Florio broke a little college football news last night when he reported that Saints wide receiver coach Curtis Johnson will be leaving the Saints to take over the Tulane University head coaching job.
Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed the news on Monday, and said Johnson will stay at his current position through the Saints regular season and the playoffs.
“I don’t know how many good decisions Tulane football has made in last ten years. Matt Forte was one of them. This hiring of [Johnson] will be another,” Payton said via Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Payton is right. I was at the school when Shaun King helped pull off a pre-BCS undefeated season in 1998. The school’s response when Tommy Bowden left for Clemson was to reject then Tulane offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez’s bid for Tulane’s top job. For Chris Scelfo. Tulane has stunk since.
"[Johnson’s] got that ‘it.’ He lights up a room when he walks in,” Payton said, mentioning that Johnson recruited Marshall Faulk and Ed Reed in college.
