New look Rams backfield off to fast start

Rams G.M. Billy Devaney told PFT earlier this offseason that he needed to upgrade the team’s backup running back position.

They signed Jerious Norwood and Cadillac Williams in free agency, which left some Rams fans underwhelmed. After one preseason game, the new backs gave the team some hope.

Williams had 40 yards on 11 carries Saturday night, including a touchdown. Norwood is healthy for once and picked up 37 yards on eight carries. Keith Toston, who may have an uphill battle for a roster spot, led the team with 64 yards on 11 carries.

The encouraging night came against a Colts team that usually limps through the preseason, so it’s a little early to get excited.  But the Rams backfield does at least look better, and the receiving crew is deeper with rookie tight end Lance Kendricks emerging as a legitimate weapon.

  1. Why would Rams fans be underwhelmed with two big names as backups? When healthy Norwood is a game breaker. I have a feeling we (Falcons) would let him go and he would stay healthy and become a star elsewhere. The minute he breaks a long run, you will see what I’m talking about. As for Cadillac Williams–he will get you those tough yards and is an excellent receiver out of the backfield. His blitz pickup is phenomenal as well. Kudos to former Falcon assistant GM Billy Devaney!

  2. Rams fan here, and I’m not underwhelmed with Caddy and Jerious. Our RB depth consisted of Ken Darby and rookie Toston last year. SJax is great, but whenever they tried to spell him last year, they couldn’t do anything with no threat in the backfield. I’m supremely happy they finally got some legitimate help for SJ.

  3. The Rams are steadily improving. As a die hard Eagles fan, game 1 is gonna be a challenge. I can see Josh Mcdaniels throwing alot of quick passes to negate our pass rush as well as run Steven Jackson. But…if our corners can lock down those receivers and Bradford has to hold on to the ball…Watch out!

  4. Finally some competitive spirit throughout the team. Long field goals, turnovers, depth at different positions. Teams have a new mix of personalities each year and this one is the best I think I’ve seen in a while for the STL Rams. Excited about the potential….
