Terrell Owens again accused of failing to pay child support

AP

Terrell Owens once again stands accused of failing to pay his child support.

A petition for contempt filed Friday in Georgia says Owens has not made his $5,000 monthly payment for December to Melanie Paige Smith, the mother of one of his children, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. This is the third time in the past six months that a petition for contempt has been brought against Owens for failing to pay child support; he has previously caught up on his payments after the contempt petitions were brought.

In a separate case, Owens failed to show up to a child support hearing in California in October.

Owens, who wants to get back into the NFL but so far has no offers, appears to be having financial problems. He recently sued an attorney for encouraging him to invest $2 million in a bingo hall, and he broke down crying on his reality show when discussing his financial situation.

  1. Child Support Enforcement Agencies are not the easiest people to deal with. You are definitely guilty until proven otherwise. With that said, support your kids – and not just financially.

  2. It’s only Dec 10 and she already has a petition filed…sounds like someone’s mad a T.O…….

  3. I don’t care how much you make, $5k is a ridiculous payment to a baby mama.

ESPECIALLY seeing as there’s no accountability for where that money goes.

  4. All those millions and he can’t pay child support.

    Nice.

    There’s no defending this lunatic.

  5. I am pretty sure they cover situations like this at the rookie symposium….someone was too busy checking out the waitresses when they talkied about women issues

  6. think of how rich and happy he would have been had he not been such a tool in Philly. He would be set.

  7. 1. He doesnt have the money
    2. He has to go in and get the payment reduced
3.He should have established a better relationship with the mom’s and especially the kids.
    4. The mother should work.
    5. T.O. is about to feel the pain.

  8. $5000 may be a lot to pay to a baby momma, but it’s not like they just invented rubbers yesterday… you would think after the first one he would’ve learned to rap up.

  9. Stubbyjones, if you had to pay 5000 a month on child support, you’d be a deadbeat dad too, huh? he’s definitely guilty of being stupid. A bingo hall? 2 million? LMAO

It’s all relative, the kids are used to a lifestyle based on yearly income, that’s what the child support is based on.

If those kids are raised in a 10 million per year lifestyle, is it fair to them to all of a sudden be in a 50,000 per year lifestyle?

If you don’t like it, learn from it, and use a glove.

You do realize that it most states, child support is based upon the income of the non custodial parent right? The judge just doesn’t pick a number out of a hat and say……Pay this much…But then again instead of calling her his “baby mama”, as if to avoid all responsibility as a father in raising a child, why not call TO “the childs Father”…

  12. I’m with “blackqbwhiterb”. Only the 9th of the month and someone needed to enter this into the courts already? That doesn’t excuse not paying a legal obligation, but jeez…..

  13. Drew Rosenhaus is the world’s greatest agent while you’re still a professional athlete.

But as you can see, once that retirement time comes…. And you never had any one to tell you to save this, or save that. Every one is calling you a “baller” including your agent.

    You end up flat broke.

Totally! Besides I highly doubt if her vagina is worth that kind of money.

  15. I love all the “typical” and “support your kids” comments. not one of you could afford 5K a month. you probably don’t even make 5k a month. Its ridiculous. He’s no longer gainfully employed, because like every athlete, when you get old you get discarded. but yet his child support payments are set based off what he used to make 2-3 years ago. its ridiculousness and unfair. was he irresponsible? yes, but he was probably also trapped by this woman. Alot of these athletes get lured in, the woman gets pregnant (intentionally) so that they can treat these athletes like their personal ATM’s. Should they know better, yes, but we are all products of our upbringing and its not like TO had the same family structure most of you had. Guy met his father for the first time when he was in his teens. You know how. The guy walked across the street and told him he couldn’t have a crush on his daughter because he was TO’s father and that girl was TO’s half sister. yes his father lived across the street from him and he never knew and his father never took the time to even acknowledge him. Does it justify being a dick? no. but that would F anyone up. I don’t care who you are.

  16. I’m not a T.O. fan (at all), but having to pay child support to a woman you were never married to is just crap. Any woman who would do this falls squarely into the “gold digger” category…

  17. Terrell has obviously made some poor choices, but why do I get the feeling people his whole life have taken advantage of him?

5K a month for child support? Child support is supposed to be 1/2 the child’s expenses. I’d love to see how she’s spending 10k a month to raise 1 kid. No way in hell I’d ever pay it.

She’s obviously only in it for the money. If he were smart, he’d pony up something like $120k for complete custody and have her forefeit all parental rights. Guarantee she takes the money.

  18. Once again it couldn’t happen to a better guy. No wonder the guys trying to OD 5 grand a month…good god!

  19. Personal foul.

    Unnecessary roughness.

    Everyone here penalized 15 yards.

The guy’s got problems. Hope he can sort it out.

  20. A Vasectomy can be had for the price of a ticket to an NFL game (plus 3 beers). And let’s face it, football fans who are thinking you are twice as smart as TO, the world will do just fine without your dumb a$$ mistakes, and the public assistance costs involved. No one cares about your child support problems.

  21. TO should start fishing around on all the dating sites for a wealthy, fat, ugly widow who wants the services (wink wink) of a TO type.

  22. $5,000 per month for 1 kid? Highway robbery. His lawyer needs to have that adjusted now that he has no income. Not the same lawyer who had him drop $2M in a bingo hall though.

  23. The above commenter says that a man shouldn’t have to pay child support to the women if they weren’t married?? Um, yeah so men can just make babies with whomever they want and have no financial responsibility for them if they were never married?? Yea, that makes a lot of sense….sounds like a great plan.

  24. This is one of the many reasons why Houston did not bring him in. They need another WR bad, but they were better off not “bringing the circus to town.” That includes Favre, too. Good non-moves, Texans…

  25. Not including endorsements, TO has made $55,407,145.00 in his football career. Let’s calculate this. For one child, at $5000/month, that equates to just over one million dollars over 18 years. Now I don’t know how many kids he has, I’m sure he doesn’t either. But on his football salary alone he’s made enough to support 55 kids until they turn 18 at 5 grand a month. Now when you factor in the millions he made in endorsements, reality TV, ect, I don’t feel sorry for this one brain cell dude a bit.

  26. I have an easy solution to this problem. Every state has a “Most Wanted” type list on it’s Child Support/DSHS website. They show the picture of the delinquent father or mother and exactly how much they owe in child support. Put TO’s picture up there with how much he owes. The one thing TO cherishes more than anything is his public image. (FB blogs don’t count) He’ll have a cashiers check to her within 24 hours.

  27. The obligatory “X amount of dollars is too much to pay in child support” deep thinkers chiming in again.

Ask yourselves a simple question. How many illegitimate children would guys like TO rack up during their playing days if their support payments were minimal? Instead of ACromartie and Travis Henry being the outliers, you would see guys with dozens of open cases.

  28. @thrillomania….

C’mon. You’re making excuses for this guy. A guy who continues to blame everyone else for HIS issues.

The 5k a month was based upon an amount he was making at that time this went before a judge. 5k when you’re making 25 mill is not ridiculous. If he can no longer afford that because his financial situation has changed, he can petition the court to lower it-but last I checked-he didn’t even show up for the court date and he has not filed any papers to do so. That’s on him.
Yes, there are women out there who will trap a guy like TO-but last I checked- there was this thing called choice. He had the choice to do one of two things. Either not sleep with her or put a glove on. He apparently chose neither. Don’t tell me she beat him into submission of her trap. Again, squarely on TO.
And as far as his Family situation goes, so what. No one is the effin’ Brady Bunch. We all have something in our family lives that effects us but to continually use that as an excuse into adulthood is pathetic. You get to an age where you know right from wrong. He has enough money, he could pay to speak to someone about his issues if his head is screwed up. My Dad wasn’t always around, but instead of using that as an excuse in my life, I used it as a strength-a positive. I learned from that. TO continues to make excuses and blame others. He needs to man up, face his responsibilities, swallow some pride and do whatever it takes to get himself and his kids on the right path. Football is not forever so he should be doing something in the meantime to stay productive instead of waiting for a phone call and feeling sorry for himself. He’s had opportunities and he’s blown them. Time to grow up.

  29. Dallas fan here, just want to stay classy and thank Terrell for all the fun years we had

We’ll just forget about that last season with him that went sour, when we played with free agency like the Eagle did in this past offseason. The fans in the know, know that that season wasn’t all bad because of T.O.

Lot of good memories of long touchdowns and points scored

I enjoyed having you on my team T.O. Good luck, and I hope you find another one when the time is right

    Stay classy everyone

  30. This last agreement with the NFLPA should have contained a clause that 10% of these player’s salary should go into a trust fund that they can’t touch until retired.
And, I could see a youngish player spending all his money foolishly and not saving but man, at 35, 36, 37 – you KNOW your playing days are close to being over. Stash some cash!

  31. I really think this is one issue where the government actually needs to step up and get a grasp on this whole child support thing.

One poster said earlier, that the child was used to this lifestyle, so that’s what TO should pay? Come on buddy, they never were married! How could the child be “used” to it.

The women get a free pass on this, and it’s a joke. Ok, so TO was making a few mil a year playing ball, but now he’s out of work, and still paying 5k a month? why isn’t that adjusted? He’s unemployed, and seeking employment, and can’t find it. Adjust the child support!

This is a joke where they can get 5k a month. I have yet to see realistically where it costs 10k a month to raise a child. Unless this child has some serious medical issues, there’s no way in the world! The federal government should step up, and put a cap on child support.. There’s no way any woman should ever get more than 750 a month for one child. NO way! It doesn’t cost that much to raise a child… At 5k a month, TO is buying her a damn nice car, house, boat, probably a boob job, and her vag has been to the body shop to get all of the dents taken out, so its like a new car again! It’s ridiculous!

  32. He’s an easy target for sure, and most of it is his own making. Unfortunately he clearly suffers from mental and emotional issues that are well beyond his ability to deal with.

    Hopefully he gets some help.

  33. listen, this dude made MILLIONS during his time, and now he can’t come up with 5k for HIS kid? give me a break, he wasted large amounts of money on God knows what, so if he can buy cars and travel around and whatever than he can pay for his child, its that simple

  34. The payment never gets adjusted based on the *current* income of the father, and when that goes down it turns into a downward spiral. Child support can throw you into debtor’s prison. Athletes, actors (see Dave Foley), and the guy who set himself on fire in New Hampshire have all been caught up in the broken system. It’s horrible for both the father and the mother and children, who may wind up homeless because ironically the child support payment is unsustainable.

  35. That 5k a month is for one child he has four kids and 62k a month total in child support payments.

  36. I am a Texans fan and I would rather have Terrell Owens and his child support issues on the team than nice guys Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones, Bryant Johnson and Derrick Mason because Terrell Owens can still play at a high level and he is a better wide reciever than those four guys. Terrell can catch the ball, break tackles for yards after catch and catch deep passes every game. Terrell is consistent every week unlike those four guys on the roster. His on field production is what I am making my decision on. As, I am smart enough to know that if he makes 250K per week for each week for the rest of the season, deduct taxes and then he can write her a check for 30K for 6 months of child support until his lawyer can get that ridiculous amount reduced. She needs to bring reciepts to verify that money is being used for the child and not the mother’s cars and wardrobe. There are other guys on the Texans and other professional teams you cheer for who owe child support and have worst problems, the difference is they do not draw the attention or headlines like Terrell Owens. I want the team I am a fan of to pick up anyone that I see makes them better and Terrell Owens does that as the Texans need a wide reciever with/without Andre Johnson. How can people celebrate a woman getting 5k a month in child support when they know first hand they do not spend 5k a month to raise their own child?

  37. Maybe T.O. should get his begging bowl out and see if Jeff Garcia will make him a $5,000 loan to cover his past due obligation. I’m sure that Jeff is a forgiving person for T. O. “outing” him. Besides, Jeff has a job and this dude is broke.

The real tragedy is the likelihood that this deadbeat dad, like so many other fathers of illegitimate children, and will abandon them. This happened to T.O. and the cycle will likely continue..

  38. 800/month daycare, 500/month food, 1500-2000/month rent or mortgage, 80/month life insurance, 150/diapers/formula, plus clothes, travel. Yeah 5,000 is nothing, chump getting off easy!

  39. “I am a Texans fan and I would rather have Terrell Owens and his child support issues on the team than nice guys…” Dalucks

Good to know where your priorities are. Thanks for sharing.

  40. Please do not quote anything I post unless you quote the entire paragraph.
Lets stop kidding yourselves, fans do not care about athletes personal affairs. Fans only care about whether or not he helped the team win the game. I only speak the harshest reality of sports.
I am a fan of Terrell Owens bacause he is a hall of fame player who can still play football at a high level and help a team win. I do not support him not paying child support as I also do not support a woman who do not work asking for more money to raise a child. There are alot of details this story did not include that will determine whether or not Terrell Owens should pay more child support. But raising a child is a 50/50 split so if Terrell Owens needs to pay 5k a month to raise the child, is the mother required to do the same?

  41. JerryKill4Pres…

TO has to petition the court to reduce his payments, but he didn’t even show up to court. Does he think everything will either go away if he ignores it or magically work out in his favor without him explaining why things need to change?

    —————————————————-

You’re kidding, right? Did you forget the “workout day” he and his agent set up? Those who went said TO couldn’t run a single route without getting winded. All the other players you mentioned on the Texans could do that easily.

  43. Absolutely not Carlsbadboltfan. Let me give you some facts. Terrell Owens had knee surgery 8 months ago and his workout was 7 weeks ago. Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones, Bryant Johnson and Derrick Mason have all been through training camp and have played every game this season so they should be in good cardio shape but at this point, I am sure Terrell Owens is also.
I am not questioning cardio, I am talking about on field production. Andre Johnson has missed 6 games and 3 quarters for the Texans and he has 31 receptions this season. Kevin Walter has played in 12 games and has 28 receptions while Jacoby Jones has 25 receptions in 12 games. Bryant Johnson and Derrick Mason has combined for 9 receptions. These numbers are pitiful based on the games and oppurtunity these guys have played this season.
Terrell Owens gives the Texans a deep threat to stretch the field, the ability to break tackles and create big plays along with keeping eight man fronts from slowing down our running game. He is already familiar with the west coast offense from his time in San fran and Phila. This is why I said, I would rather have a productive wide reciever with personal issues than a non productive nice guy.

  44. Reading the comments on here it seems unanimous that he is a deadbeat, idiot, not capable of making good decisions. When does the woman in the situation get held accountable. I think everyone will agree life is not fair. Tell the kid sorry your dad is a deadbeat and everyone knows it. Except apparently your mom. If you want to point fingers at why your life suck, start with her. If it wasn’t rape she holds more responsibility than he does. She should have said NO your a deadbeat.

  45. MAN, T.O.!!! I’m still routing for you. 5k a month is ridiculous, hopefully he is making money somehow. Imagine if T.O. just had fun while playing, might still be in SF with a chance to catch the G.O.A.T. #80 Jerry Rice.

  46. The ex should have been saving this for a rainy day rather than spending it all. Getting your child support adjusted isn’t easy. The entire court system is set against the men from the beginning to end of the proceedings.

Even if TO had wanted to take custody he wouldn’t be able to. Th courts would rather have the mother bleed him dry.

    =================================

Right. Because I was saying that TO shouldn’t have to fulfill his responsibilities as a father. That was the point of my post. /total freaking sarc

My point is that on no planet does it cost $5000 to raise a kid, much less the $10000 the court is implying it takes (you know, HALF?). As a father of TWO children, I can tell you that my wife and I make WAY less than $10,000 a month, and we live happily with both of our children in private schools. It shouldn’t be about income, it should be about the child’s needs. Instead, you have a system where his baby mama (that’s what she IS, afterall) is making $60,000 a year doing nothing more than what is expected of any other mother out there.

You’re attempts to turn my comments into some misogynistic, chauvinist point of view hold no water here. On no planet should ANYONE have to hand $5,000 a month to someone else with no accountability whatsoever for that money.

Let me ask you this: If you knew for a fact that this woman was going out and buying plastic surgery, hitting the bars every night, and making more baby daddies, while her child never saw a dime, would you be so quick to defend her? Well, guess what? You can’t say she ISN’T doing that because there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY.
