Eagles’ injuries on offense overshadow mess in secondary

Most of the talk in recent days regarding the Eagles has centered on the availability of key offensive players.  But there are a couple of injuries in the defensive secondary that deserve nearly as much attention, especially with Philly hosting Tom Brady and the high-octane Patriots.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer confirms that quarterback Mike Vick (ribs) will miss his second straight game, and that receiver Jeremy Maclin, who is listed as doubtful with shoulder and hamstring injuries, also won’t play.  The good news is that receiver DeSean Jackson is probable with a foot injury, meaning that he’s virtually certain to play.

On defense, however, two of the team’s three Pro Bowl-caliber corners could miss the game.  Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie didn’t play last weekend with a high ankle sprain, and Nnamdi Asomugha went down on Thursday with a knee injury.

Per McLane, Rodgers-Cromartie isn’t expected to play.  If Asomugha can’t go, Brandon Hughes will get the start at right corner, with Asante Samuel starting on the left side in his first game against his former team.

  1. Let’s be honest here, Philly’s secondary has been terrible. If anything, this might be good for Philly. The big names haven’t exactly lived up to expectations in the eagles’ secondary this year.

    Dallas sucks.
Thanks for adding that incredible insight to the conversation.

  3. Well every time New England’s defense loses a player to injury they seem to play better.

But doesn’t it always seem that when a quality team has everything working against them they find a way to put in a quality effort?

No idea who’ll win, but this game will be close. And screw the Giants! It’s a hatred that Iggles and Patriots fan share.

  4. Until the Eagles coaching staff starts using schemes that play to the players strengths it wouldn’t matter if they were healthy. Playing some of the premiere man to man corners in a zone defense all day long is a big part of the eagles problem. Promoting an offensive line coach to defensive coordinator when it’s clear he is learning on the job and unable to make adjustments is another.

  5. This team is a huge bunch of underachievers and the best part is at 4-6 they still think they are a good team. They will probably keep the coaching staff after going 6-10, lose a bunch of free agents, franchise tag Desean and go 7-9 next year and still not blow this mess up…Eagles just suck!

Please don’t start playing the “injury card”. Every team has injuries…nobody is feeling sorry for the Eagles.

  7. The Eagles may not be that good but there entertaining to watch…alot better than that horror show in Denver..

  8. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie hasn’t been a Pro-Bowl level cornerback in years.

He’s one of the worst CBs in the league at this point.

  9. Hanson is better than DRC in the slot anyway, Asomugha has been ok but if Hughes plays a decent game I don’t think it’s gonna make all that much difference.

  10. Oh don’t give me that injury bug crap.

Pats are not dressing their starting CB, their best safety, their starting middle linebacker, their backup middle linebacker, their starting “backup” center.

Not only that, their star studded reciever Ocho is also not dressed………well in this case it’s actually a good thing.

  11. Watching NFL Matchup…they think eagles / pats is a bigger game than saints / giants. I disagree…what do you guys think?

  12. A Secondary needs to learn to play as a team. No matter how big or small the names are they all have a role to play and are weakened when big names gamble in hopes of getting on the highlight film.

The Patriots have jettisoned nearly every recognizable name and are playing better than ever.

Its the large egos on Philly that’s been their undoing.

  13. However, DRC checked out after the Cowboy game and NA has hardly been a factor all season, due to the fact that his DC started out the season playing him zone, not his natural scheme. NA has since given up on the season prob. out of frustration. Lots of rumors that players don’t respect the DC and are playing for HC.

  14. Haven’t watched Matchup yet but I would think their reasoning could be that if the Pats can win this one, it makes the NFC East a 2 team race for sure whereas Saints-NYG loser is still in it?
Vick never plays against the Pats. He basically begged out his last chance in 05. Too bad because in that game, the 05 Pats defense gave Schaub his big contract opportunity in Hou. As bad of a passer as Vick was then, he may have had a chance to have a good day.

This is one of the dumbest posts ever made by mankind. This is an underachieving and leaderless team. Philly fans are just plain dumb.

  16. I’ll pay attention to the Eagles when the string together more than 2 wins in a row, something they’ve done ONCE this season.

No other sub .500 team gets this much ink, it’s ridiculous.

And that guy is representative of every single fan in Philadelphia. Where do you rate yourself on this intelligence scale?

Hey Gesuk…….just so you know…….there is never an inappropriate time to say…..DALLAS SUCKS!!”

How about when your joke of a team is looking up at Dallas in the division standings? I guess games against Dallas are what Philly fans have to hang their hat on since they have no clue what a Super Bowl win feels like.
