Rex Ryan: “We’re going to be tough to beat”

After sticking his foot in his mouth about how many rings he’d have if he coached the Chargers, Jets coach Rex Ryan has promised not to talk any more about Super Bowl rings.

But Ryan is still Ryan, and that means he’s still talking. And after having a day to reflect on Sunday’s win over the Chargers, Ryan said he’s feeling very confident in his team.

“Absolutely, if we play like that we’re going to be tough to beat,” Ryan said. “There is no doubt.”

At 4-3, Ryan’s team is still behind both the Patriots and the Bills in the AFC East, and there are six AFC teams with better records than the Jets. But Ryan says his team always goes on a late-season run.

“We’ll make our run,” Ryan said. “We’re 4-3. We’re behind where I thought we’d be, but we still have a lot of football in front of us and we’re playing teams that we have to beat.”

The last two seasons have ended with the Jets in the AFC Championship Game. Ryan doesn’t see any reason they can’t go a step further this season.

“I can certainly understand why people would say, ‘Well, they’re not as good as this team or this team,’” Ryan said. “I mean both of those teams [2009 and 2010] went to the AFC Championship Game. We’ll see if this team can go to that spot or beyond.”
