in the picture. DieHard. That was on the front page of the NY daily news the next day. He carries that newspaper everywhere with him. I love the livestrong bracelet.
  14. Yes, I will say they definitively got worse… without a doubt… knucklehead.
    Umenyiora refuses to play.
    Shaun O’ Hara is gone. David Baas is a average replacement, at best.
    Rocky Bernard, Rich Seubert, Steve Smith, and Shawn Andrews – Gone.
    Barry Cofield is gone, once again replaced by an average Gabe Watson.
    They resigned Kiwanuka, Jacobs, and Bradshaw. Yippee.
    Oh, and their top draft pick is injured.
    So, yes, without doubt they are worse.
  15. “In the meantime, the Giants-Eagles rivalry could challenge Packers-Bears, Ravens-Steelers, and Jets-Patriots as the most heated.”
    That the Saints-Falcons Rivalry isn’t on here is a joke. The NFC East is, as usual, an over-hyped conference that is well past its prime.
  16. I’m a Cowboys (that’s cowgirls, cowpies, blowboys, etc. to all of you haters) but I have tremendous respect for Pat Hanlon. Has always been a straight shooter.
    I remember a few years ago when they lost in Dallas and he was on NFL radio the next day and was asked “What happened in the game yesterday?” His answer was the most honest I have ever heard from any NFL player/coach/executive ever; “They kicked our butts, that’s what happened”.
    Do BS, excuses, no sugar coating it, no shoulda, coulda, woulda; just an honest answer.
    Great guy.
  17. As an Eagles fan I’ll certainly admit that players acquisitions don’t always work out the way you’d like them to. Nothing is guaranteed.
    But the fact remains that the Giants didn’t actually do anything to improve their team. This guy can curse at people all wants and it doesn’t change that fact.
    As an Eagles fan that makes me happy.
  18. That being said, the Gmen have been pretty lame through out this free agent frenzy….
    ——————-
    remeber the giants started out OVER the cap. so they need to pick and choose wisely.
    I’m not happy about the Steve smith loss, but if the Giants thought they were only going to get half a season out of him, i can see why they weer hesitant to try and sign him and really put themselves in a pinch.
    I’m not a giant apologist, but i am also trying to be realistic. The giants were a 4th quarter collapse away from winning the division last year. so its not like they needed a whole lot, plus we already lost smith for most of the year last year and boss was always hurt anyway. we got a big upgrade on the line that can only help how putrid the short game last year.
    i expect a return to dominant D and a nasty run game.
  19. I have been a Giants fan since the early seventies when they rivaled the Matt Millen Lions for incompetence. Pat Hanlon’s only job is to tell Giants fans it’s raining when they are getting pissed on. He has zero credibility. Bravado from someone who never straps on his helmet always rings hollow. Mimicking the bloated chimp HC from the Jets doesn’t win the team a single game. Wellington is rolling over in his grave.
  20. Who ever decided to give Coughlin extension money
    before paying free agents, should be FIRED !!!!
    Tommy Boy never really tried to get Plax back.
    It should have been part of his extension package.
    If plax doesn’t come, then you go Tom…………
  21. I’m a Giants fan…but… he’s right when he says the Giants are not rebuilding. They’ve lost O’Hara, Seubert, Smith, Coefield, Grant, Johnson, Osi isn’t playing, Plax didn’t return, and the rookie CB is out a few months, and they haven’t received as much as a 4th round draft pick in return. That’s not rebuilding, that’s falling apart. The WRs are worse, O Line worse, DL thinner, LB unimproved, secondary thinner. At least they brought in another punter. They’ve made no significant additions besides a center. How is it that the Giants so mismanaged their cap space ? What was their plan to improve their team when the lockout ended ? The Giants have had the worst off-season of any team in the NFL. This once proud and stable franchise is coming off as dysfunctional. As a Giants fan, I’m not excitied about this team this year. Yes, they have any easy early schedule which should bring a 6-1 record and false hope. I don’t see them winning more than 8 games this season.
  22. Don’t feel bad Pat. I’ve never met a fan who didn’t think they knew everything. That of course, is why coaches coach and fans…well…sit and watch.
  23. “Stick that in your smipe and poke it…” Stay classy Hanlon, and pass the pipe around.
  24. Giants spokesman: “Rebuild my ass!”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Why, does it take a pounding and need rebuilding?
  25. After being bent over the sofa by the rest of the league in recent times, the rebuild might be in order.
  26. Nobody challenges the rivalry of the Bears and the Packers.
    1st and 2nd in the NFC last year.
    1st and 2nd in World Championships
    1st and 2nd in players in the Hall of Fame.
  27. Hanlon, stop posting on this site under this username, bhindenemylines. We all know a cover post by the ring of it. Now go back to rebuilding your ass.
    Really horrible comparison. The Steelers made it to the SB, and the Packers won the SB. In other words, they were already elite teams. The Giants have missed the playoffs two years in a row and have lost how many games straight to the Eagles now? Completely different story. Btw, the same argument is what the “knucklehead” should have shot back at Hanlon (in a condensed 140 character version of course).
  29. Browns vs. Steelers, errr I mean Ravens vs. Steelers rivalry! That rivalry should have an * next to it, like Barry Bonds homerun record! That Ravens vs. Steelers rivalry is nowhere near what the real Browns vs. Steelers rivalry was, and I bet most Browns and Steelers fans would agree on this!
  30. Wow, this guy is the spokesperson? Really?!?!
    Fans are concerned with the team and it’s direction and the best this knuckle-head can do is mock them? And he was rather bad at it too.
    I was waiting for the line “Naa, Naa, Naa I am rubber and you are glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.”
    This guy should be bagging fries, no offense JaMarcus
    Your friend sounds awesome. I’ll be sure to be on the lookout for someone with cargo pants, a livestrong bracelet and a newspaper at all times and ask him how it feels hitting someone old enough to be his father.
  32. The giants have enough core pieces that they *could* win the division, but you have to admit they’ve had a horrible offseason.
  33. As a Giant fan I must say that I get pissed when I see “giants fans” stooping to the level that I have seen. Taking shots as Steve Smith like some have.
    How about a little faith in Reese, a guy who in the past has done a tremendous job finding guys like Bradshaw, Boss, and a slew of other ‘under the radar’ players who turned out to be real good. What makes you think he’s not able to do it again?
    Yes, ON PAPER, the sheagles look damn good, but when is the last time the pre-season favorite won it all. The fact is the high profile teams have a target on them the whole season. When the Giants won 42 they were a wild card team, with the Pats being the favorite, as were the Packers last year.
    There are no gimm’es in the NFC East. The skins, cowboys, g-men, and eagles will always play each other tough and almost always are close games.
    We still have a very consistent qb (who’s receivers dropped an uncanny number of balls las year), nicks and manningham (and keep your eyes on cruz), as well as Bradshaw and Jacobs.
    Not to mention a defense that I think will be very good.
    I honestly don’t think Vick will last the entire season and what will happen then?
    Give’em hell Hanlon!!
  34. New York’s defense should be very good in year two of Perry Fewell’s system, and the offense has enough weapons if Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham stay healthy. They can win the division.
    ____________________________________
    Who’s gonna protect the other Manning brother? They got rid of about half their o-line. The offense isn’t as good and the D “should be very good” but they won’t be.
  35. To the guy who was talking about the Bears vs Packers rivalry, they have had some great games for sure. Problem is for the most part the country outside those two areas doesn’t care. Thats why i think Jets vs Pats is number 1 now. Jets being from the biggest market and everyone hates the PAts over the last decade. So i think that adds a lot of interest.
    As far as the post, i don’t understand why this guy hasn’t been fired. This guy is the “spokesman” ? And he is telling off fans ?? Thats real “classy”. Perhaps he should put some pads on and back his words up.
    As far as rebuilding, I think the Giants are part of a group of 6-7 teams that never have to really “rebuild” I would call this year most likely a down year for the giants, but I think they will “reload” next season.
    They are going to have a bunch of problems on the Oline. Loosing the two in the middle of that line is going to hurt bad and Bass is NOT Ohara. I think the loss of the Tightend is going to hurt more than people will let on. Boss is a guy who killed NFC east teams. Also i am not impressed with the D either. They still have Tuck who is a great player but i expect less from a disgruntled Osi. Kiwi is garbage, and i am tired of hearing about how great he will be someday. Whens someday ? Paul could be good, I dunno. We’ll see. They lost a LOT with Coefield. He killed my Eagles. I don’t think they are close to filling that hole. The linebackers are amoung the worst in the NFL. And the secondary, while it has ok players i think, and this is imo, the players they have don’t fit the system they play. I think the rookie does, but it probably won’t be till october till he is even ready to start.
    My prediction is still 6-10 for the giants, but a good 6-10 (they will be in most games and will play teams very tough) in the end the team is weaker on D and by letting olinemen go and sarting players like Beatty put a QB who throws ints when under pressure is a bad situation. I like the Rivalry the Birds and Giants had a few years ago. Maybe this year the Giants can win one against the birds. It has been 6 in a row since we lost.
    Oh and whats the point of the picture ??? Seriously. It doesn’t even make sense. Besides i remember reading that kid got hit by like 5 Giants fans and that the Local paper picked that picture to post even though the kid was defending himself. Perhaps the the commenter who knows the guy can enlighten us as to what happened. .
    Totally delusional Giants fan.
    The Eagles game was week 15. Eagles lost 2 more games and still won the division. How exactly were the Giants one 4th quarter away?
    Why don’t you blame the whole thing on your punter, like your classy HC did? The guy is there to punt, while the other 10 clowns in blue are supposed to tackle. Yet, there’s Tommy Boy, out on the field chastising his punter.
    I hope Mara runs onto the field Week 17 this year and does the same to him.
    That’s not really funny… It’s like when an 80 year old tries to say something funny and just ends up being corny.
    Or better yet than an 80 year old- replace that with “certain Jets fans that post on here”
    so it would look like:
    It’s like when certain Jets fan that post on here tries to say something funny and just ends up being corny.
    See how thats better and makes more sense?
  38. Lets don’t crown the Eagles yet!! Giants are still a hella defense. Eagles still has a new D coordinator, and Football is a game of matchups.. The guys they added on defense might not be able to matchup against ours. The Giants were pitching a shutout until the collapse late in the 3rd quarter and thats was with the Eagles talented WR’s.. Thats probably why they went after Steve Smith(To their credit) I don’t like this what JR has done either, but I am still not ready to wave the white flag either… We are still loaded on defense, and at the WR position.. Hopefully some of our youngins will show up this year. Eagles gotta a little winning streak now, but at one time we had a 9 game winning streak… We will see… It’s going to be a fun year!!
  39. I don’t know who is going to win the division.
    Being an Eagles fan and watching them stack up, I am tented to say: home field advantage.
    But you have to play and anything could happen. On paper no doubt the Eagles are the most improved team in the NFL. On the field… it’s too early to say
    In the mean time, I love me some football!
    Go Eagles!
  40. Jet fan here.
    LMAO
    Thank you NYG for taking the term “team turmoil” and running with it.
    First Boss, then your savior S. Smith.
    What about Osi?
  41. I can’t believe the Mara family is putting up with the sort of crap Hanlon is dishing out. No matter what the fans are saying or suggesting, there is no excuse for Hanlon getting into a pissing match with them. None. That is completely unprofessional behavior. That guy should be fired, pronto.
    You have to be kidding me? You obviously have no clue about the Eagles or the Giants if you’re saying their rivalry can “challenge” those above? The only one above that may be more intense of a rivalry is Ravens-Steelers, and that just came about over the past couple of years. Bad blood b/t the Eagles & Giants has been going on for decades….Even Eagles fans have to agree with me on that point.
  43. “Thanks Lombardi. Cause I know you know.” Priceless. Yeah, fantasy football has made everyone a player personnel director. Even so, it would make more sense for Giants fans to at least get through a couple of games before deciding their season is lost.
  44. Never write when you can speak, never speak when you can nod, never nod when you can wink. Or in the case of BB, mumble.
    —————————-
    Agreed. Just because Coughlin and Reid don’t jaw like Rex Ryan at each other doesn’t make Jets-Pats a better rivalry.
    Eagles-Giants have been equally powerful rivals for the past ten or more years. Can you name a game where there wasn’t fists thrown on the field at some point? I can’t.
    I’ll concede Ravens-Steelers as the best rivalry in football right now, but Eagles-Giants is the obvious second.
  46. Anybody who has ever seen an episode of Giants Online knows this is actually pretty tame for Pat. For the uninitiated, he usually reserves these retorts for the media. Also, you would have to meet his foil, “reporter” Anthony Fucilli to truly understand what gets him going. “Stay Golden Pat, Stay Golden!”
  47. I would put Giants-Eagles right behind Steelers-Ravens as the #1 #2 best rivalries in football.
    The Pats and Bears are historic but its been along time since people outside of those fan bases have gotten excited to watch those 2 teams play.
    And Pats-Jets are really good games now but are relatively new. I know they have always had a rivalry but they usually were one sided affairs. The last few years is the 1st time in decades that both teams were actually good and exciting to watch at the same time.
    The Eagles and Giants however have both been good for a while and nearly every single game they’ve played has gone down to the wire except a few. They both also draw a lot of attention outside of their fan bases. People enjoy watching these 2 teams play even if its just see them lose.
    But the Steelers-Ravens imo is the best. Every year the are fighting each for the division title. Unlike Eagles-Giants who also gotta deal with the Cowboys and Packers-Bears who have to deal with the Vikings. Which makes those game more exciting bc they count more. Also they are 2 of the most physical teams in the league so hitting is spectacular. Plus the national coverage those teams get and the hype and build up the media gives these games builds up anticipation.
    Thats my 2 cents on the top rivalries in football.
