Braylon Edwards was a healthy scratch Monday

With Ted Ginn injured Monday night against Pittsburgh, the 49ers may need Braylon Edwards again soon. They certainly didn’t need him against the Steelers.

It sounds like Edwards was a healthy scratch for the game.

“We went with the three [receivers],” coach Jim Harbaugh said via Matt Maiocco of “Felt like [Kyle] Williams, Ginn and [Michael Crabtree] gave us the best chance. Then, we also wanted to use Brett [Swain] on special teams. Those were the four we dressed.”

Edwards has struggled with knee injury this year, but he played last week and practiced during the week. He was listed as questionable, but expected to play.

It’s a remarkable statement that he wasn’t even active for a team that could certainly use playmakers.  Edwards has fallen a long way from this time last year, when he thought he’d strike it rich as a free agent.

Ginn sprained his ankle. Early X-rays were negative, but his status for next week is uncertain.

  1. WoW. Mr “Essence of NYC” Edwards career seems to bein jeopardy. Unless he has a ex coach somewhere like Martz did with the bum Roy Williams, I don’t see him playing next year. Now he can be a fulltime man about town.

  2. Braylon Edwards is a D-bag who doesn’t deserve an NFL salary. He sucked in Cleveland, he sucked in NY, and he’s sucking in SF. When will teams finally see the writing on the wall? His worth is GROTESQUELY over-exaggerated.

  3. Why does a team that has Alex Smith as a QB need any WR’s? I’d line up 9 lineman and Frank Gore with him every play.

  4. Edwards has certainly not lived up to being the 3rd pick in the 2005 draft and is a major a-hole. That said, as a Browns fan, he was their best WR since their return in 99. Since he and Winslow were purged by Mangini, the Browns have not had any playmakers that defenses worry about. And they could certainly use them now.

  5. This is one of the more compelling stories right now that no is discussing.

My gut says this is a “quiet” doghouse situation. Braylon hasn’t been getting it done and he hasn’t developed chemistry with Smith. Harbaugh needs to win now.

There is no question Braylon will be used in the playoffs but it’s not a lock he will start. Harbaugh is the man to decide and he will side with the team before any single individual.

  6. It was a funny epic fail by the 4 letter network to have that nice little puff piece on Edwards on their pregame only to announce after it ran that he was a healthy deactivated player. ROFL.

  7. Hoping he gets better, after seeing the report done by Riley on espn last night changed my opinion of him!!!! Has he has donated 1 million for college tuition for those students while also supplying them with computers and school supplies for college, he technically is playing this year for free!

  8. It’s to bad to see someone just not care enough to work on his skill set, and attitude. I remember when he was in college, he was a beast.. Ever since he was drafted, and i think the minute that first paycheck came, he quit. Now he can’t catch a cold, and is always injured. Funny what a little money does to a guys mind.

  9. Its really quite simple.

Braylon isn’t playing because he hasn’t been on the same page as Alex Smith all year and he had been outplayed BADLY by Kyle Williams. Kyle Williams will likely be the #2 WR in the very near future.

  10. Skins could get Braylon and D Jax…With Moss would be a lethal combination…I have to say I am not so sure Anthony Armstrong is a starter. We need proven WRs.

We’ll take them for next year.

  11. @waltdawg

You really don’t want him. Braylon has returned to his “drop every pass” mode that got him traded out of Cleveland and is never in the right spot on any given play.

  12. With Alex Smith playing QB does it really matter if Edwards is out there or not? I mean 3 out of every 5 Alex Smith passes are off target.

Edwards can’t catch anything–including colds, buses and taxis, let alone the football!

Not sure about that – he certainly seems to be catching a lot of flak lately.

Maybe the only thing he can catch at this point.

  14. Edwards could be a great addition to this team, but like Westbrook last year, they don’t give him a chance. They have yet to get him involved early and often in a game.

Smith is like Kolb, he doesn’t like to throw to his best receiver.
