Eagles were calling out Jets’ coverages

Give Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and the Philadelphia coaching staff credit.

They were well prepared for Rex Ryan’s excellent pass defense. Safety Eric Smith said the Eagles knew what was coming.

“They’d line up, look at us, look at Vick, and [say, ‘Oh, they’re in Cover Zero’ or ‘They’re in Cover One,'” Smith said via ESPNNewYork.com. “They did a good job of studying, a good job of preparing for the game.”

This is where the loss of safety Jim Leonhard hurts. The Jets said during the week they would simplify their concepts and it clearly hurt them.

Rex Ryan spoke about the problem on Monday.

“It doesn’t generally happen with our defense. We’ll try to change some things,” Ryan said at his press conference.

He’s got five days until the Battle of New York to make his adjustments.

  1. At this point, I think it is entirely possible that the Eagles make the playoffs. I think both things they need help with will both happen (Jets beat Giants next week, Giants beat Cowboys the last week), however, I am not so confident the Eagles will beat Dallas and Washington.

As an Eagles fan, I’m conflicted. On one hand, if they win the division, nothing will change. Even with a 8-8 division title, they will still look at it as a division title. I think they would even bring Casstillo back. I don’t think I want that to happen, long term.

On the other hand, if they are playing like they did yesterday, they can play with anybody. If they get in, the Eagles are the exact type of team that could go on a run and win 4 straight for a title. After all, their first game would be Detroit or Atlanta in Philly. Either way, a dome team playing outside in Janruary.

  2. GO BIRDS !!!! We have the perfect chance to slide into the play offs this teams starting to look like the team we expected, still weak in obvious spots but they’re playing better on offense !!! Vagiants and cowgirls are both finishing 8-8 an we will snake em out !!!!!

  3. @somekat, the Eagles won’t make the playoffs. If the Giants lose next week, they will pack it in and get creamed by Dallas. No chance loses next week and wins against Dallas. Sorry buddy, maybe next year.

  4. I’m a Jets fan and Eric Smith can say whatever he wants. The Jets played terrible football from every aspect and Eric, you aren’t doing too well this year pal so quit pointing the finger.

  5. Very interesting. The same things was being said after the Eagles blewout the Cowboys. As if the Eagles new exactly what play to run every time against the Cowboys Defense.

Both games were at home but hopefully Rob is paying attention because this in now two times the Eagles were able to recognize Defensive coverage against a Ryan defense and no surprise blewout both teams.

It is concerning though how the Eagles are getting this information.

  6. I think the Eagles, perhaps more than any other team were hurt by the lockout. I’d love to see the whole unit, including Castillo, get another shot next year.

Somekat, I’m with you, the Eagles have a legit shot at winning the division, especially because the Giants and Cowboys have pretty much mastered the art of the late-season crumble.

  7. 1. The Jets are overrated garbage every single season. 2. Great to see Sheagles fans getting their hopes up-you ladies ain’t making the postseason,

  8. “Give Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and the Philadelphia coaching staff credit.”

Congrats on giving out over $200 million in contracts and finishing 8-8 at best.

  9. “If they get in, the Eagles are the exact type of team that could go on a run and win 4 straight for a title.”

    Based on exactly what?

  10. “Somekat, I’m with you, the Eagles have a legit shot at winning the division, especially because the Giants and Cowboys have pretty much mastered the art of the late-season crumble.”

That’s pretty rich. All the Eagles have done for 50+ years is crumble. It may come early, it may come late, it may come in the middle, but the point is that it always comes.

  11. The NFl would be a better place without either Ryan. What have they done, other than run their mouths before accomplishing anything. How many times has Rex’s defense given up 30 or more? Does any body realize the Jets have given up more points than the pathetic Pats defense?

  12. What do franchises like the Cowboys and Giants know about winning? Not much when compared to a team w/ a storied history like the Eagles.

  13. Dallas has one win against a team over .500 and they still are fighting to get in the playoffs. So pathetic. Even the horrible eagles have more.

  14. I’m a long termed Eagles Fan, 50 plus years. Recently, “I was banned from their site,” Categorically, “On the Inside,” David Spadaro. I made all the expected overtures to management, J Lurie/ownership & Media Relations. All fell on deaf ears! As a Vietnam Veteran, who has fought for the ideals of this country and free speech, “I was banned for my personal opinions by the “silver spooners” and “Ass kissers.” As you can see by the results of , “Giants, Cowboys & Jets games,” the trouble with this team isn’t talent, it’s psychological. There is no trust as is substantiated by Reids comments, last season and the McNabb retention. How many players are procuring agents such as, “Drew Rosenhaus,” because of the distrust with the F/O and UJ Lurie?

  15. I don’t understand this “Battle of New York” reference. I thought the Giants represent New York City and the Jets represent the cast of “Jersey Shore.”

  16. “Loser pats fans comments”?

    you mean like “Spygate II”?

Can I fire this up? It will be great! On every single Eagles post for the next (not 1, not 2, not 3) but 4 years and counting we can mention Spygate II, and belittle everything the team does.

    Oh, I am so excited.

Either that, or the Jets just suck, and the worlds-smartest-coach Rex Ryan doesn’t know how to disguise an defense.

  17. Everything was fine until the last sentence. It will be the Battle of New Jersey because that is where those two teams play. I don’t care if they do not want to admit it in their team names. . .

  18. “The NFl would be a better place without either Ryan.”

It would be a better place without cheaters, too.

  19. “Dallas has one win against a team over .500 and they still are fighting to get in the playoffs. So pathetic. Even the horrible eagles have more.”

All that means is that the 6-8 Eagles have more losses against crappy teams. Congratulations?

Well, then sir, that would include the Jets. Also the 49ers, Broncos, Cowboys, and Steelers. Or teams with multiple Super Bowls.

  21. Eric Smith lost in a foot race to Brent Celek… embarrassing. A safety slower than a tight end. I’m tired of seeing this guy running behind people about to score on us every week. Wayne Hunter and Vlad Ducasse can’t block, Schotty sucks… they all need to go!
