Bears’ Sam Hurd arrested on federal cocaine charges

Bears receiver Sam Hurd has been arrested on federal drug charges.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the arrest took place in Chicago but relates to an attempt to purchase drugs from a supplier in North Texas, and that a Texas-based office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is handling the investigation. Hurd played for the Cowboys from 2006 to 2010.

Hurd has played in 12 games for the Bears this season, mostly on special teams. On offense he has eight catches for 109 yards.

The criminal complaint accuses Hurd of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

The Bears released the following statement on the situation: “We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it. We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information.”

  1. I wonder how much he tried to buy??? Had to be a lot! I dont get when athletes still delve into nafarious activity..

  2. He should be suspended multip….wait he’s not a Lion. He should be good to go for Sunday. Little slap on the wrist will teach him.

  3. WTF!? If he is stupid enough to do this he deserves anything he gets.

If i had the opportunity to play in the NFL there is no way on hell i’m risking that to pick up drugs in TExas.

  4. So I make close to a million dollars a year, why not sell some coke on the side? Why can’t these kids leave the troubled past behind them and move on when they get this kind of money!!!!!

  5. 500 grams of coke….federal charges….this isn’t the kind of thing where the league slaps you on the wrist and you miss four games. This is the kind of thing where the league suspends you for a season after you serve three-to-five in a federal pen….if you’re talented enough that a team still wants you after that.

    Bye Bye Hurdie.

  6. Times really are bad in Chicago when even a Bear can’t engage in a little bit of recreational drug use!

In all seriousness though, Lovie has done a great job of containing his trouble makers compared to a majority of the league.

  7. ftbfan76 What the hell are you talking about? Sure , the cowbowys have had Many drug offenses, but the Bears?
Jerry Angelo should bring in some more Dallas rejects……….

Reset the arrest meter. Another Ex-Cowboys flop.

LOL!! When Pac-Man was a cowboy, his transgression were assigned to the Cowboys, even though they occurred while he was a Titan. Now a Bear gets busted, and it’s because he was an “ex-Cowboy”… you doing your morning stretching??

The Cowboys are probably one of the 5 cleanest teams in the NFL, but you keep churning out that 15 year old nonsense someone told you.

  9. The criminal complaint accuses Hurd of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.”

This isn’t going to end well.

  10. To be precise, the informant said Hurd told him he wanted to buy “five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area” at $25k/kilo for coke and $450/lb for marijuana.

This further illustrates the problems faced with not using the metric system in the US. Homegrown weed is sold in one unit and imported coke in another. We need to get on the metric system to simplify the distrobution process for our hard-working drug dealers!

  11. 100g is not a kilo, whoever said that up there. Get your metric system right. That being said, where does a pro athlete find the time to purchase a pound of coke and try to sell it? Wouldn’t you need a whole network for that? How does his team not know that as soon as he’s done with practice he’s off to the side business?

  12. This is the type of player that the league AND the NFLPA need to make an example of. There should be ZERO tolerance on this kind of stupidity. Issue a joint statement regarding discipline, remove the player from the league until the legal issues are done, and clean up the image of the league and its players.

I get the “innocent until proven guilty” argument but that applies in the court system. Guys get fired all the time for “allegations” or potential involvement in a “scandal” (Sandusky/Paterno among many, many others)

  13. “5 kilos of coke”….

    _________________________

    Um…. it’s a half-kilo.
The metric system is simpler, remember?

  14. The complaint says Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area.

  15. This is going to be a BIG story. It’s one thing for a player to be caught with “personal use” drugs, and unfortunately not all that rare or unprecedented.

It’s entirely another thing to detail to a federal agent your plans to set up a major drug distribution network in Chicago while you are a player in the NFL. This story has legs.

  16. @ reasonsimadrunk says:

    5 kilos of coke.

Re- read, 500 grams= less than 2 ounces which equates to less than an eighth of a pound, which comes to less than 1/20 th of a kilo… yea math…

  17. Since he’s an professional athlete he’ll never see any jail time and he’ll still be getting paid. Whereas, if that was a middle class working man or woman we’d be in the clanker with no job.

Suspend him for the rest of the year with NO PAY!

  18. WOW!!! and in Dallas he always talked about how God was on his side and Jesus was his savior…. Well now Jesus is just the guy he is going to need protection from in the pen!!!

  19. I like that my tax dollars are paying for policemen to be fake drug dealers. Great job guys.

Guy was a fringe player, had to supplement his income somehow. Who cares? Capitalism is what makes America great.

  20. Knowing Bears fans, I’d assume they all believe the Hurd did nothing wrong, Law enforcement in general conspires against the Bears and it was the individual cop that arrested Hurd that screwed them over this week.

  21. Hurd is “only” a multi-thousandaire making $685,000 this year. Although he did get a $1.35 million signing bonus.

Hurd has a family to feed. How’s he going to make it on that chicken feed?

  22. HURD subsequently inquired if the UCA (undercover operative) and the CI (confidential informant involved in the case) could provide him with Mexican cellular telephones, as HURD believed that law enforcement did not have the capability of “listening” to Mexican telephones.

    —-

SMH…does he think that Mexican cellphones get their signals routed through a secure scrambling center affiliated with Telemundo or something?

  23. A pound of blow? Throw in a few bottles of scotch and a a couple hookers and you have a “Charlie Sheen” weekend. He’s just following in the footsteps of the ultimate Cowboy WR…Michael Irvin.

  24. Sam and his distribution “posse” have issued a statement…….Although it seems we are drug runners, we had no intentions of pumping massive amounts of illegal drugs into our community, we simply were trying to sell them to recreational users, as we had no intentions to further poison the communities in which 0ur children are raised, single moms hooked on coke, with 4 or 5 hungry kids were not our goal….Our goal was to make money, drive around with gold rims, with a shiny glock in the waistband, hang out at the club, and be a pillar of the community, but sadly, sam, our financier was arreasted, we refer all questions to his attorney………Thank you and keep it real…

  25. Knowing Bears fans, I’d assume they all believe the Hurd did nothing wrong, Law enforcement in general conspires against the Bears and it was the individual cop that arrested Hurd that screwed them over this week.

Because Texas is where the US border meets Mexico.

    DUH!!!!

  27. And we all thought Jerry Jones had shut down the White House down there in Dallas.

    Guess not!

Got to wonder how long until we hear Michael Irvin’s name in this ordeal….

    IDIOTS….
    a kilo is a 1000 grams = so 500 grams is a half a key…
    a US ounce is 28 grams…

Don’t ask me how I know!!!

SO, sammie boy had about 18 ounces coming to him…. now he’s really got something else coming to him!!!

  30. Rumor has it, the cowboys suck out of prision – just look at whts they always do yeay after year. But with out of any doubt they really do suck behind prison walls.

  31. The criminal complaint accuses Hurd of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

Does anyone know if the person he planned to distribute it to was Michael Irvin?

  32. From the way the charges look, wide receiver WAS his side job and being a drug kingpin was his occupation. One of the things on the tape is his intent to set up a new network now that he was in Chicago. He was also talking about needing another supplier because his Chicago connection wasn’t getting him enough.

This guy is going away for a LONG time!

  33. I can’t wait to see how he’s punished. A Federal Crime by a professional athlete should result in heavy fines, jail time and community service. Althouth we all know he’ll get off easy!

  34. Sam wanted to use Mexican phones so the Feds listening in wouldn’t be able to decipher what was being said due to the heavy accents.

  35. The conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

laguage is just the law he is accused of violating i took a Kilo from the officer and stated he wanted 4 more Kilos according to the complaint filed. it looks like distribution and if so he is in it deep.

  36. This guy might well have made a foolish gamble, and cocaine is certainly not a health-promoting snack choice, but the war on drugs remains an ongoing and enormously expensive disaster that causes more damage to people than the drugs themselves. The government should not be in the business of telling responsible adults what they may and may not ingest.

  37. @garyandersonsleftfoot
    You re-read-
28 grams is approximately 1 ounce
    16 ounces is one pound
2.2 pounds is approximately 1 kilogram
    28×16 is 448 grams in 1 pound.
So it equals 1.12 pounds and about half a kilo.
Just a math nerd I guess.

  38. Hey math geniuses,

The law he broke was intending to distribute 500 g OR MORE of cocaine, mentioned above.

He actually tried to buy 5-10 kilograms of coke, not mentioned in this article. And yes, that is 10-20x the 500g legal limit.

But thanks for the corrections. Really.

  39. Score 670 in Chicago is reporting that their law enforcement source had Hurd as one of the biggest drug dealers in Chicago, and that over 10 other NFL players names came up in this investigation. They described this arrest as “the tip of the iceberg.” This is going to get fun.

  40. Wow, that’s gotta be some decent time given mandatory sentencing rules.

What a dope. Was he actually covered in the coke like Balkie was in “True Romance”.

  41. A kilo is 1000 grams or 2.2 Lbs
there is 16 oz in 1Lb
    28g in one ounce
Hope that clears everything up for you all.

  42. The Bears released the following statement: “We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it. We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information.”

    ———————————————————
    Translation:

“Dude is playing ’till the cell door slams.”

  43. I hope no one here commenting is ever on jury duty. apparently have no comprehension of the legal process. refresher: arrest, charged, indicted, tried, convicted…not the other way around. If you are guilty, you know who I am talking to.

  44. @reasonsimadrunk: So you are telling me that it is LEGAL to have 500 grams of cocaine?????? Somehow I don’t think that is correct.

  45. I realize it’s a federal charge, but man, drug dealing in Texas? I think there are guys eating rats in prison there because they were caught with a pot seed back in 1965.

  46. @condor75

Tell that to the people who always comment about Ben Roethlisberger.

Go ahead and convict him in the court of public opinion, for all I care. Goodell should suspend him though, regardless of a conviction simply because he was accused.

After all, that’s how he operated with Roethlisberger.

  47. Hurd’s customer list as reported by WSCR in Chicago included a “double digit” number of NFL players. Double digits meaning some number between 10-99. I’m sure his list will be of much interest to the league.

Also the amount of drugs he was reputedly selling placed him as one of the top drug dealing businesses in the entire Chicagoland area.

  48. I’m waiting for the “Free Sam” billboard campaign in Chicago. There will also probably be a “pay the man jerry” media blitz. The poor guy had to sling coke just to make ends meet. Pay the man. Have waddle and silvy made up a “funny” song about it yet?

  49. Allegedly he was already dealing up to 4 kilos per week in the Chicago area, but needed more for his customers.
According to the federal complaint, Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. The complaint claims Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.
    What a moron!

  50. 500 grams is not less than two ounces.280 grams is 10 ounces.A pound is448 grams, and a kilo is 2.2lbs.He was snitched off, I guess, do they have wiretaps? Or an informer who needs to cut a deal? That’s a lot of dope per week if stories are true.Nananana, Nananana, HeyHey, Goodbye.

  51. Uh I don’t know what these people who keep saying “suspension” are talking about.

This guy’s career is done. Federal charges on 500 grams of any kind of powder is jail time.

  52. Great. Another clown with too much extra money decides to go Avon Barksdale on the world and set up his own network. Well, nice try but this will NOT end well.

Avon went away for a long, long time, and his partner Stringer got whacked by Omar and The Bowtie.

  53. @johntonioholmes says:

Yeah, it’s not like Ben had a previous history of shady sleaziness or anything.

  54. No big deal, just another NFC North player arrested for some off-the-field transgression or another. But hey, it’s the Lions who have a big discipline problem.

  55. Not that i would know anything like this at any point in my life but…..

    $450 per POUND of marijuana????

    Let’s do some math.

    1 LB = 16 Ounces ->
    4 “quarters” per Ounce

So he was willing to pay a whopping $28 per OUNCE or $7 per quarter?

I realize that he’s buying in bulk, but a pound isn’t enough to warrant that kind of discount.

Shoot, I bet you couldn’t get seriously bad rag-weed for $28 per quarter, let alone an ounce.

    ———————————————————
It is not legal.. Anything more than 500 grams Johnny Law looks at it as “intent to distribute”. Less than 500 grams they just assume you have a Lindsay Lohan problem. Unless its divided out into portions and or have a scale with you at the time of arrest. Then it’s intent all the way.

  57. These last 2 games were hard to take. But damn wasn’t that bad man always next year. Well have fun in the “joint”……. dumbass!!!

  58. Holy Cow, God-del will be busy. Lets see he wants to fine a guy for not talking to press, suspend a guy for late hit, fine a team for allowing a player to go back on the field, fine a guy for shoes he wears….what will this be. Nothing…….. unless he get his cut.

The reason you wouldn’t get that kind of discount is because you aren’t spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on it at a time. This guy was trying to go Tony Montana and got caught red-handed. As for the poster that stated 500 grams of cocaine would be considered “personal” unless it was divvied up, you do realize that is well over a pound of product, don’t you? That is possession with intent to distribute all the way. Hell, Lindsay Lohan and Boy George together couldn’t disco their way through that much in a week!
