Cliff Avril wants to stay in Detroit, but Lions’ line is getting expensive

AP

Lions defensive end Cliff Avril is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and he says he’s hoping a long-term deal can get done to stay in Detroit.

But the Lions have an awful lot of money tied up in their defensive line right now, and it raises the question of how much money they can afford to give one more defensive lineman.

There’s a lot of money in my position group,” Avril told MLive.com. “I don’t know. It might just be a financial thing. I don’t know. It’s my first time going through free agency, so I don’t really know how this thing works upstairs.”

With Avril’s fellow starting defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch scheduled to make $5 million next season, and starting defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Corey Williams getting $9.25 million and $4.9 million respectively, a huge contract for Avril would give the Lions an extremely expensive defensive line.

But Lions coach Jim Schwartz sounds like he doesn’t think he can afford to lose Avril, who led the team with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles.

“It’s one thing to have double-digit sacks, but Cliff had a little bit more of an impact than just that because of the forced fumbles,” Schwartz said. “That goes hand-in-hand with getting sacks a lot of times, but Cliff has a knack for it. That gave us a big push. We didn’t finish the way we wanted to defensively, but we got a lot of turnovers and Cliff was a big part of that. Cliff was also a guy who was drafted before I got here, but we’ve developed him, he’s developed with us, he’s become a better player every year. He’s added to his arsenal every year and he’s been a hard worker. I think all those things we recognize.”

It sounds like the Lions are ready for the price to go up on their already high-priced defensive line.

  1. Detroit could have something really special if they lock up Avril long term, and also address their secondary in the upcoming draft. I’m really happy that a franchise that was so bad for so long now has a clear direction and could be a solid team for a long time going forward, so I hope they break out the checkbook for Cliff.

  2. The Lions have to restructure multiple contracts on their roster.

I expect Corey Williams to either be cut in order to free up some cap space for Cliff Avril.

By any means the Lions need to resign Avril.

  3. Pay Avril! KVB and Corey Williams will be only be around for another season anyways unless they are willing to play for cheap in 2013.

  4. Avril has said he wants to stay in Detroit and doesn’t need I top 5 type contract. He is a true team player, loves his teammates and believes in what the lions are doing. He’ll be back with a solid long term contract
Also don’t forget if we can give megatron an extension, that will free a ton of cap room, as he is do to make $22 million

  5. That’d be a TERRIBLE mistake to let that guy walk, he’s so underrated !!!

Probably could let go of old good VDB though ….

  6. Megatron, Avril, Tulloch, Hill/Stanton, Cherilus, Hanson, Sammy Lee Hill, Levy, Logan, the list goes on and on. There’s going to be a lot of turnover again…

  7. Not only expensive but utterly overrated – in the biggest game of the year, in a supposed strength-on -strength battle the Lions D-line was completely humiliated and exposed for being the overrated, over-hyped unit they really are.

It’s great they can bully lesser O-lines but matched up with the best interior O-line in the league in the play-offs, they were completely irrelevant.

  8. The Lions could easily free up cap space by trading Matthew Stafford aka “the next Dan Marino”.

Lotsa yards, but never wins in the postseason…buy low, sell high.

  9. Jjjjjjeans-
Yea, good observation, he plays one good game and the defense fails him, and its all his fault. Maybe you should watch him play sometime. Even the thickest of skulls can see his talent

Marino went to a SB last I checked…and I recall just 2 YEARS AGO people were saying the same about Aaron Rodgers, and look at him now. 2 years ago he couldn’t win in the post season, now, we all ask if he can lose in it.

    Sincerely,
    A Lions Fan

  11. NOW, I see Avril signing a decent deal..but top in the top 5 at his position type deal. How many Pro Bowls does he have? Suh draws all the double teams where as say Peppers draws ’em himself. Avril is good, but he doesn’t take advantage of the 1 on 1 like every other #1 would in this league. ALSO, KVB wont be going nowhere and already restructured his contract last season [as did Stafford]. I haven’t seen anything Corey Williams can do that Sammie Lee Hill can’t…only for a LOOT cheaper. Nothing against Corey, he is a monster, but so is SLH as he had developed nicely. He, Suh and Fairley are the future rotation in the middle. C. Williams I fully expect to be dealt out in a package deal…possibly to move up in April. This Lions fan is NOT worried…Mayhew should NOT be questioned by anyone as he has done in 3 years what Millen couldn’t do it 8 while I ask, how many other GMs coulkd take an 0-16 squad to the playoffs in just 3 years?

  12. “Lotsa yards, but never wins in the postseason…buy low, sell high.”

Wow, there’s always one clown in the bunch.

As a Bear’s fan, I don’t look forward to this guy getting even better, but enjoy watching him play, and happy to see Detroit back as a team…other than two weeks per season.

  13. At least they have Fairley signed to a reasonable contract. Lions have star power with Suh, veteran presence in KVB, and tons of potential in Fairley. I would choose Avril over Williams, but if they do not re-sign Cliff, it’s not like the defensive line will become a weakness.

If it were my money, I’d make secondary top priority. Even with Best’s injury concerns, Leshour Sp? should come back and add more depth in the running game.

Even though Martin has hit on his picks, for Lions fans sanity, I hope Mayhew doesn’t take Millen’s philosophy in only drafting one position.

  14. They need to keep Avril. Rookie salary cap came a year to late for Detroit. Suhs contract is huge! They can’t let Avril go though. Suh, Fairley, and Avril are all really young. They will probably redo/cut KVB and Williams contracts though.

  15. I’m sure he’ll end up in somewhere else. No way the Lions can aford him and still be competitive all around. Too much money on that D line. At the end of the day they weren’y able to win a playoff game. Fix what’s broken even if you sacrifice a little bit on the line

Isn’t Stafford only around 23 also? A.Rod is around 27 i think, but Avril would look good in GB

Tim Tebow makes these guys look silly, not to mention overpaid.

    =================================
    Goobs,

The Lions blew the doors off both Tebow and the Denver defense…in the middle of the Tebow miracle run.

  18. I think they need to keep Avril. Restructure Megatron. Grab a guy like Jayron Hosley in the draft. And try to do something about the linebacker position – they’re mediocre on their best days.

  19. There’s no way that he’ll leave. He’s too essential to the success of that football team. If he does leave, he won’t be a free agent for long.

That sounds pretty naive. We heard the same things about Albert Pujols. Rarely (never?) do we read about how a guy took less money to stay put. Not to mention, it would be foolish for the Lions to pay KVB, Williams, Suh, Fairley, and Avril starters money when they’ve got that Spivey guy in the backfield getting beat on every play.

    Dear Mr. Avril,

The New York Jets have requested that you call them.

He would go nicely with Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw

  22. With Corey Williams making almost $5 million, this makes the drafting of Nick Fairley even more questionable by Schwartz et al.

I’ll assume you meant to be funny, not realizing you are just being dumb. On a number of levels, based on your loony statement above.

    1. Every team is looking for the next Dan Marino, he was a great QB. Stafford might even be better by the time he hangs it up.
    2. I suppose you could say he “never wins in the postseason” although having appeared in the postseason for the first time ever just 4 days ago you make a heavy judgment on a pretty small body of work. He’s started only 1 full season and was undeniably awesome.
    3. Buy low, sell high??? Contracts for #1 overall picks under, especially QBs under the old rookie contract system, do not constitute “buying low”. Stafford’s contract is $72M. Anyhow we wouldn’t trade him for another teams entire draft.

  24. Uwspike-
The words came out of his mouth, he said it during training camp. At the time, I assumed his agent was pretty ticked off as that gives the lions leverage. But aside from being totally committed to the lions, we just had a child and wants to stay in one place to raise his family.

  25. The Bears have the cap room to sign Avril along with a couple of other big players and Israel Idonije is a free agent.
    Let Idonije go.
Stealing Avril away from a division foe doubles his impact.

  26. Here’s food for thought Stafford and vandenbosch restructured their contracts to make cap space this offseason, both played the season for less than one million. I’m not sure what kvb’s original figure was, but you know Stafford took a huge pay cut this season from his astronomical rookie contract……nope, nobody wants to play for the lions lol

  27. Cut VandenBosch (why isnt getting fined for those red contacts?didnt Vick get fined for his wrong color visor?)

They have Willie Young who can step into that role.

Cut Corey Williams and replace him with Fairley.

Should be enough to pay him.

  28. Any Qb would get the same results? Guess you haven’t watched the Lions play in the past. 5000 and 40 just grows on trees right? Yeah kid is waaaayy overrated. Give me a break. At 23 in his first full season he accomplished that with defenses knowing what he was gonna do. He still gets no press whatsoever. If anything Stafford is underrated.

    Oh and bring back Cliff

    @lionsfanatic84–

whose talent? you mean Megatron’s talent.

You could have Rex Grossman winging 60 yd passes up for grabs with the same outcome…

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
you have to be kidding me? You don’t think Matt Stafford is talented?

No doubt Calvin is a beast, but Stafford threw for over 5000 yards and 41 TD’s. Calvin accounts for 1600 and 16 TD’s. Who did he throw the other 25 TD’s to, himself?

  31. If it were me I would cut KVB and keep Avril. They should cut Corey Williams too. Towards the end of the season it was obvious Sammy Hill is surpassing him.

@lionsfanatic84- if anyone could do what Stafford does with Megatron, John Kitna and Dan orlovsky would have put up 5,000 yard.

  32. Asublimeday,
Never went anywhere, my teeth are pleasantly intact, your vision obviously isnt

I may be wrong in this case, but almost no one takes a *pay cut* to stay unless of course they are underperforming.

Now, we know that Stafford and KVB are not underperforming . Most likely they move the salary into some sort of bonus. Still counts against the salary cap eventually.

Professionals are not that altruistic. They have to make as much money as they can because their careers are not much longer than 10 years or so. No one should blame them.

  34. The Lions do have a lot of contracts to resign in a short period of time (CJ, Stafford, Avril …) but honestly I’d be a lot more scared with Millen still in place so no worries this team will continue to get better over the next few years and continue its amazing turnaround.

GO LIONS, in Coach Schwartz & Mayhew we trust !!!

  35. Yup same ol’ lions always winning ten games and going to the playoffs, with a qb throwing 5000 yards, these guys suck lol

    Same ol’ lions.

Same ole dumb Bears fans. Congrats on not finishing in the basement guys, get ready for that to be your [marginally] obtainable goal year in and year out for the next 10 or so

  37. Bill Ford was chilling with Lions fans on Bourbon St. last weekend, taking pics etc. and was asked point blank “Are we going to resign Calvin Johnson?” He answered, without hesitation “Absolutely”. You people need to understand something right now, Martin Mayhew has signed MANY FAs to 1 year deals for this purpose knowing these contracts were coming up. Tulloch will be resigned, Avril will be resigned and Calvin will be resigned.

  38. We’ve got a spot open for Cliff Avril here in Buffalo…
Dareus, Williams, Kelsay and Avril would make a nice combination if Detroit doesn’t want to pay the man.
Avril is more productive than Suh, the Lions better figure something out because some team will be more than willing to shell some dough out for him.

While the the media line (which you are parroting) has stated that Brees had a clean pocket all night, it should be pointed out Drew was sacked more last week than the previous three weeks combined (2 to 1), fumbled on one that should have gone for six points AND had three picks dropped by a putrid Lions’ secondary. All D Line comments should be judged in that light.

  40. People need to realize that if they keep the wide 9 defense they can slot a lot of guys who wont cost as much into that position and get similar production. Jason Babin was a nobody until he got into the wide 9 D, now he has back to back 10+sack seasons. THe defense allow the DEs that don’t fit other systems (6’2″-6’4″ about 260lbs) to look a lot better than they are. I would love to have back Avril, but not if he is looking for Charles Johnson money.

  41. Lions are paying the piper for all the bad years and high draft choices with large contracts. Now the tough decisions need to be made. KVB only has a couple of years left and serves as another coach on the field. They may have to get Corey Williams to restructure his deal or trade him to free up money and let Fairly line up next to Suh. Unfortunately in a salary cap league you can’t have too much money tied up in one area. Ask the Jets how well that worked this year with all that money tied up in CBs

  42. Matthew stafford is elite talent. Showed glimpses this year and he only chucked 5k and 41 tds. Saints got away with “some” holds. Stafford had no run game at all during that playoff game..so bad the million dollar man had to hard scramble to the pylon 10 yards away when only a yard away….kids got all the attributes of a elite qb can’t wait to see how things shake loose. If/after lions sign CJ and includingI staffords hit that will leave $70 million to use towards entire team.we
