Week One power rankings

AP

1. Packers (No. 1; 1-0):  Randall Cobb said that God told him to defy coach Mike McCarthy’s order to not bring out a kickoff more than five yards deep.  Cobb needs to realize that, in Green Bay, McCarthy’s rank is higher.

2. Saints (No. 2; 0-1):  There’s a good chance that the best two teams in the NFL played in the first game of the season.

3.  Chargers (No. 3; 1-0):  An ugly win in September is one of the prettiest things this slow-starting team has seen in years.

4.  Ravens (No. 8; 1-0):  Baltimore probably would have liked to bank a few of those 35 points for the rematch with the Steelers.

5.  Patriots (No. 7; 1-0):  Tom Brady reminds the world that, while Aaron Rodgers was the MVP of the Super Bowl, Brady was the MVP of the league.

6.  Jets (No. 6; 1-0):  Despite swiping a win, the Jets have a lot of things to fix.

7.  Bears (No. 11; 1-0):  Maybe some of the Bears defenders should play both ways.

8.  Eagles (No. 9; 1-0):  Mike Vick says he played “lights out.”  His completion percentage suggests he meant that literally.

9. Falcons (No. 4; 0-1):  After losing to the Bears on the road, it’s too early to panic.  If they lose to Vick and the Eagles at home, it won’t be.

10.  Texans (No. 12; 1-0):  The 2011 season started the same way that the 2010 season began.  The Texans need the next 15 games to go slightly better.

11.  Steelers (No. 5; 0-1):  Safety Troy Polamalu says the the team was humbled.  Age tends to do that.

12.  Lions (No. 14; 1-0):  After winning four of 44, the Lions have won five of five.

13.  Bills (No. 24; 1-0):  The Jets and Pats may have good reason to get a little nervous.

14.  Cowboys (No. 10; 0-1):  Cowboys fans likely are hoping that Tony Romo will start his pro golf career sooner rather than later.

15. Buccaneers (No. 13; 0-1):  If they couldn’t beat the Lions when the Lions didn’t have Matthew Stafford, why did anyone think the Bucs could beat the Lions with Stafford?

16.  Jaguars (No. 19; 1-0):  The Luke McCown era begins with the crackle of a damp lady finger.

17.  Cardinals (No. 17; 1-0):  They may never break into the top 10, but they may win the NFC West by three laps.

18.  Raiders (No. 20; 1-0):  Maybe the Chargers won’t simply stroll to the AFC West championship.

19.  49ers (No. 25; 1-0):  Two undefeated teams in the Bay Area could be a sign that the end is near.

20.  Redskins (No. 31; 1-0):  Beat the Cardinals on Sunday, and then we’ll start to maybe, possibly believe that this team could maybe, possibly be better than expected.

21.  Rams (No. 21; 0-1):  When the Rams and Giants square off on Monday Night Football, they should replace the coin flip with a comparison of injury reports.

22.  Panthers (No. 28; 0-1):  No team has ever jumped so high with a loss.

23.  Giants (No. 15; 0-1):  Maybe Rob Ryan will be the next coach of the Giants.

24.  Vikings (No. 22; 0-1):  Was there a digit missing from Donovan McNabb’s passing yardage?

25.  Seahawks (No. 23; 0-1):  If the Seahawks think that Tarvaris Jackson was jerked around in Minnesota, wait until they see what happens to him in Pittsburgh.

26.  Bengals (No. 32; 1-0):  Well, they got their win.  Now they can coast.

27.  Titans (No. 27; 0-1):  The good news?  The Titans may finish higher in the standings than the Colts.

28.  Broncos (No. 30; 0-1):  Coach John Fox needs to realize that those Tebow chants will only get louder if they are ignored.

29.  Colts (No. 18; 0-1):  Andrew Luck would be the perfect quarterback for a team with a horseshoe on the side of its helmet.

30.  Dolphins (No. 29; 0-1):  Yeah, that preseason No. 29 ranking for the Dolphins was wrong.  It was too high.

31.  Browns (No. 26; 0-1):  Hell, Eric Mangini could have beaten Cincinnati.

32. Chiefs (No. 17; 0-1):  We’ve got a feeling that most Chiefs fans will agree with this.

  1. I am pumped about my Bills but think they should be flattered to be at 13 after playing a weak KC Chiefs who didn’t run the ball. I want to see them beat a legitimate team before they start getting props. The Raiders this week will be a good test. The Raiders are better coached and play rabid football. IF the Bills can contain the run they are legitimate.

  2. Power rankings may be silly but the Steelers @ # 11 is ridiculous! That division is going to have 2 teams with 12 wins or more and the Browns and Bengals won’t be one of them.

  3. Are you kidding me?? The Ravens stomp out the Steelers in epic fashion, and all you have to say is that they should’ve saved some of it for next time cause they’ll need it??

It should’ve been a comment about how they forced as many turnovers as they allowed points, or about how well the new players are complimenting the vets and vise versa – the level that people have kind of looked away at his DOMINANT performance against the SB-runner-ups is insane.

  4. panthers will be a top 15 team this season. I predict a 6-7 win season. The bears I thought would flop this season, but their Defense looks like a top 5 group. Julius Peppers is a game changer

  5. I agree with the Browns comment ,Mangini was starting to get that team on the right track , and nothing like changing the HC with a impending lockout and no time to install new systems,no excuse for losing to the qb less bengals

  6. Ok problem 1 how is that GB & NO stay atop the rankings sure there was plenty of offensive fire power and lots of points but where was the defense? GB @ 1 ok isn’t a stretch but to leave NO @ 2 come now…

  7. i am sure that i could pick this apart a lot, but for some reason the only thing that stuck out at me was the Dolphins below the Colts, and how i dont agree… thats all i got..

ps. if the colts blow it this year and come away with Luck i will be so mad!!

    GO 49ERS!!

  8. How are the Patriots not #1 – someone explain that to me?

Way to shut up the critics Lions…now stay aggressive for all 4 quarters!

Bronco’s fans want to thank the Colts Dolphins Browns and Chiefs for being even more inept than the Broncos… What a horrendous travesty that game was.

  9. the saints and chargers should be ranked lower or higher depends on how you look at it…the saints def. isn’t any good and the chargers are once again overrated
    top 7 teams:
    GB
    Ravens
    Pats
    Jets
    Eagles
    Chargers
    Saints

  10. Not much arguments from this Giants fan. 23 is right around where they should be. Only thing is, the Rams should probably be a bit lower, and the Rams are NOT 1-0, since they lost to Philly.

  11. Even as a Packer fan, I look at the Patriots and say they are WAYYYYY too low. They should be number 2.

Chargers should drop a little after barely beating the Vikings.

  12. HAHAHAHAHA I can’t believe some guess paid to do this. The dolphins at 30 did you watch any of the game, I mean isn’t it your job to actually watch the games? They went aganist probably the number 1 or 2 team in league on the first game of the season. The offense looked good, and the defense will improve but 30 is laughable. After how the offense looked going aganist the best offense in the league any team would struggle with a shootout. Whoever is paying you is a clown

  13. Browns blew that game, but I still think they should be ranked over the Dolphins.

As for my Falcons… Even a loss to the Eagles at home wouldn’t make me panic. A blowout however should have all dirty bird fans worried however.

  14. Vick did not look flawless, but his numbers don’t tell the whole story as there many dropped TD’s or huge gains. The bottom line is as after the first 20 minutes, the Rams were outmatched.

  15. 29. Colts (No. 18; 0-1): Andrew Luck would be the perfect quarterback for a team with a horseshoe on the side of its helmet.
    ____

    lol good one

  16. 20. Redskins (No. 31; 1-0): Beat the Cardinals on Sunday, and then we’ll start to maybe, possibly believe that this team could maybe, possibly be better than expected

    ——————————————————-

Fair ranking, but the hyperbole of the comment reminds us all of the anti-Redskins bias that is prevalent here.

  17. Has any team fallen faster and further than Kansas City?

The only good news for Todd Haley is orca sized “columnist” and Barry Bonds apologist Jason Whitlock has moved to LA and isn’t around to write column after column questioning the Chief’s motivations.

  18. How can you put the Steelers at 11th!?! Are you kidding me? Yeah, we lost but it was a trap game. We will win every game from here on out because we won’t be blindsided. We will win the SB and start our own league after this. Thanks for the extra motivation. It wasn’t needed.

  19. Some one please remind me the last time the Falcons won a playoff game? All this Matty Ice crap and from what I can tell he melts come playoff time.

  20. I’m Packers fan, not a Chargers hater by any means, but I gotta say you have San Diego too high. There are several teams that should be above them.

  21. I won’t complain about the Eagles spot on your rankings but it’s so obvious that you have an agenda against Vick. His completion percentage was less than desireable but he was instrumental in helping his team win the game and there were some critical drops by Eagles wide receivers.

  22. 13. Bills (No. 24; 1-0): The Jets and Pats may have good reason to get a little nervous.

The “Amish Rifle” has found a new target in TE Scott Chandler.
Bills D didn’t break against the run like everyone said they would.
The lone TD of KC’s was almost a pick six-Aaron Williams was licking his chops!

    Go Bills!!!!

  23. Yes, the Bills looked great and the Chiefs looked awful. But if the Chiefs are really that bad, then the Bills win shouldn’t shoot them up the rankings that high. (Or, if the Bills are that good, then the Chiefs aren’t 32).

  24. Chargers will come crashing back to earth when they play in New England Sunday. I find it funny that people talk of San Diego reaching (and possibly winning) the Super Bowl every year, considering that NORV TURNER IS THEIR COACH. He is their Achilles heel and will continue to be so.

As for my Ravens, I like them ranked at #4, but I am kinda surprised they’re ranked ahead of the Patriots.

  25. pats and packers should be tied for 1st,with the ravens and saints tied for 2nd! eagles are’nt further up because they don’t really deserve it!

  26. 30. Dolphins (No. 29; 0-1): Yeah, that preseason No. 29 ranking for the Dolphins was wrong. It was too high.
    ———————————————————-

Ok so the Dolphins lose to the Patriots (some people pick to win the super bowl) and the 29th rank was to high? The Steelers gets man handled by the Ravens and they get 11th in the power ranking. Yeah that makes sense.

  27. Still hating on the Redskins. At least you moved them up 11 spots, but you still have the Bucs and the Cowboys ahead of them? The stats from the first games are similar (Cowboys and Skins), except the Skins had fewer turnovers and most importantly, they WON.

Does anyone remember that the Cowboys finished 2010 with the same record as the Skins (6-10)? When you look at the 2010 stats, you’ll see that the teams were very similar on paper. They had the same home record (2-6), but the Cowboys had one more win in the division than the Skins did. They were both 4-8 against NFC opponents. The Skins gave up 69 fewer points, although they scored 92 fewer points than the Cowboys. The Skins beat the eventual Super Bowl champs, the Packers (the Cowboys lost to the Packers 45-7). The two teams split the season, with the Redskins winning the first one and the Cowboys the second one.

Going into the season, everyone has been down on the Skins, predicting that they’ll finish at the bottom of the entire LEAGUE in 2011. These same people are predicting that the Cowboys will finish in the top. What did the Redskins do in the offseason that would make anyone think they’ll be WORSE than last year? From all appearances, they made several upgrades and dumped the trouble makers. They sure looked like a solid contender in the first game against the Giants. On the other hand, the Cowboys secondary is suspect, they have a slew of injuries, and they’re coming off a lousy season themselves.

I get that it’s only one game, but there seems to be a feeling…a sense…that this team is different this year. I believe they will surprise a lot of people in 2011.

    Hail.

  28. Redskins will beat the Cardinals next week. They are worthy of a mid teens ranking for now. Hopefully by the end of the season the ‘Skins will be good enough to be ranked in the top 10 or 12. HTTR!

  29. How in the world do you come away from week 1 and get the impression that the Colts, Broncos or Vikings are superior teams to Miami?

The Giants are too low as well. Washington always plays NFCE rivals tough at home, even when theyve had clearly inferior talent. So its not really surprising that a injury-riddled Giants defense with several new pieces starting on the offensive line would get upset by a very well coached and well balanced team like the Skins.

Not sure how you can justify Minnesota being better than NYG but we need some explanation here

  30. Did you watch the same games everyone else did? The Saints and Chargers over the Ravens? The Jets that high, Romo gives them a win and they are 6th? The Bears, Texans and few other should be above them. Even the Dolphins should be ramked much higher than that. Horrible rankings…

  31. So you’re telling us that the Saints loss was more impressive than the Patriots win????

And the Charger’s “ugly win” was more impressive than the offensive show New England put on against the 2010 6th ranked 2010 ?

And we’re supposed to take you SERIOUSLY?

  32. Wow what a wakeup call for the Browns. And the Bengals actually looked very effective. I tip my hat to coach Lewis. He got rid of all the prima donnas so the rest of the players could get in some WORK.

  33. Ok, I can maybe deal with the idea of Ravens and Pats being pretty close to each other, but come on .. saints and chargers ahead of them??? tht’s just ridiculous….

I don’t think the jets deserve the no. 6 spot.. they basically won thanks to romo’s choking act..

  34. polegojim says: How are the Patriots not #1 – someone explain that to me? omeone explain that to me?
    ——————————

Because a Packers victory over the Saints > Patriots over Dolphins

And because its okay to have Drew Brees put +400 yards passing on you…Chad Henne not so much.

  35. parenthesis78 says:Sep 13, 2011 10:35 AM

as usual .. the football media is still riding the cowboys balls.. .have them ahead of teams with winning records…

    ——————————–

Spot on dude…They should be in the 20’s…

I started getting nervous when they had a reasonable lead in the 4th quarter as I know that Romo can always find a way to lose…

    And yes, I am a Cowgirls fan…

  36. It’s not too early to panic about the Falcons….it’s just time to realize they were never as good as everyone thought. They were not as good as last years record indicated (just like the Bucs) and they cannot live up to the hype. There is no excuse for getting destroyed at home in the playoffs, and then getting destroyed on opening day. They just simply are not a top ten team. Top ten teams do not lose like that.

  37. Seriously stop dwelling on the bucs lost last year…….. They won call the NFL we scored but cause there refs suck we gave the packers our spot!!! I agree stafford shreded us… But I woulda expected the glazers to realize E.J Biggers isn’t nor will he ever be a good corner!!!!! Maybe when our owners stop bein cheap well win again

  38. If this is a power rankings based on the overall performance through the weeks played (which i know is one) then the falcons dont deserve to be in the top ten after being shalacked.

  39. Are these power rankings reflective of where the teams rank, or where someone wants them to rank? A compelling case can be made for the Packers at No. 1, but the Chargers over the Ravens and Patriots? Are we really to believe that it’s because San Diego has, unlike prior years, actually gotten off to a good start by winning their first game of the season? That’s about as persuasive as last week’s ranking of the Steelers over the Patriots, who “own” Pittsburgh in head-to-head matchups.

Another perfect example of why people hate Steelers fans.

  41. Chargers and Jets are too high.

And regardless of what you think of the Saints, you have to move them down – they lost.

  42. *Sigh*

I REALLY don’t want to have to fix these rankings all season, but I am going to.

    1. Packers (1-0)
    2. Ravens (1-0)
    3. Patriots (1-0)
    4. Bears (1-0)
    5. Chargers (1-0)
    6. Saints (0-1)
    7. Eagles (1-0)
    8. Jets (1-0)
    9. Texans (1-0)
    10. Lions (1-0)
    11. Falcons (0-1)
    12. Bills (1-0)
    13. Steelers (0-1)
    14. Cowboys (0-1)
    15. Raiders (1-0)
    16. Redskins (1-0)
    17. Jaguars (1-0)
    18. Cardinals (1-0)
    19. Buccaneers (0-1)
    20. 49ers (1-0)
    21. Bengals (1-0)
    22. Rams (0-1)
    23. Panthers (0-1)
    24. Giants (0-1)
    25. Titans (0-1)
    26. Vikings (0-1)
    27. Dolphins (0-1)
    28. Browns (0-1)
    29. Seahawks (0-1)
    30. Broncos (0-1)
    31. Colts (0-1)
    32. Chiefs (0-1)

  43. Power rankings are all in good fun, but I, like everyone else, have a few quibbles. The Jets require an epic collapse at home to win, while the Bears demolish a supposed Super Bowl contender at home, but the Jets are ranked higher?

The Chargers barely win after the other teams QB throws for 39 yards, and they’re number 3?

The Saints D gives up 3574 yards and they’re the second best team?

If you’re really doing a ‘power’ ranking, there’s no way you’re top 5 isn’t (in no particular order) Packers, Patriots, Ravens, Bears, Eagles.

  44. deddmunnie says:Sep 13, 2011 10:49 AM

How in the world do the Cowboys make the top half of this list? Laughable.

    —————————————-

Because someone torched a fatty before doing the rankings…

  45. The Titans were terrible but they’ll still be a competitor for the AFC South. Jacksonville shouldn’t be at 16 if you really think Tennessee is that bad.

Falcons are too high right now at 9. They were a vanilla team last year and teams similar to them, like the Chiefs, have a hard time translating low turnovers and a great ground game from season to season. If the Bucs play alright this year, losing to the Bears could have strings attached to a potential wild card spot.

    Fair list nonetheless.

  46. Does anyone think the Bills are really as good as the Lions? That one win vs. a lousy chiefs team doesn’t mean theyre a top 1/3.

  47. The Colts should be under investigation, they know Manning is not going to play forever and Andrew Luck could take them another 15 years over the top. Coincidence? I hope it is but to me they were the worst team easily even worst than the chiefs.

    ———————————————————

Hey now, logic has no place when it comes to reporting on the Redskins. It’s ridicule or nothing.

  49. Pats > Saints. And I hate both teams.

Saints D has been AWOL since the end of last year. I don’t put them as a top 5 team without seeing it show up.

  50. Saints at 2 are you crazy they have no defense.

Pats are probably fine where they are at Miami is a big slouch.

    Ravens need to be #2.

Falcons are too high they lost to a bad bears team and the same with the bears they beat a Falcons team with no defense.

Also chargers are too high they may have Rivers but they barely beat a very bad McNabb and Vikes team.

  51. Huge bills fan here. Its awesome to see them at 13! I think they will def surprise people this year. Offense looked great and D is MUCH improved from last year. Much bigger and much smarter on what to do. Even tho i may not like the dolphins or pats what so ever, i think they should be ranked higher. Brady made it look easy, but the dolphins have some talent there and will improve. Go Bills baby!

  52. Have no idea how a sane person puts the Chargers & Saints ahead of the Pats. No idea what so ever. Bias plain and simple. I’m not a Pats fan either.

  53. Just like the BCS these rankings are BS…start ranking teams on performance and not in name two examples SD what has and what will Norval Turner ever do that makes you think SD warrants a ranking so high??? And NO ok they were given one SB but really what have they done??? Any team with a good/decent defense can and will beat the Saints the Jets well you’ve just bought into the foot fetish and trash talking but the most sickening of all is the Cowboys you and all the media alike just put them at the top every year and for what???

  54. drshakedown74 says:

Eagles 8 huh…………….just wait. Andy is the best coach at fixing problems enough so they aren’t glaring anymore. 8?

One problem he has yet to fix and can’t seem to fix and that is put a Lombardi trophy in the trophy case….dream team 2 my arse LOL

  55. Patriots have 16 more weeks to get that defense playoff ready. And it better improve every week or they aren’t getting through that division.

Now Buffalo is dangerous. Great. Every team could finish at 8-8 or better with the winner at 11-5 or 12-4. I don’t see any easy games in the AFC East this year.

  56. While I am the guy who posted a few weeks ago that the Dolphins would win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, I can totally understand Fish Fans gripes about being ranked so low on this list. The Fish fell apart at the end to the Pats, but Henne looked a lot better than I thought he would. Ranking them lower than the Bengals & Browns doesn’t make sense to me.

  57. Patriots will win the most games in the regular season. Then they’ll meet a playoff team with a good pass rush and put Brady on his assets and the Patriots loose. Sound familiar? 🙂

Also, how many SB’s has “Bill the Genius” won since spygate? No, we are not going to let it go forget about it.

  58. I believe that Julius Peppers should play every position for the Bears.

NFC North possibly the strongest division in the NFL?

    Rex Grossman!

  59. so your number 1 and 2 teams dont have a defense between them and they are still 1 and 2?

    makes sense.

Rodgers and Brees im sure have women in their lives that can take back the duties you guys seem to love.

  60. Wow 26th for the Bengals. I’m pleasantly surprised as I figured you’d put us at 32nd again anyway just because (and also figured that you hadn’t watched our game).

    -QG

  61. Im a Bills fan and while it was GREAT to see them whoop on KC like they did, Im not quite there yet that the Jets and New England should be scared.

    Whoa whoa whoa!

KC is so one dimensional (run run run) it isnt funny.

I just want to see consistency.

Good luck Bills! Get us some AFC EAST Wins!!!!

  62. REDSKINS

“Beat the Cardinals on Sunday, and then we’ll start to maybe, possibly believe that this team could maybe, possibly be better than expected.”

Right. They’ll be slotted at 19.

  63. “Power rankings may be silly but the Steelers @ # 11 is ridiculous! That division is going to have 2 teams with 12 wins or more and the Browns and Bengals won’t be one of them.”

But will they be the OTHER?

    simmer down Stealer fan.

I keep clicking the thumbs up button on this post but it only let me do it once 🙂

  65. So just to recap, you rank miami 29 because of henne and the offense, henne goes and has his best game ever while they gash the pats and that supposed top 5 defense, but drop. If nothing else, at least you are both wrong AND inconsistent.

Or do you actually think this is how the defense (you loved) is going to stay?

  66. After the 2007 season Scott Pioli left New England and Bill Belichik to sign on as GM for the Chiefs. At the time many people said that the Patriots’ decline was imminent because Pioli was the genius who made Belichik look good – who to draft, etc.

    Remember that?

3 seasons removed from that, the Patriots have replaced 47 of the 53 players who were in the 2008 Super Bowl. In the 3 seasons since then their record including the 2 playoffs defeats is – 37 wins 13 defeats – 74%. I don’t know what K.C.’s record is but it ain’t too good and it sure don’t look as if it’s gonna get better soon.

  67. soo funny skins at 20? really this site is such a skins hater. week one power rankings ok lets go off week one and actuallt put the 16 winners in the top 16 not too hard to figure out

  68. As far as the Redskins go, I’m mystified by PFT’s reasoning that beating the Cardinals will be more of a test than beating their division rivals, the Giants.

  69. Bills had the biggest blowout for 35 KC years & beat a division winner / playoff team that carried over with almost all their players, that’s a statement game.

  70. Consensus from any football fan that has never lived in New Orleans: The Saints should not be ranked 2nd. Can they win a game first this season?

And I’m not a Patriots fan, but shouldn’t they be ahead of the Saints? And the Chargers?

And lastly, I’m a Falcons fan. I really appreciate all the love. But shouldn’t they be penalized for the atrocious showing against the Bears? You really think they should be ahead of teams that won in convincing fashion?

Here’s the bottom line: You know not what you do.

  71. 25. Seahawks (No. 23; 0-1): If the Seahawks think that Tarvaris Jackson was jerked around in Minnesota, wait until they see what happens to him in Pittsburgh.

    ——————————————————
    Ok, I’m a seahawk fan..

    but this was pretty funny

  72. Green Bay, New Orleans and New England gave up tons of yards as their defenses looked horrible. But…the season is young and I know at least Green Bay’s will come around. But Henne throwing for over 400 against the Patriots shocked me. Horrible defense by the Pats.

  73. 6 rings what position do you play? I would LOVE to see a Philly Pittsburgh SB…so you could make up another excuse ad to why “we” lost the big game…it was awesome sitting in a Philly bar filled with Steelers fans and hearing nothing but obscenities and excuses…and since the eagles won you know who I’m talking about…15-1 is a bold prediction clown.

  74. @KIR Yea, you’re right…being one miraculous catch away from going undefeated to win a Super Bowl…losing your QB to an ACL the next year…losing countless aging vets who helped win past Super Bowls (Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, Seymour, etc)…rebuilding your entire team on the fly…and still going 16-0, 11-5, 10-6 and 14-2 must mean that Bill the Genius can’t win without taping hand signals IN PLAIN VIEW to 70,000 people in a stadium. Got it.

Keep grasping for straws haters. Only a matter of time before Bill, Tom and the Patriots add another Lombardi to the trophy case.

How can you put the Steelers at 11th!?! Are you kidding me? Yeah, we lost but it was a trap game. We will win every game from here on out because we won’t be blindsided. We will win the SB and start our own league after this. Thanks for the extra motivation. It wasn’t needed.
    ———————————-
Another perfect example of why people hate Steelers fans.
    ————————————————————
LOL! I’m a Steeler fan, and even I hate Steeler fans! They give Steeler fans a bad name… If that makes sense…

  76. How are the Ravens and Pats behind the Chargers? Brady goes for 517 yards to win game 1, and the Pats are behind an 0-1 Saints team and the Chargers?

The Pats were 14-2 last year, and aside from Stephen Neal retiring, where have they gotten weaker? Dan Koppen is a huge loss, but does that put them at 5? I don’t get that.

Hey, you got Green Bay right at least.

  77. “Jaguars (No. 19; 1-0): The Luke McCown era begins with the crackle of a damp lady finger.”

    …what?

  78. ” Tom Brady reminds the world that, while Aaron Rodgers was the MVP of the Super Bowl, Brady was the MVP of the league.”

Super Bowl MVP > League MVP

    Even Brady would agree.

  79. @ KIR

Hey dude, you don’t need to let it go. It’s OK. You can keep up the copy and paste, no problem. As a matter of fact, why don’t you copy and paste the same message on every Pat’s post for the rest of the year? Thats a good challenge for you! I bet you can’t do it! Lol, this is going to be fun. I will be watching as well as other Pats fans and we will give a credit for every time you do it! Good Luck!

  80. Those yelling that Patriots are ranked too low… Chad Henne threw for over 400 yards against their defense. Chad Henne. Imagine what a good quarterback could do. Last year was a rebuilding year, Belicheck won’t take that excuse again.

    *Sigh*

I REALLY don’t want to have to fix these rankings all season, but I am going to.

    ———————————

I am glad this person fixed those, sounds a lot better to me.

  82. Said it last week. This Bengals team will surprise some teams that are sleeping on them. Their Defense is pretty good, and they can run the ball. 5 wins (maybe). I’d have put them closer to 30 this week. 26 might be a bit of a reach, but we’ll take it. First love we’ve gotten from this blog in a long time. Carson who?

this is the worst opinionated power ranking poll I’ve ever seen…

    —————————————————-

When an analyst posts a league ranking it is supposed to be opinionated. . . because it is an opinion piece.

  84. Putting up 34 points on the road against a defense that was #2 last year is pretty impressive–the Saints may very well be the second-best team in football. Lions and Bears should be a little higher.

  85. Buffalo is ranked too high (for now)….Bills fans know better than to get too excited over 1 game.

Hopefully we’ll have earned a top 5 spot after a few more weeks…..but as of right now, I am worried that a win against the Chiefs is not a big accomplishment.

  86. broncos lose to the raiders and look awful doing so yet they rise in the rankings two spots? dolphins lose to a top 5 team and look better than anticipated, but they fall a spot.

your working hard really trying to keep the dolphins close to that pre-season ranking huh? or as kobe would say, thats a “bikram yoga stretch”

  87. Alright the colts have been the most winningest team in the last decade. The steelers and falcons lost worst than the colts but yet you still have us at 29. Oft has always been colts haters. I want you to write an arrival about how wrong you were when the colts win the division. I wouldn’t jump on texans bandwagon yet. They have been known to choke a time or two.

  88. I want you to write an arrival about how wrong you were when the colts win the division.

This list is only about the 2011 season.

  89. So this means that if they were to play right now, the Miami Dolphins wouldn’t beat Cincinnatti, Indy, Seattle, or Denver??

    I completely disagree.

Seriously? What, you think they were looking ahead to the Seahawks game?

  93. How can you put the Steelers at 11th!?! Are you kidding me? Yeah, we lost but it was a trap game.
    ================================
A trap game? Against your most hated divisional rival?

  94. So the Jets barely beat the Cowgirls, the Saints lose and show that they (and the Packers for that matter) have no defense what so ever against the pass, the Chargers squeak out a win when McNabb threw for 39 yards and AP ran for less than 100, and you still have the three of them ranked ABOVE the Eagles, who aside from a tough first quarter completely dominated the media darling Rams. I don’t get it. On top of that, the Dolphins put up a great fight against the Patriots and lose it in a shootout while the game was manageable with only 3 to go, but you DROP them? These power rankings are a joke.

The top five should be 1. Ravens 2. Patriots 3. Packers 4. Eagles 5. Bears.

  95. why do the bears get the pleasure of playing there first three games against teams that ranked in the orig powerranking that were ranked 4th or higher? good thing is if they win all three might as well give em the superbowl trophy cause theyll be the winners..

  96. I would rant on and on about how terrible these rankings are but it would be pointless as I’m sure the writer doesnt even look at these comments.

His Week Zero and Week 1 rankings speak for themselves. I think this guy just looks at the final scores and makes his rankings from that. I mean the dolphins got completely manhandled, looked like a high school team, but there is no way in hell they are the 30th best team in the NFL. and the Bills at 13. the writer should be embarassed. so what happens if the dolphins beat the texans next week? are they 12th in the rankings now?

Usually its the opposite, but mr writer sir, i think its time you quit your day job

  97. I love to see the Bills ranked 13 but Im not convinced the Jets n Pats should be at all afraid. I mean KC looked really really bad, which I’m sure made us look better than we were.

  98. KIR says: Sep 13, 2011 11:59 AM
Also, how many SB’s has “Bill the Genius” won since spygate? No, we are not going to let it go forget about it.
    —————
Who the hell is “we”? I know I could care less about them taping things that an entire stadium of 70,000+ people can sit there and watch anyway. Theres plenty of legit reasons to hate NE, that reason, not so much.

  99. But I thought Bill Polian and Scott Pioli were geniuses? Oh, you mean that any GM can ride a hall of fame QB to ‘genius’ status?

Subtract Manning and Brady from the equations and they’re just two more clowns who don’t know much more than we do.

  100. Let me preface this by saying I don’t care about the Jaguars. But please explain to me WTH is a damp lady finger. Excuse my mind but it went straight to the gutter.

  101. Mike, there is no doubt you really discredit yourself with the placement of some of your teams. The two that sticks out like s sore thumb is the Dolphins and the Bills rankings. I think the Bills are a good team but beating the Chiefs who had struggled all preseason and has shown the same issues in the 1st game is not a reason to push them up so high. Then the Dolphins, their offense exceeded everyones expectations and if that defense figured out how to keep up with the Pats tempo on offense I think Miami would have won that game. No doubt that this ranking is very bias.

  102. Since no one is defending the reason San Diego Chargers are rank so high well then I guess I am going to have to enlighten you dummies. First of all the score was 24-17 San Diego. So the only thing Minnesota could muster up on offense was one break from AP. Other then that AP was shut down the whole game. There only other TD came from special teams Kick off TD and that will get fix. Actually it already got fix by San Diego signing Kicker Nick Novak who will boot the ball into the end zone now and not choke in tight situations. McNabb had 39 passing yards, what does that tell you about San Diego’s Defense. So really the score should of or could of been 24-3 or take away Rivers Int when they were driving and it could of been a blow out 31-3. It don’t matter because San Diego going to show you what they are all about next week against New England and have our revenge from the past AFC Championship game. So in conclusion San Diego rank #3 is too low. They should be rank #2 which leads to a Green Bay Vs. San Diego Superbowl!!!!

  103. Are you F-ing kidding me? Bengals and Ravens will scrap for this division! You havn’t seen fight yet! This “d” is built to last! Yea’ corners may be suspect…But worthlessburger, Flactate and Colt Mcquit can be had! C’mon 32, run the friggin’ ball! It’s your time, roll with it! Awsome victory on sunday…that’s all we can ask!

  104. Give the Bengals a little credit. So I guess you’re predicting they will coast to 15 straight losses. I predict you will have them moving up every week from now on, but when you start at 32 there’s no where else to go. I just hope you can scrap the sarcastic remarks for at least one week this year.

  105. “Coach John Fox needs to realize that those Tebow chants will only get louder if they are ignored”

Coach John Fox also realizes the more he listens to fans, the sooner he’ll be sitting with them in the stands.

  106. I continue to sympathize with the good people that happen to be Steelers fans, and find themselves embarrassed by stairwayto7, trophycase, etc. Obscene bias + wit can actually be entertaining sometimes. But obscenely biased dumbf*cks just irritate the rest of us.

  107. rc33 says: Sep 13, 2011 10:28 AM

Not buying the Saints at #2.
    No way.
    ——–

Me neither. Their defense has a LONG way to go. Steeler fans whining about 11, they don’t even belong THAT high. They may not give up 35 every week, but they are not going to be that good defensively. And you know The Rapist is good for giving away a couple of games himself.

Giants played a bad second half, but 24 is downright seizure inducing.

  108. Pats give up 400 yards passing to a qb who wouldn’t start on any other team besides the colts, and fans are complaining they should be higher? Cowboys…? Cement them in the teens outside the penumbra of playoff teams. Romo is a loser.

  109. Bills at 13? nah. KC hasn’t been good since they played the raiders in arrowhead last year. Beating an inferior team badly shouldn’t mean that much.

  110. How many times do the Jets have to pull off a 4th Qr comeback before it stops becoming “lucky”. They’ve done it 6 times in the last year (Colts, Texans, Lions, Browns, Broncos last year…Cowboys sunday). Not saying they don’t have a lot to fix…but to say they should be below Buffalo is just plain stupid.

  111. I think the Bucs should be among the bottom feeders. 19 was extremely generous. You really can’t expect too much from a team with one of the lowest payrolls in the NFL. You can’t win a SuperBowl with a bunch of kids and not one veteran on offense.

Glazers, you can’t expect to sell out when you put a team on the field that a local high school like Armwood could probably give you a run for your money. You blew it in free agency. Sell the team to someone who wants to win games. Give Tampa a shot at least.

  112. OK…. I’m trying to understand the logic:

The Saints are #2 after barely losing to the Pack/#1

The Vikings are #24 after barely losing to the Chargers/#3

Shouldn’t the Vikes be ranked better or the Chargers worse? Or is it that the Pack and /or Saints should be worse?

I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
    – Z

  113. @southpaw

you want something out of how well your defense played? I guess since you offered so much to the game on Sunday you feel all journalists and media should be kissing the ground the Baltimore Ravens football team walks on. Get real dude it is one single victory and enjoy that. Ya know for as much as Raven fans make fun of Steeler fans you guys are a bunch of emotional softies who feel entitled to everything for no good reason.

  114. I hope he has a good game, but its really hard to cheer for them to win. I guess I’m good either way as long as he has a good game.

    __________________________

I am going to go out on a limb and say that Vikings starting QB not being able to throw for 40 yards has something to do with where they are ranked.

  116. @ OttoGraham

How many TD’s did the Ravens defense score in the 35-7 victory on 9/11? Just asking genius

  117. So wait… You put the Fins at 30, the Texans at 10, then two of you guys pick the Fins over the Texans in Week 2… Newborns could compile better rankings.

  118. If the Colts come away with the #1 pick I’ll be pissed. 14 years with Manning and then they get ANOTHER likey franchise QB?!? That freakin’ horseshoe on their helmet sure will be appropriate.
