Calvin Johnson: “I don’t really care” what Cris Carter says

AP

Cris Carter said last week that Calvin Johnson isn’t one of the NFL’s elite receivers, then backtracked when called on it.

Carter’s comments had some Lions fans riled up, but Johnson himself isn’t worried about it.

I don’t really care,” Johnson said. “I don’t really listen. I didn’t even know what happened until one of the guys told me the other day. I have my remarks, but I’m going to keep that to myself.”

Johnson declined to get into his own rankings of the top receivers in the league, but he did take issue with one thing Carter said: Carter claims that Johnson gets shut down by single coverage, and Johnson says that’s news to him.

“I wish,” Johnson said. “I wish I could get single coverage every game. That’d be fantastic.”

  1. For those of you who don’t understand, this is a textbook definition of “ESPN creates news” or “ESPN is always the story.”

  2. bdawk20 Nate Buerlson, I had him on my fantasy team last year. . . Would have had a much better year if not for injuries to himself and his glass QB.

  3. Cris Carter’s Top 5 Receivers of All-Time

Cris Carter, Cris Carter, Cris Carter, Cris Carter & Cris Carter.

Get over it, guy. Stop being salty because you never got a ring and you’re not in the Hall.

  4. Compare Megatron’s numbers to any of the WR Carter names- over the first 4 years of his career, he is right there with all of them. For example, Megatron has 33 TDs in first 4 years; Andre Johnson had 17. Not saying Megatron is better than Andre. i’m just sayin.

  5. No knock on Calvin, there maay even be some legitimate reasons (not excuses) for it, but the bottle line is that he has yet to live up to the hype of ‘Megatron’ as one of the game’s consistently elite receivers. He’s actually only had one outstanding season.

  6. I understand why Cris Carter was paid to play football, but I will never understand why anyone on earth would pay him to speak about anything.

  7. calvin johnson is one of the top 5 receivers in the league. so was Chris carter at his peak.

  8. Cris Carter is a moron who just tries to say outlandish things for the exact reason of keeping his name in the news. Calvin is a beast.

  9. The single coverage comment was the dumbest one. Why would any team defending the Lions NOT double CJ? Up until possibly this year he has been the only real deep receiving threat on the team.

  10. I’m wondering what Carter means by “getting shut down” by single coverage. Calvin produced over 1100yds & 12TDs mostly in double coverage. Imagine the stats in single coverage.
Opposing D.C.’s never seem to think single coverage is adequate, but like Burleson said, “I hope other teams start listening to Cris Carter.”

  11. Carter was great….but when it’s all said and done and barring major injury….he’ll be looking UP at Calvin Johnson in the record books.

    Karmas a bitch.

  12. nor should you care what Carter says, Johnson. You are much more physically gifted than Carter ever was, and besides, Carter is extremely annoying. You don’t get the nickname Megatron unless you are a serious stud @ WR. Enough said.

being a packer fan, there isn’t another receiver in the league who scares me more than CJ. calvin johnson is a freak.

WHAT? Bernard Barrian doesn’t scare you? 😉

No lets get it right….it is Cris Carter, Cris Carter, Cris Carter, Cris Carter & Randy Moss

  15. Just another reason to not watch anything on ESPN. Other than MNF on mute of course.

  16. When you think of all the absolutely horrible former players that BSPN has pumped out as analysts which one takes the cake?

    Salsbury
    Hodge
    Keyhawn
    Sean King
    Derrick Brooks
    Lomas brown
    Cris Carter
    Michael Irvin
    Kordell Stewart
Emmitt smith (man was he a disaster!)

I’m sure I’m missing a bunch but man there were a lot of dumb things said between these fools

  17. I’d actually put him at #5 in the best receiver category.

    1. Andre Johnson
    2. Roddie White
    3. Larry Fitzgerald
    4. Roddie White
    5. Calvin Johnson

For the record, I think it’s a travesty that both Cris Carter and Andre Reed are not yet in the Hall of Fame.

  18. That makes 2 of us. Carter is a joke. Is he still squaking about spygate? Chris Carter is the worst analyst out there. He’s not a handsome man either…….

Soooo who is the 4th person you rank ahead of Calvin Johnson? I only see three

  20. Chris Carter was an excellent receiver, but other than that he’s a moron. Frankly, I’m tired of the ex-players opinions because most of them suck so bad. Hey Chris, shut it pal.

  21. Btw Chris Carter you were good at PLAYING the game not EVALUATING and ANALYZING it. resign please. clear out your cubicle withtin the next 48hrs

    thanks
    ESPN

  22. I see a lot of Detroit Lions fans are in this one. They have nothing else better to do than to hope Stafford doesn’t get hurt and to defend players on their crappy football team. It’s alright Detroit……at least in October, when you’re out of the playoff race, you at least have hockey!

  23. redrew says:
Chris Carter worksout at my gym all the time. All I can say is….the guy loves to stand in front of a mirror
    ———————————————-

He’s probably thinking, “Haha there’s that ugly dude that’s always in here at the same time as me! Man I’m glad to be better looking than him!”

  24. Chris Carter, Steve Young, Phil Simms, Michael Irvin Etc… watching them is so gut wrenching because you can see right through what they’re saying on camera and hear what they’re really saying….. “HEY hey, look at me, look at me, i used to play football, dont forget about me, i played in the NFL!!” I never thought I’d say this but Keyshawn Johnson is probably the best former player thats now a tv commentator. OK guys we get it you are former players, good for you! Chris Carter wishes he had the talent that Calvin Johnson has, plain and simple. He just wants to take people down a notch and remind people that he was once great. Also, i watched NFL network after the H.O.F. inductions and Deion Sanders came on stage to speak with the commentators and he broke down and cried, which is understandable, and then here comes Michael Irvin and he starts to cry!!!! Are you kidding me? Its Deions moment (love him or hate him) and Michael Irvin somehow tried to make it about himself… the EGO’s on these guys are ridiculous.

  25. Calvin Johnson isn’t elite, but an idiot. He may not be polished, but CJ is easily a top 3 WR in this league.

  26. I agree. I could care less about what Chris thinks as he tends to think he’s an expert. If Calvin was smart, he’d mind his own business, keep his mouth shut and focus on his job.

  27. maybe he should be making comments on this supplemental draft this week. He is very familiar with it. Seems like Pryor if allowed will go in the 4th round just like he did, and both are from OSU. Makes more sense to make that comparison.

Why try to compare yourself to the guy the raiders should have taken #1 overall instead of J-Bust

  28. Why is it really important that Calvin Johnson be put in the top 5 of receivers? It’s called an opinion. Not everyone has to agree with an opinion.

  29. Cris tends to be opinionated, and it may comeback at backfire on him…mainly this is done for ratings as ESPN goes at NFL Network

  30. @gadzod Would to think how bad your team sucks son I mean, if they were any good you’d have been watching the last month of reg. season games which means you should know how the Lions’ season ended…but since ya don’t OBVIOUSLY your team was eliminated from playoff contention early huh

  31. Amen, Geauxjay. Haven’t watched espn for my nfl fix in years. Commentators trying to make news instead of reporting it is not watchable TV. And Berman, my god, who is entertained by those odd noises anymore?

  32. If I’m not mistaken, there was a team last season that tried single coverage on Calvin in the first half of their game…..he torched them for over 100 yards receiving in that first half. After the half, Calvin saw double and triple coverage the rest of the game, and he still had some catches.

Carter can’t get over the fact that there are players in the game today that make him look mediocre in comparison, and CJ is one of them.

  33. I’m a Lions fan, but any negative comments about Calvin , from other teams fans, comes from
    pure ignorance.

So…to the idio–er, “uninformed,” let’s put it this way:

When your team plays the Lions, your DC is scared to death of Calvin Johnson. That has nothing to do with the Lions sucking, not sucking, whatever, but it has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that CJ is a complete threat to burn you on any given offensive play.

  34. @jakek2: You say “First time I’ve heard CJ be called Megatron. Am I the only one who doesn’t get this nickname?”

Yes, you are the only one that hasn’t heard this nickname before and the only one that doesn’t understand it.

  35. Carter was off base because he never really watched the Lions, and when he did, they were down to somebody else’s fourth string QB.

When you compare Johnson’s numbers to Moss’ when he was on the Raiders, there is no comparison. Johnson has had a stellar start to his career under the circumstances. As the Lions get more competent he ought to really start putting up the numbers. You gotta love Carter saying that he played with a bunch of QB’s that weren’t great and he still put up good numbers. Except that Moss was next to him for a long time and guess who got doubled? Not Carter.

  36. Takes a real hater to take shots at Calvin Johnson.

What the hell has this guy ever done but play football and mind his own buisness?

  37. Cris Carter’s First 4 Years: 1,863 yards, 22 TDs

    Calvin Johnson’s First 4 Years: 4,191 yards, 33 TDs

Baffling words from a guy who claims he should be in the Hall of Fame.

  38. There they go again…. I,I,I…. It’s a TEAM sport. That might be the reason why Carter and Johnson have no championship ring.. They don’t understand that very few fans could care less about the individual player but follow a TEAM or organization.

  39. Even if we assume that Carter true, then the real question is: What kind of idiot defensive coordinator is not double-teaming Calvin Johnson? They should be fired.

  40. thousandcasts

I have TONS of respect for Megatron, I’ve had a man crush on him since his days at gtech. I hope the Lions do well, you all have waited long enough and deserve a winner, but I have to be honest and say the Lions have been given so much undeserved hype. Hear me out. Yes they have upgraded A LOT in areas where needed and they have done everything necessary to flourish but it has to show on the field and in the win/loss colum when it counts. Like I said I hope they do well and I have respect for megatron out of this world but now its time for the Lions to show something instead of hearing about how much potential this team has to be one of the best (thanks ESPN). Good luck to the Lions, I root for you guys until we have to play each other or if we have to fight for playoff position. Cheers. Signed – A Saints Fan.

  41. Carter claims that Johnson gets shut down by single coverageCarter claims that Johnson gets shut down by single coverage

Was that Single coverage done by Revis? If so, Calvin Johnson can still be an elite wide receiver.

  42. Coming from a guy who was known for being Randy Moss’ sidekick and catching the ball falling out of bounds I would not worry about his remarks either.

I really hope he does not get into the HOF.

  43. Carter is just jealous that Megatron has the best nickname in all of professional sports ever;while he is known as “that receiver who also played with Randy Moss on the vikings”.

  44. OK just to put this all in perspective, everyone saying Cris carter is an idiot is right. Simply put Carter’s first four years in the NFL were less thna stellar with some pretty good QB’s, and he did not have a “break out” year till his 5th year (1991 Minnesota Vikings 72 catches for 962 yds averaging 13.4 per with 5 TDs)
Now Mr. Johnson on the other hand almost, matches that his rookie year (2007 Detriot Lions 48 catches, 758 yds, 14.8 avg, and 4 TDs). the following year, his “break out” year, he stops a mud hole on thos stats with (2008 Detroit Lions 78 catches 1331 yds 17.1 avg and 12 TDs). Cris carter does not get even close to those stats until his 9th season with (1995 Minnesota Vikings 122 catches, 1371 yds, 11.2 avg, and 17 TD’s)

In the end Cris you were nowhere near as good as Calvin is at the begining of a career, and he has been playing on what many considered the worst team in football until last year. Calvin holds his own with all the other “elite” WR listed in this blog and if you interchange him on to any of the other teams, he may truly be considered the greatest of all time.

But as a measuring stick suck on these numbers Cris (69 catches 1313yds, 19.0 avg, and 17 TDs)
    Randy Moss

FYI – I am not a Lions fan, but I hate people who state their opinion with out basing it on facts. Both stats and perception back Calvin he has done far more with far less than all the “elite recievers” But that is for another blog.

    Colston doesnt get any love??

  46. I love these jackasses like Cris Carter–they run their mouths and then rescind what they said.

That’s all Carter has ever done–run his mouth for sensationalism’s sake.

    He’s a coward.

  47. As a Viking fan, I’ll always love Cris Carter for his amazing ability and his years of service for our team.

However, the guy was still a huge punk and a major whiner. I remember in the 1995 season, he sat in the lockerroom and pouted after the final game because he wasn’t able to lead the NFL in receptions and subsequently lost his record he had set a year ago.

Cris is great, just don’t let him open his mouth.

  48. “There they go again…. I,I,I…. It’s a TEAM sport. That might be the reason why Carter and Johnson have no championship ring.. They don’t understand that very few fans could care less about the individual player but follow a TEAM or organization.”

Apparently you don’t know much about Calvin Johnson since he’s made it pretty clear over the last few seasons that he’s more concerned with winning than he is his touches. He knows he’s gonna get those. He’s about the Lions putting up W’s, not whether or not he’s racking up meaningless stats during garbage time in a bad loss.

  49. I read the article, and not one time did I hear Cris say he was a better reciever than CJ. Are you sure most of you read the same article? Sounds like alot of you need to pull the panties out of your crack!

  50. Good to see that not everyone gets sucked into the senseless media vacuum. Johnson is smarter than that!

It’s good to see people can start trashing outright rather then be sympathetic it means that everyone is expecting Jim and my boys are going to do it right this year.

  52. Oakleyfreak you make a good point with reference to the the article and the fact the Cris never compared himself to CJ. It is implied because Cris was at his time considered an elite WR, making him “and expert analyst”, which leads to the redirected outrage towards Cris.

So lets get it straight; by the numbers for the first four years of the other 4 “elite” WRs.
    REC YDS AVG TD
    Calvin Johnson 270 4191 15.525 33
    Andre Johnson 311 3953 12.825 17
    Greg Jennings 246 3957 16 28
    Larry Fitzgerald 330 4544 13.725 34
    Roddy White 230 3536 15.625 16

Unlike Cris Carter number don’t talk out of there ass. Calvin Johnson is easily an “elite” WR and given the team he is playing for and their ability his first 3 years, he is a monster. And once the Lions get a running game he is going to set countless records. let’s look at the QB’s the others had Roddy White I believe was Vick and Schaub, Jennings had Farve and Rodgers, Fitgerald had Warner, Johnson had Carr and Shaub. Based on that compare AJ to CJ and I think it is clear how good CJ is. Like I said before more with less.

  53. Okay, I’m a Viking fan and have always been a huge Cris Carter fan but this is about the most ridiculous thing Carter has ever said. I’m not sure what happened to him when he left the field of play but some of the things that come out of his mouth is just crazy.

CJ is a beast. Look what he did without a decent QB. As a fan of the game of football I truly am looking forward to seeing what he can do if Stafford stays healthy. This guy is a phenom. As a Viking fan I hope I’m wrong :).
