The Vikings have finally issued a formal statement after two days of negative developments regarding the proposed construction of a new stadium in Minnesota. Needless to say, the Vikings aren’t pleased with either the decision not to allow the local stadium partner to impose a sales tax without a public vote or the sudden opposition by legislative leaders to a special session later this month aimed at resolving the issue.
“The Vikings are concerned about the turn of events surrounding a stadium solution in Minnesota,” the team said. “While we have been encouraged by the efforts of Governor Dayton and the four caucus leaders to seriously discuss this issue, these recent developments are very disappointing. The Vikings stadium issue has been heavily debated in the public for over 10 years. With less than 90 days left on the team’s lease, the urgency to act is on us.”
There are actually less than 60 days remaining on the team’s lease. And that means in less than 60 days the Vikings will be free to leave, barring a new lease at the Metrodome. But there won’t be a new lease at the Metrodome without a deal for a new stadium.
Maybe it’s all a game of chicken between the team and the state. Maybe it isn’t. Regardless, the next few months with determine the franchise’s future -- or lack thereof -- in Minnesota.
It could be an ending suited for Hollywood. And the final scene could end up being filmed there.
