After half a season in Carolina, Panthers tight end Jeremy Shockey knows he’s in the place he wants to be for the long haul.

Shockey, who signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Panthers this year, told the Charlotte Observer that he thinks the team is building something great and he’s hoping he’ll be a part of it for years to come.

“You see people grow and you know it’s going to be a special team. You want to be a part of that,” Shockey said. “You were here when new coaches came and developed. You don’t want to be somewhere else because you put so much hard work in and you’ve seen people grow. And the only thing it’s going to do is get better and better.”

Shockey has started all eight games for the Panthers this season and is third on the team with 23 catches for 292 yards. The Panthers’ 1-2 punch of Greg Olsen and Shockey at tight end, complementing the deep threat from Steve Smith, has been a huge part of the development of Cam Newton.

Although the 31-year-old Shockey said there haven’t been any contract talks yet, if it’s up to him he’s not going anywhere.
