Bill Belichick annoyed with “garbage” questions about Colts

AP

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was not happy when reporters suggested that his team has an easy game on Sunday against the Colts.

“There’s 16 games on the schedule and they’re all the same,” Belichick said, via the Boston Herald. “It’s our team versus that team that week. And we look at tape and learn about our opponent, scout them, and pick up tendencies. But how we match up against that team that day is all that matters. The rest of it, it’s a bunch of garbage. You guys can write about it all you want, it doesn’t matter. But, the winner of this game will be determined by which team plays better on Sunday, not what happened four weeks ago. And I know this is a news story, it’s like this every week. Every week.”

Reporters who pointed out that the Colts are 0-11 heard Belichick say what he’s probably saying to his players: They need to be focused on doing their jobs, not looking at how the Colts have played so far this year.

“What difference does it make? How somebody played two weeks go against somebody else,” Belichick said. “I mean, who cares? Us or anybody else. It doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is how we and the Colts perform against each on Sunday. That’s all that matters. Who cares who won three weeks ago in some game with some other players? It doesn’t matter.”

For the record, three weeks ago the Patriots went to New York and pounded the Jets, while the Colts got whipped at home by the Jaguars. Surely, that tells us a little bit about the Patriots and the Colts, doesn’t it?

Not according to Belichick, who said he’s focused only on the game ahead. When one reporter started telling him that he wouldn’t be able to judge his team based on how they play against a bad opponent like the Colts, Belichick got upset.

“I don’t agree with that,” Belichick said. “So, you can go ahead on your soliloquy about that, but I just don’t agree with that. You don’t think you can gauge a team based on how a player blocks Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis? I mean, who else would you gauge it against? What? Are you kidding me? Covering Reggie Wayne, [Austin] Collie, and [Pierre] Garcon — you don’t think you can gauge your coverage based on those players? I don’t care what their record is. You don’t think there’s better receivers around than them? Better pass rushers than Freeney and Mathis? I mean, I’m not sure what games you’re watching here.”

  1. Is it just me or is Belichick more open within the past week or so. Not his usual tight-lipped self. I mean, I’m not saying he’s being incredibly candid, but he’s giving noticably more information on answering questions than generic stock answers.

  2. Spygate … Bill Belichick cheats … blah blah blah . . .

Just taking care of that for all you haters out there.

  3. I don’t see how there could have been any other possible outcome to those questions. The reporters are just trying to get under Bill’s skin.

What is he supposed to say. ” ya your right. This game this week is a waste of jet fuel for Indy. They should just stay home. ”

Asking questions that they already know the answers to.

  4. Well, he’s right. All these playoff scenarios and whether a team is 0-11 or 11-0, fantasy points, none of it matters. You play who you play every week. You take it seriously. You do your job.

All that other BS is for bored reporters and fans who think the NFL is a video game.

  5. Bill Belichick will always give credit to his opponent, and be sure his players don’t make the mistake of underestimating a team. Stupid reporters for making the mistake of trying to get Belichick to say something he never has said in the history of him being a coach.

  6. wow… some reporter must have really p!ssed off hoody…

“Thirty-seven points on the best defense in the league, s— my d—,”

bets coach ever! minimum fuss… max performance… could make an ad for an engine oil!

  7. “It’s our team versus that team that week. And we look at tape (that we illegally recorded of them) and learn about our opponent, scout them, and pick up tendencies. Oops, did I just say that out loud?”

  8. He’s right. Plus the Colts can probably still get Luck even if they beat the Pats, so they may actually try this week.

  9. Belichick says:

“It’s our team versus that team that week. And we look at tape and learn about our opponent, scout them, and pick up tendencies. But how we match up against that team that day is all that matters.”

He forgot to mention they also watch tape of the opponents practice in preparation for the upcoming game against the Pats.

  10. I am not a Belichick fan, but the last paragraph explains why Belichick has been so successful. The Colts are 0-11, but he remembers the guys who have gotten to him before.

  11. He’s right. The Colts have padded their “lead” for the 1st draft pick, so you never know when they might stop tanking.

In defense of the questioners, though, at this point it is hard to ignore that the Colts have a deep committment to actually throw games with suspect roster moves, phantom injuries, lack of any attempt to use the waiver wire, lack of trades before the deadline, lack of effort to seek out low-cost available free agents, and of course the willingness to have Caldwell keep “coaching”.

  12. Well Bill, we’re tired of the garbage answers you give in your press conferences. Past performance is demonstrably a predictor of future performance, so yes, how a team played three weeks ago against other players does matter. Stop feeding us BS.

  13. Bill’s right. I’ll bet the Saints thought it would be an easy game against the Rams.

  14. Bill knows that his players read and watch all of these pressers, so it should surprise no one that he’s staying on-message.

Seriously, this is what makes Belichick Belichick. Let’s not pretend that we’re just now seeing this for the first time.

When it comes to Bill, the press conference is just another obstacle to overcome on the path to victory.

  15. The Patriots are the Colts’ archnemesis. The Colts haven’t cared about lots of the games this year, but they will care about this one. Not saying it will be too close, but the Patriots will get the Colts’ best game.

Belechick and Brady can say all they want, but it will be hard for the Patriots not to over look them with a spread over 20.

  16. The better question would be,

“Bill, your team is favored by 21 pts. Do you think you’ll cover that spread?”

  17. Anyone who thinks the Colts have schemed to throw games with the roster they have is simply not very bright.

  18. “Bill’s right. I’ll bet the Saints thought it would be an easy game against the Rams.”

The difference is, the Rams were playing at home. In the NFL, never underestimate the home dog.

The Pats are playing at home and will destroy the Colts. It should be over by the end of the 1st quarter.

  19. He knows all too well that any team can beat any other team on any given day in the NFL. One bad break is all it takes. One player getting hot is all it takes. Look at the Rams and Saints this year, the Packers and Lions last year, on and on.

  20. The last paragraph was entirely accurate and a partial explanation of why Belichick has been so successful as a NFL coach. And I’m a Saints fan, who thought the Rams would be a cakewalk (oh, and the Seahawks in the playoffs, too). They were not.

The reason why Michael David Smith, and the guys who asked Belichick this question, are a sports reporters, while Belichick is a successful NFL coach is precisely this difference in mentality. Though I can’t really blame the reporters, they and the coaches have entirely different duties.

The reporter is supposed to give information and, just as importantly, scratch the anxious itch fans have in anticipation of an upcoming game. That’s why “picks” are so important. A coach’s job isn’t to speculate, but to go out there and deliver.

  21. He would be a fool to overlook anyone. I’m sure he’s felt his team has made similar mistakes in the past, overlooking an “easy” game that ends up looking more like a trap later. Besides, the Pats aren’t so far ahead of the rest of their division that they can breathe easy any week. He’s not my favorite coach in the world, but credit where it is due… the man knows what he’s talking about.

  23. Is it just me or is this cheater an old crankshaft curmudgeon of a coach?
    Isn’t this guy ever happy?
Well, cheaters are always afraid of getting caught.
    That could explain his demeanor.

  24. If I were a reporter, trying to piss Coach B. off, I would have said, “if it not that important how teams played 3 or 4 weeks ago, why watch tape” (tendencies). But just to piss him off! Lol! Or why does Josh McDaniels suck so bad? Or is it better to study tape, or their practices? But in all seriousness, Bellichek is one of the best ever! I just would like to see him have a Mora moment! PLAYOFFS!

  25. Belichick is right. The Colts have some pretty good players that can be one-on-one matchup problems. So, the obvious follow-up question should have been: “Coach, since the Colts have some good talent at key positions, do you think their record is a reflection of bad QB play, bad coaching, or some combination?”

My point being, even with the QB issues the Colts have had this season, they have enough talent on their roster to win some games. As a result, I put the blame squarely on the coaching staff. They need to go. And not just the defensive coordinator. Caldwell on down, it all needs to go. Bring back Manning for a year or two to win under a new coaching regime and let Luck learn under that regime for a year or so before he takes the reins.

  26. The Colts are an embarrassment this year. They are not competitive and should be stripped of the first pick on account of the obvious mockery.

I absolutely do not think there should be a draft lottery, but I do think an 0-11 team ought to be thoroughly investigated. But, I think there’s a chance Orlovsky will help the Colts win a game just because he can’t stand the stigma of QB’ing two winless teams.

  27. Coach Belichick’s getting ticked off is understandable. The questions were garbage. He is also very well aware that if any game were the typical “trap game,” it would be this Sunday’s game. He just wanted to send a message to his team to NOT overlook the Colts. After all, they still have very talented players on offense (Clark, Wayne), and on defense (Freeney, Mathis) that could give the Pats problems.

  28. if the colts went into foxboro and beat the pats, i would say it would be up their with biggest upsets in nfl history.

i believe the pats are 22 pt favorites as of now. i remember in 07 when my fins went into foxboro vs that undefeated regular season pats team, the fins were 1-13, and the spread wasnt even that high.

their is no shot this team which is so lifeless goes into foxboro and wins. zero. i would love for it to happen, but it wont, and its not because the pats are a unbeatable team, its because this 2011 colt team prob will go down as the worst team in nfl history.

its nice that bill likes to play nice to his opponents during the week and talk them up, but just say it bill, they are god damn awful, no need to lie. speak the truth.

  29. A coach like Mike Tomlin gives some of the best press conferences out there. While he may not give good sound bites like a Rex Ryan or Bill Parcells, he also doesnt give “GARBAGE” non answers like Belichick, and yet certain reporters continually treats Tomlin like hes the enemy because he uses phrases like “concussion like symptoms”

Maybe Tomlin uses these phrases because he is not a Dr. and thats why he wont specualte on a players injury. Its not what some want to hear, but that deosnt mean Tomlin is hiding something.

I know reporters want coaches to tell them everything and they want to get the big scoop on other sports reporters, or networks, but please recognize the difference between someone like Belichicks non answers and Tomlin refusing to use the phrase YOU want, and get up off Tomlins back.

By the way I’m not saying Belichicks a bad coach. Far from that. He is a great coach, and has his style as does Tomlin or Rex Ryan. But there does seem to be a bias towards treating Tomlin as if hes a bad coach. You never see reporters attack Belichicks non answer press conference’s the way they attack Tomlins.

  30. This guy is the definition of creep. Bellacheater should have been banned form coaching along time ago. What he did was 1000 times worse than Pete Rose’s stuff. But when the commiissioner is a big Pats fan, you skate by. The Patriots are the still the only franchise in NFL history to admit to cheating. They are a disgrace to sports. Their Super Bowl titles are tainted forever!

Tomlin is an outstanding coach as is Belichick, and Ryan is…well he’s Ryan.
Reporters use to attack Belchicks non answers until they figured out that all they were going to get was stock answers no matter what. And frankly I see nothing wrong with BB’s responses to dumb ass questions from a lot of reporters who have never stepped on a football field with anything other than paper and pencil.

  32. Im a Colts fan so I’m naturally a Patriots hater but Bellicheck is friggin genius. Maybe the best ever. I guess we’ll see once Tom Bieber has to retire

Goodell is such a big Pats’ fan that he fined the crap out of them and took away a 1st round draft pick for disobeying a league memo reminding all 32 teams that video taping from the side lines was not allowed.

How many teams has Goodell allowed the owners to have major interests in organized gambling, contrary to league rules and guidelines?

I hate the Patriots. But you, sir, are clinically insane.

  38. I’m not a fan of his but he’s absolutely right. The NFL isn’t Not For Long for a reason. Starter this week, cut next week if you don’t perform, period. Really, that’s the beauty of the league, and the reason nobody really gives a crap about the NBA/NHL/MLB.

  39. The Colts are dangerous.

They’ve locked up the #1 pick even if they should beat the Patriots.

They’ve been far too obvious about tanking games – so much so that there’s talk of a draft lottery, prompting Polian to fire the Colts DC.

Look for the Colts to work as hard at winning this week as they’ve worked at losing in past weeks.

They can “afford” one win this season, and if they had to pick the one team they’d like to beat, it would be the Patriots.

He also knows that on any given Sunday, ANY team can lose, regardless of their winning record. You can NEVER underestimate your opponent and their talents. In fact, that team with the poor record usually has something to prove. I am positive he has drilled that into his players on the first day of practice this week and will continue to do so up to and during the game. These people/reporters obviously do not know Bill. See, I don’t think he got angry at all. I think he just stated the facts plain and simple.

    __
    WRONG

The rule regarding taping had been in place in the NFL Bylaws for at least 20 years prior to 2006, when the NFL issued the memo that specifically reiterated that rule. On top of that, the Pats were punished for all of the taping that happened since at least 2002 (and they admitted that they had been taping since 2000, when Belichick first got there).

So, YES, the rule DID exist during the Super Bowl years.

  48. ^ Living in the past I see.

I don’t understand what folks would like Belliman to say…ah geesh, we are playing chumps this week, so we are going to practice nerf ball in prep for this game…

It is unfair to the Colts to dismiss the team out of hand. Mr. B was respectful of his opponent. That crass reporter should get an upside to the head.

  49. No other team admitted to cheating? How about the Steelers roiding up and winning 4 titles in the 70’s? Or the Niners and Broncos cheating the salary cap on the way to championships? Or how about a coach like Dick Vermeil saying what the Patriots did was no big deal, and he had seen a lot worse from other teams? Or Herm Edwards actually waving to the Patriots camera on one of those silly spygate tapes? Or Jimmy Johnson admitting that he did the same thing and it was no big deal. Or even Bill Cowher saying that wristbands protected against things like that (the same coach who should hold the biggest grudge, as he lost to the Patriots twice in AFCCG;s).

And for the 80th time, the Patriots did not tape practices or the Rams walkthrough, look it up. Besides, let’s look at the “big advantage” spygate gave. The Patriots taped defensive signals. That means, their offense should be doing, well, what it has been doing since 2007 WITHOUT that “big advantage”. Yet, in their nine playoff wins, they scored 16, 24, 20, 17, 24, 32, 20, 41, 24. Plus many of those points came off special teams and defensive touchdowns. Look at the 2001 playoff run. The Patriots scored THREE offensive touchdowns in 3 games. Bledsoe threw for 100 yards against the Steelers. Brady threw for 140 against the Rams.

Yep, all because they knew all those magical signals. So, we have a team that really did nothing offensively despite, according to the fools around here, having all the calls. We have other coaches who said it was no big deal. We’ve even got guys on the spygate tapes who were waving. There was no Rams walkthrough or opposing teams practice tape (no matter how much you repeat it).

So, why do I still have to deal with this 5 years after the fact, with the Patriots currently at 8-3? Yep, they just keep winning.

    WRONG

The memo was issued to CLARIFY the league’s interpretation of the bylaw.

The bylaw states – “Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”

Even Walsh admitted the tapes were never viewed during the games.

Whereas the memo stated -“Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.”

It was the memo that mentioned the sideline, accessibility rather than use, and taping of signals, not the bylaw.

So, NO, the rule DIDN’T exist during the Super Bowl years. Dumbass.

“rc33 being a prime example of a typical New England sports fan who has no other life outside of the Internet blogs and sports boards.”

    ———————————————————-

LOL at you for being the person who actually posted such a statement. Thanks for the laughs! Need them now that winter is starting to roll around here in Pittsburgh. (So, yeah, not all NE fans are the ones that post down on your comments. I think fans of every team can agree you’re an idiot).

    __
As I can find fans of any team who would agree that you are an even bigger idiot. The difference is that I don’t care what you or others think…while all I have to do is post something about teams with big crybaby fan bases like the Pats and watch the “thumbs down” (which stands for someone crying about what I’ve just posted) numbers rise. I’ll refrain from attacking your team though, since Big Ben gets enough crap from Ravens fans as it is. No need to pile on in that regard.

    unmitigated.
Creepy Bozo learned a new word today.

And I live in Texas and always have.

So pathetic that you are a Texan. Figures though…all hat and no cattle.

Dumbass.

The Bylaw IS the rule, moron. The memo was sent out as a reminder. And the Bylaw (aka: the rule) was approved by the NFL in February 1970, so YES it did exist during the Super Bowl years.

Funny how you cling to the “official” rule of the NFL but ignore the “official” conclusion of the NFL that “no competitive advantage was gained”.

Looks like the only cheater in this debate is YOU.

The Spygate cheaters label will hang on your team for ETERNITY. Tough noogies, losers.
