Ochocinco on drop: “I let that one get away. It happens. It’s football”

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw for 387 yards on Sunday, but the best pass he threw may have been the perfect deep ball that hit Chad Ochocinco in the hands — and then hit the ground.

Asked about that drop by Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com after the game, Ochocinco didn’t have much to say about it.

I let that one get away,” he said. “It happens. It’s football.”

There isn’t much of anything Ochocinco can say right now. The ball doesn’t get thrown his way very often, and when it does he’s as likely to drop it or run a bad route — which he did on one of Brady’s four interceptions — as he is to catch it.

Through three games in New England, Ochocinco has caught five passes. To say he’s been a non-factor wouldn’t even be accurate: At this point, he’s actively holding the Patriots’ offense back.

  1. No Chad, you let TWO get away. As noted in the article, You were also responsible for one of the interceptions by not running your route correctly.

As much as I want to see Chad succeed in New England, it is becoming clear that he is not mentally mastering this offense. We just finished Week Three, Chad. Figure it out quickly.

  2. Yup. I love Ocho, but he is getting in the way of Taylor Price’s development and not contributing. I’d hate to see him go, but I don’t think he has more than two or three more games like this before it is time to cut bait. Price is too god to be sitting idly by while we wait and wait for Ocho to figure it out. I would guess he better get his act together by Jets week or he is gone.

  3. I bet Teddy Bruschi can’t hold his water about this one. He is itching for Someone to ask his opinion on this drop….

  4. Great fecievers drop passes,. example roddy white yesterday for a sure touchdown all alone right in his hands, pierre garcon another big gainer all alone right in his hands. chad gets scrutiny,. brach didnt catch a pass no one says a thing and he knows offense better than anyone. I think everyne should see what happens at themidway before criticizing.. the problem isnt ocho,. the problem is not establishing the run, not being able to stop big play passing. New england stops one of those big gainers they win.

  5. I was all for this when we signed him, and I have tried to stay excited about the possibilities, but at this point I have to pile on and say “CUT HIM ALREADY…. WTF!”

  6. Cut this putz, now please. He has no heart and no place on the Patriots.

Bring back Buddy Farnham, that dude played his butt of in the preseason to try and make the team. He has more heart than Ocho-Crappo.

  7. Monday morning, Belichick’s office:

BB: So what happened out there yesterday Tom? I mean four INT’s?

TB: Duh, um, I dunno coach, I just couldn’t get a feel for what the defense was doin”.

BB: Anything we can do to correct it?

TB: Um, could we go back to the way we used to do it?

    BB: What’s that Tom?

TB: Aw, ya know, we used to line up in the no huddle and the voice in that headset thingy would tell me what to do.

BB: Tom, we already talked about that and we just can’t do that anymore.

TB: Well coach, um, it sure made football easier for me.

BB: Well now you have to rely on your football IQ and your natural ability to read defenses and think ahead.

  8. When Taylor Price comes off the injured list and is ready to play, Aaron Hernandez will have a chance to get his number back….Chad has been a colossal disappointment only to those that thought he would be a major factor.

  9. At least Ocho is on the field. Did Fat Al even dress up? This is what happens when you pick up other teams’ trash. Sometimes you luck out and find a gem (Corey Dillon, Randy Moss for 1 season) and other times you find trash (Fat Albert).

  10. I don’t understand why Chad keeps getting compared to Randy Moss. Randy Moss was traded to the Patriots in MARCH. He had roughly 6 months before the first regular season football game. Chad Ochocinco has been in this system for 9 weeks? The lockout is the reason for Ocho’s poor production, not his intelligence or his heart. However, that dropped pass was completely inexcusable, but even the best drop passes on occasion.

    LAME!!!

  12. sj39, I’m not even a Pats fan and I thought your post was lame. Get a life. BB and Tom Brady could be the best coach/qb combo ever, with or without spygate. Give it a rest

  13. Title should read: High profile receiver misses high profile catch against a low profile team. Then it would accurately describe how insipid the one play was in a messy game.

  14. ocho is not the problem,. defense is the problem. couldnt stop marshall, couldnt stop jackson, couldnt stop johnson with a groin injury,.no pressure on qb yesterday. they need to find a way to win without the offense having to put up 40 points per game,.

  15. It’s not the drop, or the shoddy route running. The problem is the “it happens” attitude. Either say nothing on the subject, or show some remorse for letting the team down in a big spot. The drop (is it really a drop when he never held the ball?) had a huge impact and cost the Patriots valuable time on the clock.

  16. Okay PFT… I’ll take that Ocho getting cut rumor post now. This time make sure it’s accurate.

New England has given this guy free pass after free pass when he tanked the preseason and the first 2 games. Anyone who knows New England sports know just what a rarity it is to get a leap of faith like that from the fanbase. There are 10 other guys on the field committed to playing Patriots football, and Ocho is still playing for the Bengals. This is no longer about passing trees or chemistry. He just flat out forgot how to play football.

Pack up his Prius and get him out of here.

  17. Cut him some slack. This is all new to him. The Bengals didn’t even have a playbook. Like a fulltime scouting department, Mike Brown didn’t see the value.

  18. Holding the offense back? LMAO! Always looking for excuses as to how the mighty Pats could lose?

You know what’s holding the Pat’s offense back? The Pat’s defense. I mean come on…that defense gave up 500 yards to the Dolphins offense. bwwhahahahahah…

  19. sj39, I think you should be recieving a call from the Comedy channel any day now…

They would like to give you your own half hour show. I called them after I got up off the floor…

You had me laughing so hard I almost pissed myself. Great post!

  20. Why do the Pats bring in these old guys. I have no faith that Albert Haynesworth would have done anything for them yesterday.

We might be able to find Brady’s replacement in 5-10 years as a current starting QB today.

  21. sj39, Really? You are going to dog on Brady? I am not a NE fan, and I hate his alma mater, but Tom Brady is the best Quarterback in the NFL today, by far, a first vote HOFer, and one of the greatest professional quarterbacks of all time. Even people that know nothing about football know this.

  22. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him cut soon. He’s expendable and it would send a message, the Pats like to do that.

  23. I maintain that the Patriots’ problem continues to be on defense, NOT offense. That said, Chad’s honeymoon in New England will likely come to an end sooner rather than later if he continues to let perfectly thrown passes “get away” and run more routes incorrectly. While the Patriots offense is complex, we’re not talking subatomic particle physics. What concerns me is that Chad is not even making the grade in “Wide Receiver 101.”

  24. It’s frustrating for certain but there’s still 3/4 of the season left to play.
5 catches for 87 yards in three games is ridiculous but he’s been there throughout camp, by every indication he has worked hard and I think it’s bound to get better. No need to knee jerk and dump him….yet.

  25. The most interesting thing about this whole situation: everyone said Wes Welker was a phoney because he played next to Randy Moss and Moss opened up the field for him. Now Welker is the number one and putting up stupid numbers. What say all you haters now? As for Ochocinco, they don’t really need him. He is just a veteran body on the field at this point.

  26. It takes a special kind of idiot to knock Brady’s football IQ a day after he sets the 3-game passing record, largely by using the no huddle.

    ====================================
You’re right about the Pats’ defense. If they can’t fix that it will be another short playoff run.

Have to love someone who can talk trash when their team looks like it won’t win a game for another decade or so.

  28. Ochocinco had two good years . He always trying to be funny. Do little things on the field to get attention. He is a good football player but not a HOF.

  29. drbandkgb says: Sep 26, 2011 8:22 AM

And this is why Carson didnt want to stay in Bengalville.. Chad is a great guy but he runs bad routes… 85 will be be cut just wait and see

    —————————————————-

Just wanted to point out that Chad isn’t in Cincy anymore, and Carson still hasn’t shown up. So obviously that isn’t the only reason Carson wants to be traded. The simple fact of the matter is Carson is a quitter.

  30. As a Lions fan, I threw up when I heard El Stinko in the off season talking about how he’d love to play with Calvin Johnson. Thank God that never came to fruition.

    —————————————————–

lol more like Chad has only had 2 bad years, and is working on his 3rd bad year. Look what he did from 02 to 07. He sucked in 08, was good (not great) in 09, and was decent in 2010. And now in 2011 he sucks lol.

Yes Chad sucks now, but to say he has had only two good years is just wrong.

  32. Wait a second… are Pats fans blaming Chad for Brady’s 4 interceptions.???? That’s right, I forgot, Brady is too perfect to have a bad game.

  33. The first rule for any receiver in the NFL is when the ball is thrown to you — you MUST catch it.

It’s the pros. You drop a ball, you miss a catch, your tenure with the team is in jeopardy.

There is *always* a younger, faster, cheaper alternative out there.

I believe Chad’s days in NE are numbered.

Coach B can get !anyone! not to catch the ball.

  34. I see it’s “pile on Chad day” again. Yep, he dropped what was a sure touchdown and he should be roasted for that. But to try to pin the loss on him is just stupid. Here’s a thought…what would happen if the defense made a stop? I guess that would make way too much sense, plus it’s much easier to just blame Chad than an entire defensive unit.

No, but he was responsible for one of them, and costing the Pats 5 minutes of clock time.

  36. .

    @truecowboyfan

Did you even read the post? It said that 85 ran the wrong route once causing an intercepion.

Regarding Brady being “perfect ” ; he may not be that, but in the words of Bill Belichick, ” there’s no quarterback I’d rather have then Tom Brady. ‘

Think Jerry Jones would be interested in a Romo for Brady swap?

    .

  37. I was routing for you Chad but I sadly have to say now that it is time to move on. Brady can’t trust you but is still trying to get you involved when he needs to be focusing on hitting the open man.

I doubt the Pats will cut him because I think his salary is guarranteed this year, but as soon as Taylor Price gets healthy, Chad will be warming the bench as insurance until he says something stupid enough for Belichick to cut the cord.

  38. Nothing more than a sideshow. He is and has been for years.

However, I think he needs to stick with NE the paper champs who haven’t won a game that meant something ,other than sportscasters being able to call tom and bill geniuses for running up score or stats, in what 6 years?

Cut ocho stinko and tommy boy’s hair!

  39. Chad Ochocinco simply isn’t a very good player. Not sure why the Pats even bothered signing him.

  40. Yeah NE. Trade him to Carolina. Not everybody can conform to the “Patriot Way”. NE is sounding more like some weird cult in Utah.

I’m surprised the cheerleaders aren’t dressed like they’re on “Little House on The Prarie”

  41. I said last month that he had three week to turn it around. Well he’s down to one week to show something. Oh yeah, he makes more money than Welker as well. And yes, that defense better start showing signs of improvement or its another wasted year with Brady at QB.

  42. yep, albert haynesworth, and chad, were great pick ups…it has to be true because BSPN said it was. lmao

  43. I am a bengals fan and Chad was one of my favorites for a long time, but in his last couple of years he had more drops, flags and fumbles than anyone on our team

If Pats want to get the most out of that position they need to get rid of Chad

I am being honest not haten

  44. If he continues to do that, he will hold our offense down… Until yesterday, he wasn’t. So he’s got a shot to prove himself but he was not impressive yesterday.. Sergio Brown’s pass interference play should be getting more attention IMO, same thing with the way we drafted this year.. skipping out on defense early.

  45. I see people talking about: he cant handle the patriot way

Get out of here with that, the guy wasnt good as a bengal either and they made the team revolve around him

To think that your team is some kind of einstein football team is moronic
Its a playbook not rocket science

The bengals may suck, but they do know when to get rid of players especially WR look at housh and he was considered the best next to welker for slot

  46. I don’t think he has more than two or three more games like this before it is time to cut bait.

I’d be ok if they let him go this week, and I’m not knee-jerk reaction guy, but I’ve seen enough.

  47. sj39 REALLY?? Brady is the best Qb in the nfl and when he is finished will be a four time superbowl champion!!! The defense is absolutly terrible at this point in the season but they will get it together. As for ocho stinko lets cut him and eat that contract when price is better he will be the threat brady is looking for. BB’s man crush on 85 needs to end. The guy is nothing more than a body running bad routes and tweeting machine!!!!!

  48. it’s much easier to just blame Chad than an entire defensive unit.

    We blame them both actually.

    Plenty to go around.

But mostly, we just credit a good Buffalo team.

The Patriot Way. Not from Utah.

  49. We’re talking about a guy who named himself after the number on his jersey, and who would be completely unknown except that he runs his mouth more than T.O. Why is this a story?

  50. Yeah, who cares. Ocho is average now. Put the younger guys in there. With Branch and Welker and these TE’s, all we really need in that spot is a burner that can run fly and deep post patterns all day, get 3 50 yd balls thrown his way per game, and block downfield for the real receivers.
