Spielman says Vikings “more than willing to listen” to trade offers for No. 3 pick

The Vikings hold the third overall pick in the draft.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll use the third overall pick in the draft.

“[W]e’ll be looking at all the options,” G.M. Rick Spielman said Wednesday on NFL Network.  “If someone wants to come up and get our pick, we’re going to be more than willing to listen.”

Spielman predictably sidestepped the question of whether the Vikings have a bigger need for a left tackle (Matt Kalil) or a receiver (Justin Blackmon), saying only that “we know we’ll be getting a very good player at No. 3.”

And then he added “if we stay there.”

It doesn’t mean the Vikings wants to trade.  They’re just keeping all options open — and in turn keeping everyone guessing.

The trade value of the third overall pick hinges on whether the Rams decide to use the No. 2 selection, or to trade it to a team that wants the quarterback who remains on the board after the Colts take Andrew Luck of Robert Griffin III.

  1. Here in Da LOU, the Rams want to trade with Cleveland and still get Kalil or Blackmon. #2 guarantees a team a QB, not #3.

  2. .

    “more than willing ” ?

seems early for a fire sale, but then again it’s the Vikings . They’re the Santonio Holmes of franchises.

  3. Translation: “Please trade for our 3rd overall pick, pretty please”.

If Luck and Griffin go 1-2, there is not many players left a team will be willing to sacrifice other picks just to move up in the draft.

  4. Well, at least for the first few weeks as GM, Spielman is saying the right things.

Not sure how long it will take before he or the Vikes screw it up.

  5. The very first lie about this years draft was told by Polian when he said the Colts were not guaranteed to take Luck number one.

    This is lie number two.

Expect anything and everything you hear in the next few months from NFL execs and coaches regarding the draft as BS.

In other words, assume everyone is Andy Reid.

  6. This just ads more guessing to what my Browns are going to do at #4. I was hoping that the Vikings would beat the Bears in the last game giving us the #3, but alas they failed me (AND they blew the game against the Broncos when they got Tebow’ed).

I want my Browns to get Griffing only if he falls in their laps. I don’t want them reaching because they will get good picks that can help the team at 4, 22 & 36 (hopefully Kalil or Reiff at T #4 [if not Griffin], a receiver (Floyd or Wright @22), and a linebacker or DB at 36. The Vikings are just playing with the draft numbers so we can’t know what everybody is doing other than the Colts.

  7. When vikings GM says the might not stay at 3, he just means they don’t have to pick at 3. He can just let the clock run out like they are accustomed to, which will change the draft order.

  8. Please con’t be too proud that you’ve got the #3 pick.

    Remember how you got there.

Those top-5 picks are the NFL equivalent of the “walk of shame.”

  9. I will be very disappointed if my Vikings don’t take Kalil with that pick… Unless they think he isn’t as good as the other LT that will go later in the top 10, you go out and get the Kalil.

Premier LTs don’t grow on trees, and they never hit the FA market because they get locked up quickly. Premier wide receivers and corner backs can be found lower in the draft every year. They have a chance to lock up that position for the rest of the decade, and I highly doubt they will be picking this high again next season, so go out and make the best decision for the long term security of the team.

For the 3rd pick, Miami will trade you AJ Feeley and Lamar Gordon

Considering Feeley is on the Rams roster your joke isn’t funny

  11. i know the team sucks right now but i’d trade the #3 pick for a brand new spankin stadium with awesome HD video screens, decent and roomy toilets, & rockin tailgating space!

  12. I dont care where we draft just get Kalil or Blackmon…. I like Claiborne but the defensive backfield needs a lot of help and one guy wont turn it make as big of an impact as kalil or blackmon….. i like the idea of trading back and getting more picks but i think the vikes need either kalil or blackmon

  13. Smart play. The Vikings have a good core of players, and I personally think Reiff is better than Kalil so I would be all about trading back so someone can leap-frog the Browns for Griffin, allowing the Vikingsclove back a couple of spots, get Reiff, snd gain a pick or two in later rounds.

  14. The Vikes Should stay at #3 and take Kalil if Ponder Isn’t Upright, What Would it matter. I can understand to at least listening to offers! Sliding down to #5 and someone elses 2nd round might make sense
