Jay Cutler has seen a few more specialists about his thumb, and will undergo surgery this week.

The team’s website says, however, that the team is “hopeful” Cutler will be able to return to action before the end of the regular season.

That’s a great sign of encouragement for Bears fans. We don’t think the Bears would throw that estimate out this early unless there was genuine belief inside the organization that Cutler could suit up for a game or two in the regular season.

Now it’s up to Caleb Hanie to keep the Bears afloat with a few wins in the meantime.

In other news, the Bears confirmed a Chicago Sun-Times report that long snapper Pat Mannelly will miss the rest of the season.
