Checking in on Chicago’s vacant G.M. job

We passed along a report over the weekend that Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery was the favorite for the Bears G.M. job.

A report from emerged Monday that Emery was expected to get the job, but the Bears said via multiple reporters that the job hasn’t been offered to Emery yet. He’s still viewed as the favorite.

Emery has worked with Bears player personnel director Tim Ruskell before, so Ruskell may wind up keeping his job if Emery gets the gig.

UPDATE 6:35 p.m. ET: Sean Jensen reports Emery and New England’s Jason Licht are the only two men in the running.

  1. I hope the first thing he does is fire Ruskell. Then sign Forte to a reasonable contract or tag him. I like Forte a lot, but running backs not named Adrian Peterson are not worth a ton of money these days. Even AP might not be the same after that nasty knee injury..,

  2. Emery will have his work cut out for him proving to Bears fans that he is a good hire. Personnel moves in KC haven’t exactly been the greatest.

  3. This hire if true is a real shame. But it is the Bears way CHEAP!! Mark Ross from the giants is the right choice. Lets call this move if true Emery is Lovie’s Puppet . When the Bears go 4-12 next year and lovie and ted the “bean counter” phillips are cashiered out then we will see if what emery can do.

  4. Emery has had a hand in drafting:

Olin Kreutz, Brian Urlacher, Marty Booker, Mike Brown, Jerry Azumah, Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs

Falcons: Johnathon Abraham, Matt Ryan, Justin Blaylock, Roddy White, Tyson Claybo

Chiefs: Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Brandon Albert, Dwayne Bowe, Tyson Jackson, Eric Berry

  5. @furman

He wasn’t with the Chiefs when they drafted Flowers, Carr, Albert, and Bowe. He came in after Pioli. In fact he wasn’t even there for the Tyson Jackson draft (not really a bad thing for his resume at least).

  6. We don’t know how much say Emery had in any of those picks Furman. That’s the problem. He’s a career scout, not a GM. He’s described as a “grinder”. He isn’t young, up and coming, innovative or any of the other characteristics you might’ve hoped for in a new GM. He’s an old scout.

Dude, Abraham was not drafted by the Falcons, he was acquired in a trade. Get your facts straight.

  8. I said it before and I’ll say it again. These are behind the scene guys. The truth is nobody knows how much direct influence either of them has had concerning drafts. This is what we know as fact. When Licht was with the Pats, they went to the SB. When he was with the Eagles, they went to the SB. When he was with Arizona for one year, THEY went to the SB. Coincidence? I think not. Do the math. No wonder the Pats rehired them the first chance they got.

  9. I wonder what the new GM will listen to offers for Devin Hester. A number 1 and number 3 ? would you do it? Thumbs up yes. Thumbs down: No
