Norv on Rex: Where are the rings he guaranteed the last two years?

AP

Norv Turner is one of the most mild-mannered coaches in the NFL, and Rex Ryan is one of the most boastful. So who would have thought that when the two of them had an exchange, Ryan would end up backtracking, and Turner would end up roasting Rex?

It all started with Ryan saying that if the Chargers had hired him instead of Turner in 2007, he would have a couple Super Bowl rings by now. That sure sounded like a dig at Turner for failing to get the Chargers to the Super Bowl.

But Ryan insisted that he meant no offense, and he called Turner today to say so. Turner confirmed with reporters that he had spoken to Ryan, wasn’t angry and wouldn’t be reprising the Jim Harbaugh-Jim Schwartz confrontation when the Jets play the Chargers on Sunday.

“It really was between he and I. I think we’ve had enough coaching drama in the league the last few days and we don’t need any more,” Turner said.

And then Turner took a shot at Ryan’s propensity for saying his Jets will win the Super Bowl.

“I hadn’t seen his quote and I was a little bit surprised by the call,” Turner said. “And then after I saw the quote, I didn’t have a chance to ask him this, but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he’s guaranteed the last couple of years.”

Those rings are on the fingers of Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy.

  1. Probably the first time Rex can honestly tell the other guy to shut up….Norv is considered the biggest failure when it comes to getting his team to the Super Bowl.

  2. Norvell,

Rex ordered toe rings instead of the traditional ol’ finger ones…if you wanna see them you’ll have to pull off his sockies and beg like a good boy.

  3. hahahahahahahahaaha this is magical. This post game handshake will be classic. They should set up an octagon at midfield after.

  4. Once again, the Ryan coaching family is talking without having been able to back up his own self-promoting comments.

Looks like the “hoof ‘n mouth” disease runs in the family.

Like father, Buddy, like son, Rex and Rob.

  5. I look forward to the Chargers knockin’ Rexy and his mediocre team all over the field on Sunday.

  6. That’s funny I asked myself the same question after Rex’s comments.

On a side note, neither one of these guys needs the attention of how few superbowl appearances they have. They both lack the hardware and should cut it out.

  7. Norv, you shouldn’t lower yourself to Rex’s level. The guy is nothing but an over weight clown that provides comic relief for the NFL. Everyone just laughs at him and the Jets. You should have too.

  8. Rex Ryan does have a ring, but can hardly pound his chest when ray Lewis, rod Woodson, Mcallister, goose, mucrary and Sam Adams wins it for you. I am so glad the ravens picked harbs over Rex, atleast we are respected organization, the jets are a effin joke. Well played norv, handled it with class, plus your gonna have your way with that offense

  9. For a guy that’s fielding a below average offense and a slightly above average defense, he really has a lot to say…

  10. @failcopter

Speaking of being a “fail” you “failed” to comprehend the point of the article. Turner has not been flappin’ his yapper’ every year saying that he will win the Super Bowl as Ryan has.

  11. Haha. You know you’re a joke in the league when Norv Turner rips you. Great stuff.

  12. I’m a Pats fan and will admit to anyone that Rex has done a great job with the Jets. I hate him, but I cannot get around the fact that he got his team to two straight AFC CGs. Great coaches withstand the test of time and we’ll see how long Ryan can keep this going. If he said that crap about Norv, than he’s an ass*. But he’s still done a great job.

  13. Ground and pound, the ship has been righted, they’re just off a stunning win at home versus Miami. Right.

If the Jets lose at San Diego, Rex will be flabbergasted and dumbfounded just like he has been after all their losses.

I think the guy is losing/has lost it. I’d like to think that getting shut out at home by an injury-decimated team from Green Bay last October 31 started the decline. He had no answer for it.

  14. It’s too bad that Bill Belicick isn’t an arrogant blowhard. He could come out and say that he would have ANOTHER two rings if he had coached the Jets the last two years.

    Zing

  15. For those of you old enough to remember, Rex has become this generations Jerry Glanville.

Which means when he crashes and burns with the Jets (no pun) he’ll get hired somewhere else, make a terrible team competitive on the field but never win anything of note and run the same schtick in the process.

    Just watch.

  16. Norv is 45-23 so far on THIS coaching gig,
but you’d think he was 23-45 given all the
crap it’s fashionable to give him.

Look, I’m not saying Norv is “Coach of the Year”
or anything, but anything over .500 is good
in the NFL. Yes, A.J. Smith has usually given
Norv solid rosters, but still, .662 is still .662,
I don’t blame the man for being annoyed at being routinely called “horrible” while winning 2/3 of his games (and 1/2 his playoff games). He takes the abuse admirably gracefully…and sometimes (like today) gently needles those who dump on him.

  17. Can’t stand the Chargers, but in the realm of coaches, regardless of what team they coach, score one for Norv. Good for someone on Ryan’s level calling him out for his annoyingly inaccurate guarantees.

  18. “Norv gets an +1

As a Raider fan let’s hope sexy Rexy can find a way to coach his Jets to a win over the Bolts on Sunday!”

Don’t disparage Rex Grossman’s nickname by using it with Rex Ryan

  19. The reason more coaches don’t respond to Wrecks’ nonsense is they see through his act as Woody Johnson’s PSL carnival barker. The idea is that if Wrecks says/does enough outrageously provocative things, fans will be fooled into considering the Jets relevant. Problem is, the act’s shelf life is swiftly nearing expiration.

  20. rex really needs to shave the top of his head, dye the sides orange, start wearing a big red nose, buy a small car that he and ten of his buddies can fit into, and learn how to juggle. if you’re going to constantly act like a clown, you might as well do it right.

  21. This from a guy who shouldn’t even be a head coach. He’s done nothing with some very talented teams. He is like a throttle, keeping a very good team from taking it to the next level. Ryan is right. They would have at least gone to the SB if not won it by now. Norv has pictures of somebody, because that is the only reason he has a job.

  22. Im curious, what does Norv have to backup? He asked a simple question that points out Rex didn’t follow thru on his guarantee of winning the super bowl. Some of you clowns are commenting “let’s see you back it up Norv…” Joke… Norv is a class act unlike Rex… You douches need to reread the article…

  23. You know its bad when a guy who should have never been elevated past the Offensive Coordinator position is throwing bombs that actually have bite. Rex needs to shut his hole until he fullfills at least some of his outragous garuntees.

  24. So Rex is pretty much saying the chargers are a better team since he would have done better with them then he has with the jets. And he is complaining because they are favored over his team. Make up your mind and stop saying things to get attention especially when they don’t make sense. Chargers are 4-2, Jets are 3-3 and the Chargers have a better team. Thats why they are favored.

  25. I hope Mathews and Tolbert show LT how to run hard when they crush Can’t Miss Cromartie!

  26. well norv does have two winning SB rings way back being Jimmy’s O coordinator on the 93-94 back to back girls SB wins with the triplits. this is from an Eagle fan. yea none as HC. guess Andy has one from pack days as well. oh shoot nevermind 🙂 no i’m not giving up on Reid like the overly loud segment of our fanbase. geez! I’m still in Andy’s corner had to throw that out there.

  27. Truly great coaches never feel the need to yap away about things that never happened. The Ryans all talk a big game but not one of them ever won anything as a head coach in the NFL. Rex is a .500 coach in 3rd place right now, no more, no less, as well as an obese windbag with diarrhea of the mouth.

  28. But I thought Rexie had called the Chargers and cleared the air that he was COMPLIMENTING (backhandedly at best) Turner and Smith. Somehow it appears Norvell fails to find the compliment, humor, whatever Ryan was getting at, other than opining that if he was hired by the Chargers, he’d have at least as many rings as he has given himself in the past two preseasons.

  29. 2 big thumbs up for Norv! Its about time someone stands up to that obese, toe licking bully portraying himself as a head coach. Now fire up the Bolts and kick some bleep but wear steel TOE boots for protection:)

Not defending Rex or anything, but hey Norv, where are your rings?

his rings are probably in his trophy case at home, or his desk

from when he won 2 superbowls with the cowboys

    you mensa

  31. .

While it’s true that Norv’s playoff record is questionable. Several of those losses came at the hands of the Patriots, who just seem to have the Chargers number.

Additionally, I’ve seen San Diego players do some of the most ridiculous things in order to lose games. I doubt that Norv teaches such stupidity at practice.

    .

  32. Rex didn’t get hired in SD because his arrogant style, not his coaching (which by the way is extremely generic on offense). This guy will never win a SB, period. Just the like Gangreen fanbase, Rex is arrogant and unworthy of a title.

  33. The Jets will never win it all anytime soon. Why? Because Rex Ryan and that front office are horrible at drafting players. How many Rex Ryan draft picks are full time starters?
Rex has made his name off of Eric Mangini, he is the one who gets the credit for the vast majoirity of good players on the field, including Darelle Reavis. Rex brought in a few washed up vets from the Ravens and a ober hyped cornerback in Cromartie. Drafted a bust at QB that the team will have to live with for years to come. They have very little cap room and are pretty much stuck with an average,at best. team.

  34. I have laughed heartily at Norv’s misfortunes over the years, but I’d buy him a drink for finally having the guts to say what the whole football loving world is thinking.

    Questions need answers Rexy.

  35. Let’s just be honest here. Rex Ryan is better a coach than Norv Turner. So maybe he wouldn’t have won any SB’s in SD, but he would sure as hell come a lot closer than Norv has for sure.

  36. I’m glad somebody called out Norv and the Lord of No Rings GM out there. At least Rex has been to 2 AFC title games and was up at the half in one, with a rookie QB…i can’t wait for this post-game handshake either! LOL

  37. Hate the jets, but tbh if you think about it.

Rex took Bart Scott and Mark Sanchez to two AFC title games, has won a playoff game against Brady…

who knows what the dude could’ve done with the Charger’s loaded roster.

    Shaun Phillips/Philip Rivers > Sanchez/Scott.

  38. Norv: it’s “between him and me,” not “between he and I.”

Rex: you’re now officially the Uncle Rico of the NFL.

    ———————————————-
actually that would be marty schottenheimer

  40. Maybe the NFL can fill those dead days between the draft and training camp with steel cage matches between coaches.

  41. its ok because Norv isn’t flaunting the SB rings that he doesn’t have the way Rex is.

  42. I said it when the Jests lost that Rex and company would be “quiet” until they finally won a game and then would start with the b.s. again. The only thing Rex and the Jests are champions of are the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” award………….listening to Rex and the Jests has me missing Brett Favre, LOL

  43. Turner is not a good coach. he had a great roster and did little to nothing with it. They were a 14 win team, and then he came, and all of a sudden they weren’t. A team might as well hire Herm Edwards. Coaches who consistently produce mediocre results.

  44. LMAO, Ryan had that coming and then some.

Ryan talks the talk and cannot walk the walk. He needs to shut his yap and produce.

  45. Very funny! However I believe Rex would of had them in the Super Bowl since the Chargers play in a garbage division they would of been playing home playoff games. I dont know if he would of won the Bowl but he def would of had them there.

  46. I now love Norv Turner.

Norv is decent guy. Solid football background. All I can say is everyone commenting on what a bad coach Norv is ought to be glad what they do for a living is out in the public eye to get nitpicked and picked apart. He’s not Lombardi, but he’s not shuck like Ryan.

  47. From now on, to have all his bases covered, Rex will guarantee that he would win a SB if he were the coach on EVERY team. So once a year, he will be right one out of 32 times.
