Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck has been the subject of considerable rumor, speculation, and at least one false report regarding his choice of an agent.
The focus on Luck has happened for good reason. If Luck chooses CAA, which also represents Peyton Manning, it will suggest the existence of a plan of some sort between the two quarterbacks.
Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports that Luck could be making a statement soon. “We’re still reviewing all of Andrew’s options and are not prepared to make any comments at this point,” Oliver Luck, the West Virginia University A.D. and Andrew’s father, told Mullen via email. “I would think we’ll be ready to make a statement by the weekend or early next week at the latest.”
Mullen reports that industry chatter has centered on Luck being represented by a relative for his contract negotiation and an established agency for off-field marketing opportunities. Per Mullen, Oliver Luck wouldn’t comment on whether NFLPA-certified contract advisor William Wilson is related to Oliver Luck or his wife, Kathy Wilson Luck. Per NFLPA records, William Wilson represents no active NFL players.
Mullen also points out that Ben Dogra of CAA is expected to land Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, which likely would take CAA out of the running for Andrew Luck, anyway.
Given the existence of a true rookie wage scale, there’s no need for the consensus No. 1 pick to have an established agent, or any agent at all. Andrew Luck could even choose to represent himself, with Oliver -- a lawyer and former NFL quarterback -- reviewing the paperwork on an unofficial basis. With, however, Griffin gaining ground (thanks in part to folks like Tony Dungy suggesting Griffin could be the better pick), Andrew Luck would benefit from having a proven agent who can push the Colts hard to ensure that they don’t ultimately choose Griffin, especially since Dogra would be doing everything in his power to get new Colts G.M. Ryan Grigson to warm up to the idea of taking Griffin
