For the second time this month, the Miami Dolphins have worked out an aging veteran running back who was once among the best in the league.

A league source tells PFT that Clinton Portis worked out for the Dolphins today.

The Dolphins previously worked out Tiki Barber and chose not to sign him. If the Dolphins want to add a veteran running back, the 29-year-old Portis would seem to be a better choice than the 36-year-old Barber, as Portis has actually been playing football over the last four seasons.

Miami reportedly cut running back Kory Sheets today, which could pave the way for bringing in Portis.

The problem for Portis is that he’s missed more games than he’s played the last two years. If he’s healthy, he could be a good option for a team in need of a running back.

UPDATE: The Dolphins have announced the signing of a veteran running back who was once among the best in the league, but it’s not Portis. It’s Portis’s teammate on the Redskins last year, Larry Johnson.
