Leonhard says Revis will cover Welker, most of the time

Friday’s episode of NBC SportsTalk on VERSUS included an interview of Jets safety Jim Leonhard.

Peter King asked Leonhard how the Jets would deal with Pats receiver Wes Welker, who has 40 catches in four games.

Leonard said that the plan is to put cornerback Darrelle Revis on Welker “as much as possible.”  It won’t be every play, but it will be more often than not.

“You have to try to take away what a team does best,” Leonhard said.

The Jets face the Patriots Sunday at 4:15 p.m. ET in New England, giving the fans plenty of time to get “lubed up” for the game.

  1. Leonard is one tough dude. That peel back block Satele from the Raiders put on him was one of the most vicious, yet clean, blocks I’ve ever seen.

Dude got up and walked away.

  2. finally Welker gets the “elite receiver” status from the press by highlighting his matchup with Revis

the man cannot be covered by another man

revis will grab his hammy by quarter 2

  3. then what do you so with gronk, Hernandez, and possibly Ocho? oh yeah, branch too….this pats team has so many more weapons and will gameplan for this…

In other words, what Welker does pretty much every week.

By the way, all these quotes flying around from all these Jets players and their coach …… anyone notice you don’t see any from any Patriots players or THEIR coach?

  5. I hope Revis stays on Welker the entire game. They have nobody who can handle Gronk, and if Hernandez plays, too, the Jests are in trouble.

  6. Welker is goin to revis island and when revis is on him brady wont even look at him nevermind throw to him. Watch the game and see. Welker wont be the one who has a huge day. He will have to throw to one of his 10 other targets out there on the field.

  7. Most of the time. And ten times he’ll be watching Welker’s back as Welker blazes by him for yet another TD.

  8. .

Single coverage? The Jets should activate Cromartie’s entire practice squad of baby mamas.

    .

  9. I can’t understand why someone would come out and say how they will defend the other team. This where Rex has to establish some discipline and keep his team under wraps just a little bit.

  10. To phillynac , It’s not brain surgery on who revis was going to cover everyone knew that it was going to revis on welker. And for all the people who are saying that they have to many weapons ha ha, that’s what they said last year about the jets. How are they going to cover all their weapons and we did no problem. Don’t you people think that Rex will have a game plan for the tight ends gronk and that Mexican. With revis on welker game over for him. Jets by 6 go jets

  11. We get it, the patriots offense can move the ball and score.
The bigger question is, Can they stop anybody?
There’s no Revis to cover Plaxico, Holmes or Keller. In fact, there;s no one at all that can cover in NE. or rush the passer. or stop the run.

  12. dlk47823 says,

Better question, who is going to throw to them? Sanchez ???

    hahahahahahaaha

  13. Revis Island??? Wait until Sanchez sees….
    Wilfork Archipelago! 😀

I doubt a Jets player would give up the exact scheme they plan to use. Either way, Pats’ O has to be ready to adjust because the Jets’ D will.
