What we learned during the final preseason week

Reuters

It’s the fourth preseason week.  We don’t learn too much from this week, but here are a few nuggets to note from Thursday night.

1. Colts quarterback Kerry Collins looked like you’d expect him to look.

2. The Chiefs can’t be pleased that Matt Cassel got injured, even if it’s minor.

3. The Ravens need to search for a new backup quarterback.

4. John Beck played . . . with the backups.  The intrigue builds in Washington!

5. Brady Quinn had a very rough first half against the Cardinals: He completed 4-of-12 passes for 26 yards and a bad interception.  Quinn’s receivers dropped two passes, but the Cardinals also dropped a potential pick six.

6. We love Colin Kaepernick as a prospect, but he’s had a poor preseason.  Two of his first four passes Thursday night were picked off.  He has five interceptions with no touchdowns in his limited preseason work.

7. Albert Haynesworth should be ready to roll in Week One after getting his feet wet Thursday.

8. Perhaps Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka will win the backup job by default.

  1. The Packers appear to have found a bookend for Clay Mathews at outside linebacker.

    Check out Vic So’oto.

Undrafted free agent signing from Brigham Young.

  2. It needs to be noted again – the first unit offensive line was in there with Beck, which I think is more telling than anything, particularly because of the history of some of the guys (like Jamaal Brown). I have no idea what Shanahan’s plan is, but to not note that the first unit OL was in there with Beck seems to be leaving out a big piece of the puzzle when analyzing the situation.

  3. Preseason still sucks and even made more worse in the 4th preseason game. Sorry for those that wasted valuable time watching it. Also what were the Chiefs thinking playing Cassel? And lastly if you are surprised by B.Quinn aka medicine woman’s performance go back to his Browns days as a reference point.

  4. Nothing about Lance Kendricks Eh i guess there no love for Tight Ends!! he had the most impressive preseason out out of any Rookie drafted this season!!

  5. Repeat after me: PRESEASON MEANS NOTHING.

Last year the preseason leader in rushing was Anthony Dixon with 300 yards; he also led in TDs with 4. He had 237 yards rushing all year…with just 2 TDs.

Cedric Pearman had a 93 yard TD run in preseason last year…he gained 1 yard in the 2010 season.

    One. Yard.

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE STATS, GOOD OR BAD…THEY MEAN NOTHING!!!

  6. 9. Rams just got the 4-0 curse, they have taken themselves out of the division race. And LOL @ Crapernick, I could have told you on draft day that he sucked, I’ve watched plenty of Nevada games.

  7. kafka may be the eagles back-up….so basically kafka, and not young, will start 7 games this year as the eagles qb when v(d)ick is injured? dream team? lololololololol.

  8. Continuing…

    9. – The Packers continue on their way to TWO SUPERBOWL victories in a row. They are truly the most solid team in the NFL again.

  9. That’s what you get when you don’t pull your starting QB, Chiefs. You get squashed by Howard Green.

  10. I hope you admit that you didnt see any of Collins’ throws b/c he looked amazing considering the circumstances, hell amazing in general. Im assuming you just looked at stats and made your assessment? His receivers dropped passes, he threw a BEAUTIFUL deep ball that led to a PI (about 45 yds worth) and put them on the goal line, and his passes in general were beautiful.

  11. Bartel was by FAR the best QB on the field in the AZ-Den game. Accurate, got the ball out of his hand fast and stood in there and made throws. I don’t care what string was playing, those things are able to be evaluated positively or negatively regardless of competition.
Quinn cannot play QB. He has not gotten one iota better since he’s been a pro.

  12. PHI should be OK until someone breaks Vick’s Coccyx.

    Unless he catches a….

“Necrotizing fasciitis, caused by an invasive streptococcus! Flesh eating disorder, it’s all over the money. Better wash your hands.”

  13. we learned the 4th preseason game is a complete joke. How are the owners allowed to charge full price to season ticket holders and we get to see the starters for a maximum of two series. I’ve never understood the concept of not playing the starters in the final preseason game. Why doesn’t the NFL create a B-league and use their games for talent analysis (and charge 5 bucks for tickets)?

  14. Lol, Kerry Collins looks (in the pic of him and Manning on NBC Sports) like he either wants to tear Payton’s eyes out or plant a fat wet one on his cheek – either way it doesn’t look like he’s paying attention to a single word.

  15. Something else we learned…clearly the 49ers are tanking to get Andrew Luck.

I suspect they will be competing with Seattle and Washington for the honor…

  16. replies

KC – inevitable that Cassell is injured..he holds on to the ball too long

Den – Quinn played his way right back to third string. Tebow still has the looping delivery, but he was most effective, by far.

Phila – Kafka was nearly a grease spot after a blast. Young got a tough break.

    Dont watch it , then..genius.

Players need to be evaluated in game situations….any ideas as how to do that WITHOUT ACTUALLY PLAYING?

    thought not.

no go back to watching ego maniac Todd Haley implode that team.

    RAIDER NATION!!!!!!!

“What we learned during the final preseason week”

    1. Preseason football is almost as hard to watch as the WNBA
    ============================
    2. preseason posts are even harder to watch by scrubs who never played the game, and would get their arse handed to them if they tried.

hazard to guess fantasy football geek with suspect athleticism, period.

love these armchair GM-types. “Professional fans”.

first they complain about a lockout, then they run their stupid mouths about pre-season. No one is holding a shot gun to their head to watch.

OR COMMENT. The greatest lesson of pre-season with today’s idiot fans.

    LMAO!!!!!!!

Repeat after me; commenting on pre-season means even less.

  20. “I’ve never understood the concept of not playing the starters in the final preseason game. ”

Go watch highlights of Matt Cassell getting hurt in a meaningless game. And also try to understand what the pshychie of the Chiefs starters must be when they played almost the whole game against the packers backups and couldn’t win. Their coach should have been fired before the game ended imo.

  21. 1. Vic So’oto is a beast
    2. That Arizona Backup QB looked good
    3. Jake Locker is probably the best qb from the Draft
    4. Christian Ponder looked like a big muscled version of Fran Tarkenton, dude needs to learn to slide thou
    5. NFL network aired a bengals/colts preseason game…. c’mon man.

  22. How are the owners allowed to charge full price to season ticket holders and we get to see the starters for a maximum of two serie

Because everybody knows what is going on in these practice games.

    It’s not like it’s a trick.

Dont worry T.Haley knows he sucks, so he made sure he fired the only guy that made Cassel look good – Charlie Weis, then Cassel immediately looked uncomfortable, Haley will yell at him, even though he has a top 5 RB in J.Charles and a top 5 WR in Dwayne Bowe….he is an expert at disrupting any chemistry whatsoever, because he s a “perfectionist” on a team just gaining its confidence.

Haley’s ego is going to get in the way, and implosion is inevitable.

You think Niners are regretting passing on Jake Locker for Alden Smith now?

  25. ok, first off, it looks like Grossman is the starter in Washington. Second, Young is hurt so Kafka could backup, but when Young played he looked good. Third, Cassel being hurt isnt a good thing if he misses real game time and lastly, Quinn struggled, but i bet Fox still names Quinn the backup.

  26. 2 reasons why I am no longer a season ticket holder:

    1) 2 preseason games @ $100 per ticket – think about that who is crazy enough to pay a hundred bucks plus 20 for parking to witness this??

    2) PSL’s – the rich man’s way of having 76,000 fans pay for a new stadium (or 150,000 in NY).

  27. Wondering more every day if Haley dumping Weis is going to be the equivalent of Josh McDaniels dumping Mike Nolan as his defensive coordinator: Talented coordinators come in, immediately start to turn things around, but insecure coach gets spooked and decides he knows much better, with the immediate result being a rapid decline.

  28. @tatumo64

After you posted 2 back to back posts complaining about people commenting on preseason, you then go on to make 2 more posts. Maybe everyone should just give up on posting and let a master like you make every comment. You are obviously a genius.

  29. @tatumo64

Correction…you made a total of 6 posts on this article. You must have wayyy too much time on your hands. Must get lonely in your parents basement.

  30. @ tatum 06 i was going to post a response to your comment, but seeing that others have responded to you love for pre-season football i will pass.
