Pereira thinks Vick should have been fined

AP

The NFL decided not to fine Eagles quarterback Mike Vick for his comments following Sunday’s loss to the Giants.

Former NFL V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira disagrees with that approach.  Pereira, who used to feel the Wrath of Tuna as an official and who now works as the FOX rules analyst, appeared on Thursday’ PFT Live, and I asked him that question right out of the gates.

Pereira thinks Vick should be fined.

“I think what he did was basically throw the 17 referees in the National Football League under the bus and put them in a very difficult position,” Pereira said.  “A referee now based on what Mike said, as far as I’m concerned, is in a lose-lose situation.  If he calls roughing the passer on a hit against Michael Vick, then everybody is going to say that they taunted him into the foul.  If he doesn’t, then they more heap criticism on him based on what Mike said.

“To me, that’s a reason why the league should deal with comments made by players.  But they traditionally don’t.”

Pereira went on to explain that the league goes easier on players because players are more likely to be influenced by emotion, and that coaches are usually held to a higher standard.  Still, Pereira thinks players should be held accountable for comments that place pressure on the officials.

Vick’s comments clearly do; everyone will be watching the man in the white hat on Sunday to see if/when the yellow flag will fly whenever Vick is hit.

Pereira’s full appearance is well worth a listen.  He’s a valuable resource that helps fans understand a complex aspect of football, and we appreciate the folks at FOX making him available, so that we can help PFT Planet know the rules a little bit better.

  1. This guy just needs to go away. Whenever Fox brings him on he NEVER disagrees with the ref’s. he acts like he still works for the NFL. not Fox.

  2. The refs can call whatever they want whenever they want. Wtf is a FINE going to do about a players opinion?

IDIOT. Stay on the sidelines, and off the field. Stop getting personal about a players opinion, and nothing more….

  3. Everything last year was all good for Vick when he was tearing it apart… Now cause there losing he is complaining… Send him back to the prison cell and see if anyone cares… Dude is one of luckiest people in the world with a 100 million dollar contract playing a game that people love… Fine his ass!

  4. Then can the refs be fined for NOT making calls that can put his career in jeopardy? He is just going to bat for his “fellow” refs. If he were to honestly look at the situation, he would see Vick doesn’t get the calls he should get. People are going after him because they know they can. Also, the ref in the Falcons game should have been fined for not throwing out Dunta Robinson on what obviously was a dirty hit. How bout that for fines?!

  5. Between trying to suspend locked our players and the way the NFL is fining for “hits”, if they started fining for “comments”, I am sure the NFLPA would be in an uproar. (Even though it has been done in years past)

  6. If you’re going to fine the players for criticizing officials then you should fine officials for blowing calls OR force officials to hold post-game press conferences with the media to explain their reasoning on questionable calls.

  7. Mike Pereira, we get it…you are a dog lover and don’t like Vick. Get over it. You sound like a cranky old man. You were a terrible ref and frankly are doing a terrible job now on Fox.

  8. Players or coaches for that matter shouldn’t be fined at all. It’s free speech, but tell that to Führer Goodell.

  9. Pereira needs to shut up..the more he talks about this, the more he comes across as a bigot In turn, making it more difficult for the refs in the following weeks.

Pereira, look in the mirror. Its not Mike, its you.

  10. What is this Pereira guy talking about??? How did he throw officials under the bus by just saying, he doesn’t know why he doesn’t get the calls th@ other QB’s get?…th@’s his observation…why wouldn’t he have a right to it without being subject to a fine?? We all know th@ certain players in every sport are shown a bit a favoritism @ times… nothing new about this concept…

  11. And that attitude speaks clearly regarding what is one of the great problems in the NFL.

Everyone agrees that officiating is inconsistent (Ok, maybe not Pereira) and sometimes nothing short of bad. But if any player or coach dares to suggest an imperfection in the officiating, they’re fined. “How dare you speak up!” It is the goal of the NFL and their officials to deny the presence of the “elephant in the room” and hide their collective head in the sand.

Make them full time professionals, fine THEM if they perform significantly poorly, require physical testing to weed out the fat-old-squinting-hobbling turds that presently roam the field, and put this multi-billion dollar industry in the hands of persons who are fit and prepared to do their jobs.

  12. Um.. I like refs were supposed to be professionals?? They’re not supposed to listen to the criticisms from the fans, media. Just like the players are expected not too.
Just referee the game as you see it. You shouldn’t let a players comments influence your judgements on gameday. Whether Vick was fined or not, just do your job. At the end of the day, your boss will review your job, and if replays show you were correct, you have nothing worry about.
Football refs are becoming more like baseball umpires.. finding a way to inject themselves into the game.

  13. Mike Pereira has already established himself as a person who hates Mike Vick. Thats fine, he has that right. But for him to look at a game with bias, and tell me that a blatent non call is not a penalty is horse muck.

This “announcement” doesnt surprise me in the least. And it has nothing to do with other officials. Just the fact that he is a hater.

Anyone can dispute that Vick doesnt get 90% of the late hit calls. Im sorry that Mike Pereira reviewed numbers and saw that the Eagles get a large number of roughing the passer calls. But just because they get some calls, doesnt excuse the complete lack in other situations. Donovan McNabb had 2 seasons ended due to blatent late hits, more than 3-5 seconds late that were never called.

Expecting them to treat Vick any different is absurd. They treat mobile QBs differently. Ben Roethlisberger is in the same boat. But regardless…Vick is getting nailed in the pocket almost twice as much as any other QB. And that has nothing to do with our OL. It has to do with a DL seeing a clean path to hit him, and knowing that 90% of the time, it wont get called.

It is ridiculous that he is getting hit 2 yards out of bounds, and they let that go too.

Bring on the thumbs down haters. I know this site is 99% anti Vick. Whatever.

Amen to that. I’m so sick of EVERY sports league protecting these guys. Not only should the require refs to hold post game press conferences (I mean, if a player has to get up there and talk about how he just blew the biggest game of his life, shouldn’t the refs?), but the NFL should release the scorecard/grades for each ref in each game.

And since the NFL is really a fans game, maybe they should allow the fans to then vote for the playoff refs. I guarantee you’d have twice the amount of votes as you currently get for the Pro Bowl.

They can even sell advertising space on the ballots, so it’s a revenue generator too.

  15. “A referee now based on what Mike said, as far as I’m concerned, is in a lose-lose situation. If he calls roughing the passer on a hit against Michael Vick, then everybody is going to say that they taunted him into the foul. If he doesn’t, then they more heap criticism on him based on what Mike said.”

Did Pereira just say this? What?

How about the ref throws flags on penalties and doesn’t throw flags on things that aren’t penalties just like they are suppose to? If the officials on the field are concerned about “Gee, should I throw the flag? What will ppl think?” then they shouldn’t be officials. Period. What they should be asking themselves is, “Was that roughing the passer?” and not even worry about who the qb is…

Pereira you made yourself look like and idiot and pretty much threw the entire officiating system under the bus with these comments imo.

  16. Perhaps if Periera’s former group of officials called what they see, instead of a preconceived notion of what they should see( because of marching orders from idiots like Periera formerly, and now a new guy), QB’s wouldn’t throw them under the bus. Nowhere in the rule book does it say mobile QB’s should take any hit the defense feels like dishing out, even when they’re in the pocket. That’s the garbage you’ve been trying to sell fans for years. If it’s a foul for Brady, it’s a foul for Roethlisbeger, and a foul for Vick. Period. Yes, once he moves past the line of scrimmage, he’s a running back, and by the way, you can’t just do anything to a RB; even they have certain protection like, horsecollar, fasemask, etc. But in the pocket, he deserves the same calls everyone else gets. What Periera said about mobile QB’s having less protection is nonsense, and one of the reasons I’m glad this phony no longer has a job that matters. Also, what Vick did does not put them in a “difficult position”. Players and coaches jockey for calls every week. The Eagles opponent last week, the Giants, has a coach that begs for calls from the beginning to the end of the game, it’s just something teams do, hoping they’ll get a call down the line. You’re damn right Vick is hoping they’ll look closer at the hits he gets, that’s the point. It wouldn’t make him any different than any player that goes up to the ref after a play and says”Ref, that OT is holding me on every play” Maybe he gets a call later, maybe he doesn’t, but planting the seed is something everyone does. Fining them actually gives the fans the impression that you’re trying to cover up incompetence, rather than just trying to get the call right.

  17. Just on principal, Vick should be fined for leaving the game with a bruised non-throwing hand when Romo played with a broken rib and punctured lung and led his team to victory.

  18. “If he calls roughing the passer on a hit against Michael Vick, then everybody is going to say that they taunted him into the foul.”

Wow…really? Isn’t that what Tom Brady does everytime he gets hit? All Brady has to do is turn and look at the ref and they throw the flag. Thats Vick’s point. He won’t get that call.

  19. For someone who didn’t like Vick complaining about non-calls , this dude is going EVERYWHERE to complain about Vick . Your crying more then #7 ever has .

To all the Eagles haters : I hope you guys enjoyed the first 3 weeks cause the Eagles will turn it around this week . In all reality we outplayed everyone we faced so far and should be 3-0 . In both losses we had 4th qtr leads (and dominated ATL) till Vick came out . But we will win the East again while you sit at home hating on us … GO EAGLES !

    ———————————————————-

Freedom of speech has NO bearing in the private sector. It only frees you from government prosecution not from a private company or organization.

  21. Well they won’t fine home cause he is special! The point is the NFL will say what he said was his opinion but there’s been many players that express there opinion and got fined. NFL doesn’t want to be the bad guy when it’s obvious he question and trashed numerous times the NFL officials the ability to do there job.

  22. The refs is this league get a free ride. They can blow as many plays as they want and never have to answer to the public for it.
Players and coaches on the other hand are required to make themselves available in most cases.
So NFL, you want to stop players and coaches from griping, then make officials available to the media after games.

and the milk streaming from the teet of the NFL down Pereira’s throat continues to flow.

    Not too sure it’s milk.

  24. How about they just worry about getting the call right. There’s no extra pressure if the officials stay consistent. From pocket passers or those who tend to make more plays with their feet, just be consistent with the calls.

  25. Pereira is the same dingbat who runs the officiating for the Pac 12.

He tried to make it a penalty for the Oregon Ducks to use their gloves to form wings when they celebrate a touchdown.

    What a clownshoe.

  26. eaglesw00t says:Sep 30, 2011 9:17 AM

And Im putting the over/under on dog comments at 16. Lets see who the first unoriginal clown is.
    ***************************************
    just for you…

why does anyone even pay attentions to vicks comments, he’s all bark and no bite!

why don’t we discuss a topic with more substance, something we can really sink our teeth into!

i can’t believe vick, the way the just threw the refs to the dogs. (dogs are kind of like wolves right)?

now if a ref gives vick the call, he’ll be accused of being his bitch.

    shall i keep going?

  27. Vick’s lack of character is showing through only a couple of months into that silly $100 million contract. Bravo, Jeffrey Lurie, bravo.

  28. Would someone at PFT please tell us why the comments of Mike Pereira are so widely publicized? I realize public/fan opinion now has zero influence on corporation and corporate media output, but we don’t give a flying eff what Mike Pereira thinks. Why do you?

    Go Lions! Go Badgers!

  29. 2 questions:

    1) Why aren’t the referee’s made available for interviews after the game?

    2) Can people stop referring to this guy as “Fox’s rules guru?!?” He’s like the refs’ version of a lobbyist!
    ________________________________

He struggled as a ref, got “promoted,” now has parlayed that into a lucrative contract with Fox. Hell, sounds like he and DNabb have something in common – being able to turn controversy into cash money!

  30. This is how I see it do I think refs blows or miss calls yes I do. Did they miss some calls in that game yes. But the bottom line here is that their offense line is bad very bad. Right now they are not looking to good. I am sure all eagles’ fans right now are saying we are the dream team and we are supposed to be 3-0 and by the end of the season we are going to be 16-0. STOP right there Instead of buy all the top notch guy in free agent fix the problem that you have and that is your defense and your offense line and maybe your quarterback won’t get hit as much. Here is something to think about look at the bears quarterback he is getting killed out there but wait I don’t hear him crying the blues or Matt Ryan so the bottom line here is stop blaming people and look at people in the front office or you ever it may be and ask them to fix your offense line and defense line because that is the problem not the refs YOU CAN’T BUY CHAMPIONSHIP DREAM TEAM

  31. Pereira is right! .and you people are a bunch of despicable LOSERS! Who was there to throw flags on behalf of the dogs while Vick was electrocuting their gentials!

  32. So Calvin didn’t make a catch (but Cruz did) and 2 Giants did NOT head butt Vick in the chin..I see now….and there WERE weapons of mass destruction.

  33. I dont understand why this is still an issue. Why is it only Vick that is being mentioned? why arent there any articles about Rex Ryan or D’Angelo Hall calling out the refs this past weekend? The obsession over this guy is ridiculous. Im a philly fan but the coverage the Media is giving them is insane!! they are 1-2!!!!!!

  34. Sorry to all the haters here, but Pereira’s right. The NFL is handling Vick with kid gloves, for some reason. If anyone else had said what Vick said … particularly an owner … they’d have been fined.

That said, I think the idea of having the refs forced to attend a post-game press conference is an *excellent* idea. The players are not allowed to dodge the press, or they can be fined. Why shouldn’t the officials be required to talk about their jobs, too? They are an intrinsic part of the game. I don’t understand why officials get away without having to deal with the press. Baseball umpires talk to the press, football referees should, too.

  35. I’m starting to wonder whether the NFL, Fox, and Pereira had some sort of deal in place for Pereira to be put into a position where he would be able to defend any and every call the officials make to the watching public. He is nothing more than a PR representative for the officials.

  36. @al0049 : First off no Eagles fan thinks were a dream team , the media has shoved that corny phrase down peoples throats , amd tools like you just open wide and swallow it . Every team has weaknesses and Philly is no exception , but in reality we should be 3-0 . We dominated Atl , outplayed the Giants and would have won both games if Vick stayed in . Our O-line has actually been decent . Our LB’s have been awful , but our secondary is coming together & our D-line has leads the league in sacks . Your a fool if you really think were trying to buy a championship (a la Redskins) . We were a 10-6 playoff team
last year . We have managed our cap
well for years for this situation and
every player we signed were positions
of need . Granted , were not a Super Bowl team at this moment , but if/when the team jells there is not a team we cant compete with . The Eagles will win the division AGAIN and you can enjoy hating while were in the playoffs !!

of need . Were obviously not a Super Bowl team at this moment , but our team has the potential to be great and

  37. Glad I am not the only one sick of this guy! Fox thinks they have something really special in him and never shies away from a chance to get his “analysis”. Good thing I record 9er games and fast forward through all of that garbage, otherwise I am watching the RedZone…the best way to watch every game besides your own team’s game. I am so sick of football “analysts”, pregame shows, in game Pereira updates, and the incessant commercials. I just record games and start watching them 30-45 minutes after the start and blast through all of that garbage. Basically, I recommend everyone do the same.

  38. NFL, and all sports, need to get rid of fining people for critizing the refs/umps. If the refs make a bad call they deserve to be talked about by the players they impacted.

  39. Pereira should be fined! How dare he undermine the authority and judgement of the commissioner by publicly calling into question the commissioners decision not to impose a penalty in the case. It is impossible for the commissioner to do his job and retain the necessary objectivity of his position if he has people like Pereira constantly calling his judgment into question publicly. Pereira needs to toughen up, keep his mouth shut, and just let the system work.

I imagine you haven’t played a game above the peewee level, if that. By the by, Pereira is annoying, beginning to believe his own press clippings.

    ———————————————-

And Dallas should be fined for blowing the “punctured lung” BS story out of proportion to make their average chokeartist QB look like a hero.

  42. “Pereira’s full appearance is well worth a listen. He’s a valuable resource that helps fans understand a complex aspect of football, and we appreciate…”

Talk about kissing A! This couldn’t be any thicker if you tried! This guy is annoying and gets muted just like the rest of the TV crews.

  43. isn’t pereira’s job to throw refs under the bus on live television? i mean, they check in with him to see if the refs got the calls right… even though he rarely says they effed something up, he’s still there to possibly say they got the call wrong.. but if he calls out a mistake, it’s not “calling out” the refs, right? that makes sense. this guy only has a job because of coaches and players who do what mike vick did.. if he keeps biting the hands that feed him, he’s gonna end up “unemployed” (used quotes, cuz of course he’s still employed by the NFL)

  44. Any other coach or player would have been fined for his comments. Last year when all the fines started one of the linebackers from Steelers voiced his displeasure by calls and was then assulted by the league office. How many coaches have been fined as well for post game hits on the refs.
