John Beck says he’s “pissed” not to be Redskins’ starter

Speaking for the first time since losing the Redskins’ starting quarterback competition to Rex Grossman, John Beck described himself today as “pissed,” but not dejected.

“I knew a decision was going to have to be made,” Beck told the Washington Post. “One of us was going to be the guy and the other one was going to be pissed. I was the guy that was pissed. But I’m not going to let that disturb me. I don’t want that to hold me back from anything.”

Beck says he did his best during training camp and the preseason and still believes he can be a starting NFL quarterback.

“The one thing I’m not going to do is let this hold me back from what I can do in the future,” Beck said. “I gave it everything I had. That, I’m not ever going to question. I prepared myself as best I could for every situation. I went out there and tried to do my very best.”

But Beck’s best wasn’t good enough to beat out Grossman, and so he’ll spend this Sunday where he’s spent every NFL Sunday for the last three years: On the bench.

  1. I think he’s better than Grossman. Maybe marginally, but better nonetheless. He will be the starter after Grossman goes 0-3 as the starter.

  2. Those Shanny guys really know what they’re doing with team building and maintaining a healthy locker room, don’t they? Second time today, unsurprised. Redskins = Chaos. Hail To The Madhouse. Good luck, Skins fans.

  3. Beck couldn’t even beat out Grossman and he’s whining about it. He is lucky he’s not on the bench behind a quality starter where he would never even have a chance with his skill set.

  4. Good attitude. If ever given the opportunity to start live up to the expectations and win the job!

    Vick did it as well as Romo and a handful of others.

  5. Does Vegas do odds on stuff like this? What would be the over/under on the number of weeks until Grossman is benched? I was thinking 5, but Shanahan is a stubborn Irish bastard…

    Carla was the Prom Queen.

    Quote of the Day!

  7. I can’t figure out what John Beck thinks he has done to deserve being a starter in the NFL? He has no real game experience, a showing when he is in games, an average preseason. Those don’t add up to being and NFL starter over someone that has gotten their team to the SuperBowl.

    ******

    Bravo for The Rock reference.

  9. The only way Beck is not starting by week 5 is if he breaks a leg/arm/neck in practice. Rex will piss his opportunity away and the fans will be chanting for Beck in no time.

  10. Grossman gives them a much better shot at winning not just one but multiple super bowl titles. AND when I say winning, I mean melting down and throwing enough picks to “win” the first pick in the draft also know as Luck.

  11. John Beck furious he’s John Beck.

    FWIW, Grossman looked better than he’s ever looked in his two starts against division opponents last year. So that might be something.

    How bad do you have to suck if youre Rex Grossman’s back-up?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ask Kyle Orton
  13. One thing many people fail to realize is that Mike Shanahan is a very good Xs and Os guy. At one point in his career I would even call him a genius. However, from a talent evaluation standpoint… God awful. And the ego that says I can make anyone a great QB doesn’t help (see Brian Griese post John Elway). That being said, Beck is no better than Grossman, but just the fact that those two are your choices?
    Yes, how out of touch with the rest of the league to choose a starting quarterback and a backup quarterback.
  15. It will be hilarious to hear Skins’ fans chanting for John Beck. WHO?
    I’m hoping McNabb has a fabulous season and proves the Shanahass’ wrong.
  16. Well Johnny Boy you have not proved yet you are the Best for the job yet..not for the skins not for anywhere, i think your decent average, you have good potential a lil mobility but you didnt transcend that on the field as say Gross man has and Grossman has more experience and has been to the big game…so right now basically..your just sh!t out of luck for the moment.
  17. Dont worry you’ll get your shot soon, and then the guy behind you we’ll get his when you play ,well like you!!!
  18. thats right Johnny B… youll be starting in no time.. i think he better than grossman anyways
  19. There’s no shame to not winning the starting job over Rex Grossman.
    I mean, you could have lost out on the starting spot to Chad Henne. Or Cleo Lemon.
  20. jtbndy says:
    I saw nothing from Beck during preseason that warrants him starting over Grossman.
    ________________________________
    I saw nothing in preseason that warrants either of these 2 guys to be on an NFL roster much less competing for a starting job. Unfortunately there are some fairly slim pickins for quarterbacks out there and the draft classes over the last few years and upcoming near future are not looking real good
  21. I think people put too much into the quarterback situation in dc … notice how shanny turned no names into good running backs… it’s because of the system…
    I think they are approaching the qb’s the same way … that’s why don didnt work last year .. cuz it was difficult to stick to their system .. they just need somebody who knows the offense well enough to execute it the way they call it .. few audibles and not make too many mistakes.. .. besides .. our team is gonna be built on running the ball .. hightower .. and defense .. not saying we are gonna be a playoff team .. but honestly the qb position is not gonna be the focal point of any success we might have this year ..
  22. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
    Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes…
    The dead rising from the grave!
    Beck is pissed!
    Tiki is flabbergasted!
    Dogs and cats living together, Mass Hysteria!
  23. If you lose a quarterback battle to Brees, or Brady, or Rodgers, you can say “I’m not going to let that disturb me.” If you lose a quarterback battle to Rex Grossman…
  24. working for the “mastermind” and his equally no talented son aint no cup of tea so be happy and wait til little Danny fires them at the end of the season and try again.
  25. Beck told the Washington Post – “One of us was going to be the guy and the other one was going to be pissed. I was the guy that was pissed.”
    ===========================================
    Correct reaction Beck! Everyone of us feels the same way… watch this!!!
    Thumb’s up if you’d be pissed to back up either Rexy or Becky…
  26. Kidman, Shanny set this up by naming Beck the starter, then saying the decision would go to game time, then naming Grossman the starter a week before the game. The result of stuff like this is players don’t know what’s what and bad team morale, just like what happened last year.
  27. @parenthesis78…. couldn’t have said it better myself. The skins are just asking rec to run the system.
  28. Beck’s record is horrible and you have to go back to 2007 to find it. It’s not like he’s just coming into the league and needs time to develop. I mean, 7 fumbles with 5 lost in 5 games horrible.
  29. Six Degrees of John Beck:
    Kyle Orton once lost a QB battle to Rex Grossman
    John Beck couldn’t beat out Rex Grossman
    John Beck couldn’t beat out Chad Henne
    Miami tried to replace Chad Henne with Kyle Orton
    Let’s see if we can identify the weakest link….
  30. “How bad do you have to suck if youre Rex Grossman’s back-up?”
    Ask Kyle Orton. He’s got some experience in that department.
  31. Great time to be a Redskin fan! Our NFC East foes are going through some tough times The Eagles have benched rookie guard Danny Watkins for a recently acquired Guard! The Cowboys just lost their rookie starting Right Tackle for 2 weeks as well as corner backs Jenkins and Newman for week one! The Giants, to go along with their numerous injuries, just loss their starting MLB Goff for the season as well! What a great couple of days..although I dont wish any malicious acts of violence on other teams I will say that our NFC east foes have kicked us while we were down before so now its our turn to take advantage…and possibly mock some cowgirl fans on the way to a play off berth!
  32. Other than the last preseason game behind the second string O-line, there is only a whisker of a difference btwn Beck and Grossman. Both are very good at operating the KYLE Shanahan offense. The reason it doesn’t matter so much who the QB is (maybe neither is the best starting QB in the NFL, but the other is the best #2 QB) is because the offensive line is way better and the running game no longer requires the dragging anchor of Clinton Portis’ contract. Hightower, Helu, Torain … plug and play. TONS of conversions on first down. Very very little punting required. Trent Williams is a year better after a rookie year of unreasonable expectations. Jammal Brown is finally healthy. Chris Chester finally found an offense that matches his skills. Will Montgomery (center) is the strongest guy on the team … and Lichtensteiger is back. Sleep on the Skins at your peril. Only two significant injuries in all the starters (Landry and 2nd round pick Jarvis Jenkins). Compare the number injured starters in the rest of the NFC East.
    Calm down, you’ll be starting by week three.
    ———————————
    I was thinking more like the 3’rd quarter of week 1.
  34. Grossman is not as bad as everyone thinks he is! After week 3 all of these nay sayers and haters will be nowhere to be found! Write this down! You heard it from DirtyDrynn27 and I will be reminding all of you about this in the coming weeks…
  35. Smart move by the Shanahans. It will take three weeks to confirm that Rex is still Rex and will never change. Then Beck can start. He will struggle at times but skin fans won’t be tempted to call for Rex because that card has already been played. If Beck plays week one and hits the wall then there willbea season long back and forth a QB that achieves nothing. At seasons end the skins will either have their man or realize they have to draft a QB
  36. dcsween, at least Grossman doesn’t fumble much. That alone should make him #1 in the KYLE hand-it-off system.
  37. Beck you were outplayed by Grossman by a large margin; Grossman was pretty much perfect on the preseason probably had a better preseason then any other quarterback in the league. So shut your mouth Beck people like you want things given to you when you cry you are not five years old and Grossman unlike you earned the starting job and therefore gives the Redskins a chance to win. If you were the better performer then you would have a case but you do not go to Denver where the best quarterback gets made third string and since Beck you would be the worst on that roster at least you would be second string since they do not like to start the best quarterback in Denver speciafically horse face Elway.
  38. Looks like Shanny cant help himself, He needs another Stanford QB to win the big one. Hence the promotion of Grossman
    Lost in that hype is the fact that Grossman or Beck will be the Redskins 20th starter in 8 years, you know its bad when you’re deflecting off the Raiders to make yourself relevant.
  40. @dcsween – any credibility u had was shot when u said Chris Chester finally found an offense to match his skills. What a fracking joke. Typical foreskin fan. I’ll bet u really believe that Rex grossman and John beck are in the top 50 percent of starting qbs in the NFL. Take a qualuude, relax, and prepare your psyche for the Andrew luck sweepstakes. That will be the one thing the foreskins have a shot of winning.
    Don’t feel bad though. If you just shift your changer to the bmore stations, you can watch a real team, with a non retread as a head coach , with an owner that understands not to interfere, and quality players that want to be here because of a real winning tradition rather than decades old history of winning. bring your purple out for the playoffs loser, burgundy and gold has been out of season for decades and that ain’t changing anytime soon. Oh yea, tell Chris Chester we said hello from baltimore. 50 miles is as close as he is getting to the playoffs for the next few years
  41. Playing for the skins and backing up Rex is worse than the guy who picks up the horse’s poop during a parade…
  42. Keeping an eye on the larger picture, we’ve had Shanahan hand select McNabb, sour on him instantly, get rid of him, talk up Beck as a potential star, then be left with Grossman as the starter. And he’s painted himself into a corner where if the offense struggles, he might be forced to fire his son. He got Brian Griese to a Pro Bowl, so he’s had success with system QBs before, but I’m starting to wonder if the ol’ Shanny magic may be gone…
    Why are you so angry and bitter? are you threatned that much by the Redskins you may have a stroke????
    I think Grossman has already led a team to the second highest scoring offense for a season and went 16 game playoffs and a SB loss….So your “facts” that Grossman can’t play…are so off base most stop reading your post there.
  44. If anyone on that team has any brains (i.e. Shannarat and Snyder) they do no better than 4-12 this year.
    Tank it baby!
  45. TO BAD JOHN,YOU OUGHT TO BE HAPPY YOUR IN THE NFL AND NOT THE CFL ,WHEN YOU GET YOUR OPPURTUNITY GO OUT AND PLAY YOUR BUTT OFF INSTEAD OF YOUR MOUTH
  46. I honestly don’t get it HONESTLY. The skins CAN beat many teams on their schedule. Sehawks, niners, panthers, bills, dolphins, cardinals and they cld easily split with a depleted giants team and they can split with the cowboys too. Ppl need to stop with they can only win 3 to 4 games. Make me a case of y they can’t beat any of those teams?
  47. Being named “the starter” in the off-season was about the only way John Beck was going to BE a starter in the NFL. He’ll always have July…
  48. Bout time someone on the TEAM is finally “pissed” besides just the fans and Painsworth….Let’s go Skins- GET PISSED and WIN SOME GAMES!!!! HAIL!
  49. @leevi98 – the fact that Rex Grossman made it to the SB doesn’t make him a good QB. Take my word for it. I watched Trent Dilfer win a SB because of a historically great defense.
    And no, I am not bitter at all. Just can’t stand the Redskins for a good 4 decades. Start with George Preston Marshall the original owner who was a white cloak wearing racist who refused to put black men on his team until he realized that he needed to in order to win, move to Jack Kent Cooke who tried to rename a city RalJon after his two miscreant boys, and finish with the Danny who will not allow his employees to look him in the eye (I know this for fact as a handful of his employees are patients of mine) and is arguably the worst owner in professional sports (perhaps only being surpassed by another mighty midget Peter Angelos.) Other than that you can add in a fanbase that wear pig noses and dresses and still believe that the Redskins really matter.
    Hail!!!
  50. Nah it sucks to be a crapboys fan. All they see is teams running the score up on a D2 secondary headlined by someone named Gerald. Go grab santana from da skins cause he’s gonna beast all over dat weak ass joke secondary. Ask that fake FS/SS Roy Williams what happens when you wear a big fruit star on your head? ‘sack on your faces crapboys!
  51. I guess I would be pissed off too if I couldn’t beat out Rex Grossman for a starting QB spot. So I guess it’s safe to say that John Beck must really suck! Skins fans should boycott this slop that Shanahan and company have assembled.
  52. He’s lucky he’s not trying to find a job with his standard D-1″college degree” in Basket weaving.
    He should thank God he’s not risking bodily harm behind a bad O-line and start planning a life for after football.
    ——————————————–
    I guess that’s true if you don’t count any of the other quarterbacks in the league. Or don’t watch any other games.
    QBs who performed better then Grossman in the Preseason statistically: Matthew Stafford (rating 154.7), Ben Roethlisberger (146.6), Aaron Rodgers (130.1), Derek Anderson (129.4), Luke McCown (125.1), Richard Bartel (115.5), Philip Rivers (114.8), Shaun Hill (113.6), Tim Tebow (108.3), Rudy Carpenter (104.1), Kyle Orton (104.1), Mark Sanchez (102.9), Colt McCoy (101.7), Brian Leftwich (100.3), Sam Bradford (97.1), Matt Moore (96.6), Jason Campbell (93.6), Chad Henne (93.3), Kevin Kolb (93.3), and Drew Stanton (92.4).
    Besides them, Rex Grossman had the the best preseason of any other quarterback in the league.
