AFC North makes a bit of history

Reuters

Heading into Week 10, three AFC North teams had six wins on the season.

If that seems pretty rare, well, it is. It’s the first time that’s happened since the divisions realigned in 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau via ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley.

So how do three teams from the same division all have good records?  They play the NFC West.  Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincinnati are 5-1 against the NFC West, with Cincy’s loss to the 49ers being the only slip-up so far.

Everyone assumes the Bengals will fall off in the second half, but they may only need one win in four games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh to get to ten victories for the season.

Cincy still has St. Louis, Arizona, and Cleveland on the schedule. The Bengals have taken care of bad teams this year, and that trio is bad.

Perhaps the AFC North could send three teams to the playoffs.

  1. Perhaps the AFC North could send three teams to the playoffs.

Why? So their over-inflated won-loss record can ensure 1 and dones?

  2. AFC North is more likely to land three in postseason than the NFC North because of scheduling differences but it’s not because it’s a better division.

No team in the NFC North has lost to a much worse team yet. But AFC North teams have lost to Jacksonville and Denver.

Then there’s the overall point differential. AFC North net points: 116. NFC North net points: 186.

  3. One article about the AFC North and the NFC North fans come out in droves. Feeling neglected, fellas? LOL

As a rule, the Steelers and Ravens only have eyes for each other. All I can say to that is I hope the Steelers remember 2009. The Bengals could easily shock either or both. The AFC North is far from decided.

  4. You could also say “why is the NFC West’s record so bad?” Because they are having to play 3 pretty tough teams in the AFC North.

  5. And yet my beloved Browns are sucking hind tit still .. when will they ever get it right ? very painful to watch them stumble around lost on offense ..getting smacked in the mouth on defense ..painful . very very painful

  6. The AFC North race doesn’t really matter – the Packers are equal-opportunity dominators. They’ll beat whoever shows up in Indianapolis…

  7. The AFC North has played some weak teams, but on the flip side, they have played some tough teams. Yes, The Packers are looking outstanding, but they have played all very weak defenses, and will play all weak defenses the rest of the year. The Top 8 defenses this year all come from the AFC, I hope the guys in the NFC North are taking notes.

  8. Seems like yesterday when those pesky Browns fans were running their chops about how bad they were going to “crush” us (Bengals) when they played us this year. At least they had a little time on top. lol Of course before they actually played a regular season game.

  9. >The Top 8 defenses this year all come from the AFC

According to the NFL, NFC teams are ranked 1, 6, 7 for points per game allowed.

  10. Snarkzilla…. Live much? “According to the NFL, NFC teams are ranked 1, 6, 7 for points per game allowed”, one of which resides in the NFC North, while all four AFCN teams are in the top 12, 3 in the top 5. I think that just made your argument a moot point. Good try though. Considering that the NFC south has a log jam at the top of their division as well, which means only two NFCN teams are making it this year. It will come down to the 2nd place AFCE team and the 3rd place AFCN team, looking like a melee between the Bills, Jets/Patriots, and Bengals/Steelers.

  11. come on NFC North people. take out the Packers and you’re stuck with one bad team and two average teams. take out one of the 3 relevant AFC North and you’re left with two really good teams and the Browns. I’m sorry but your division has nothing on the AFC North.

  12. How the steelers have 6 wins is beyond me. This is usually the point of the season when overrated teams start to unravel though. This is trully a run of the mill football team through and through. Anybody who knows and watches football, with the exception of steeler fans and a few biased talking heads, seems to be able to realize that. I am not joking the least bit when I say the steelers could easily lose 5 of their remaining 7 games.

  13. Everyone likes to talk about the AFC East (or whatever POS division Dallas is in)

Real Football is played in the AFC North.

really?lmao..you have no clue..and what team are you a fan of?and how many steeler games have you actually seen this year..i am sure not as many as you will say you watch.they could easily win 6 of the last 7 games..there Lb core is getting healthy again.they have gone through a lot of injuries this year and still got 6 wins..so where you are coming from or whatever crack pipe you smoke you really need to stay away from it..cause it is turning your brain to scrambled eggs

  15. hahahaaaaa what else would you expect from a putzberg fan? I’m a fan of the BALTIMORE RAVENS. That’s the team that manhandled the steelers 35-7 in week 1 and forced 7 turnovers against your wack offense run by Jeffrey Dahmer. 7 turnovers. That’s almost double what your wack defense has forced the entire season. The entire season. (You have to repeat yourself when you address people of low intelligence so hopefully they might have a better understanding.) THE BALTIMORE RAVENS. That’s the team that just came in to your own house and, well, it was less than a week ago so I’m sure it’s still nice and fresh in your peanut sized brain.
Trust me, I have watched my fair share of steelers football this season and they should have lost to the colts. Have fun losing to the bungles this weekend. I’m sure after that loss you will have some other sorry excuse for why your weak @ss steelers are even further in the rearview.

  16. Oh, look at all the delicious smack talk on this thread. Ben Roethlisberger being compared to sex slayer who ate his victims. References to crack pipes and scrambled brains. That’s how rivals fans should be able to post. Too bad you won’t even let me tell a guy I wouldn’t complain if the Ravens played Blood from a Broken Nose for Roethlisberger in their stadium. But the commenting rules are different for women, aren’t they? Hmmm, what will female execs at NBC say? Stay tuned …

  17. Wow … guess a different shift has taken over moderation for tonight. I might get happy to have the vise off my tongue, but if it’s like yesterday, the truths allowed up tonight will just be yanked down by the day guy tomorrow.

all the offenses in the AFC suck?

cause this day and age where you get fined for tackling, there’s no real such thing as a dominate defense, if you can’t score more than 24 points as an offense these days, then you’re just an awful offensive unit.

  19. @rwjk

you post like you should have adult supervision while on here..the season isnt over yet kiddo..i make no excuses the better team won that day.but remember if things go right both teams could meet in the playoffs again..and that my friend will be a different story, and we know how that has played out for your ravens over the last several years

  20. Is everyone aware that defensive rankings are based on yardage as they should be? Don’t post if you dont know what you’re talking about.

  21. @Deb

you can say what you want.i dont mind.its funny all the steeler and big ben haters can say what they want on here and they let it stay posted but when someone says something back it is wrong..guess the owner of these threads are anti steeler also..
