Elway: Tebow is the starter, but Broncos are in the QB market

Broncos front office boss John Elway wouldn’t dare anger Denver fans by suggesting that anyone other than Tim Tebow will enter training camp as the starting quarterback. But he will go so far as to say he hopes to acquire someone who can compete with Tebow in camp.

We will be in the market to find more quarterbacks,” Elway told the Denver Post at the Senior Bowl. “That’s our approach with Tim being our starter as we go to training camp, that we’ll look at free agency and the draft.”

Elway has described the kind of quarterback he likes as “the big athlete who can throw the ball from the pocket,” which doesn’t exactly fit Tebow to a T and serves as a reminder that Tebow is the quarterback Elway inherited, not the quarterback Elway chose.

The question now is whether Elway will choose to bring in a quarterback who has a real chance of unseating Tebow in training camp.

  1. Looks like Elway is still working as a smart executive. He realizes the fans will be crazy if he picks anyone but their precious Tebow as a starter, but he is also telling everyone that he is still looking for his guy.

Let’s see if Tebow can change the viewpoint on him.

  2. Jut because he was a Super Bowl QB, doesn’t mean he can judge talent. Whats wrong Elway? Afraid of a little competition. You weren’t all that hot, BUT you had a better supporting cast they Tebow had. Work on that, loser

  3. I’m not a fan of Timmy, but this is not news. Brady Quinn is the backup, which makes it brutally obvious that the Broncos would be looking for more QBs.

  4. I’ve joked about with all the manning news that I’ve missed talking about tebow. Now that’s there’s an article about tebow now, I’ll never joke about it again.

  5. If you rip John friggin Elway for not showing enough blind loyalty to a longshot development prospect, you are not a Broncos fan.

  6. He will sign 6ft 5in Jason Cambell to “compete” in TC with Tebow, and spend a 2nd or 3rd rounder on either that very tall, and even taller QB.. both of whom are presently playing in the state of AZ.

That is my prediction and I’m sticking with it!

  7. baddorange: your right, just because he has taken a team to 5 superbowls as a QB, it doesn’t mean that he has the ability to judge quarterbacks.

I have never been an Elway fan, but he has been to more superbowls than any other QB that I can think of.

He had alot more winning years than losing. He has a history of last minute wins and comebacks.

He was known as a scrambling QB, he did a little bit of everything.

I would think that if no other position on the field that QB he could be a great judge on talent if for no other reason then the fact that he was in the top 10 of all time in his position.

Who are you trying to say could be a better judge of talent in this regard?

  8. Of course they’re in the market for a QB. The only other QB on the market is Brady Quinn, and he’s a FA. If he takes off, the Broncos have Tebow. That’s it. What NFL team would go into a season with one QB?! Come on.

  9. Deciphering the John speak: “I really do love you but what has your sister been up to lately?”.

If anything Tebow proved he can play in the NFL but just not at QB. The Donks have an awesome defense and rebounded well from their loss by picking up Del Rio. They have zero time to waste on a project like Tebow.

Strike now on your weak division and make a run in the playoffs. Tebow can’t deliver now.

  10. @baddorange

John Elway went to 5 Super Bowls, the latter two being the only time he had a supporting cast. He won the MVP his 4th season in. Maybe you should learn a thing or two before you open your mouth (or start typing).

  11. in other words the donks are just casually dating while waiting for Mr. Right to come along.

  12. There are two distinct camps that very much need to get a clue:

    1) Those who think Tebow can’t grow into a championship QB.

    2) Those who think John Elway was overrated.

If you’re a die-hard in either of those camps, well, you may have a learning disability.

  13. In retrospect Elway’s first draft was a bust. Von Miller and what else ? the defense sucks big time and the offensive line could not stop the rush. In addition to defense they need a tight end and a running back. Tebow is the least of their problems. He has already broken several of Elway’s records.Would Elway be happier with Gabbert ? Wouldn’t doubt it.

  14. Tebow should ask for a trade. The constant doubting of Tebow is rediculous. With no Tebow there’s no playoffs, no playoff win and Elway did a lowsy job and Denver’s record is probably 4-12

Elway has lost the fan base he used to own and now has trouble dealing with Tebow being the face of the Broncos.

At some point shouldn’t Elway be seen and not heard? The only time Elway gets any press now is to say the word “Tebow”

Shut up and get the Broncos some players.

  15. “Elway wouldn’t dare anger Denver fans by suggesting that anyone other than Tim Tebow will enter training camp as the starting quarterback”

That is hilarious. Are these the same ‘fans’ that didn’t bother going to the last few home games, even with Tebow starting? The stand were half full, and that is with the Broncos going to the playoffs.

  16. The Broncos will always be in the market for and need QBs. Not due to Tebow’s abilities, but backups are more coveted for teams with mobile QB’s because of their likelihood for injury is so much higher. You can’t afford for an offense to completely stall if the starter gets hurt. I would love to see the broncos pickup Russell Wilson in the late rounds of the draft.

  17. Come on people, let’s stop discussing this clown.

    Yes, I mean Tebow..
    Elway is a legend.

    What has Tebow done?
He beat the Dolphins, Raiders, Chiefs, Jets, Chargers, Vikings, Bears. Then lost to the Chiefs. Barely beat a hobbled Steelers team. Got hammered in the Divisionals. Come on, this guy’s overrated.

    Wake up.

  18. So Elway likes “the big athlete who can throw the ball from the pocket”? Hmmmm.

    “Hello Payton? John Elway calling.”

No kidding – it would solve Elway “Timmy Trouble”……not even the craziest Tebow fans could object to Payton Manning taking over if he gets healthy. Maybe he could even teach Tim how to throw a spiral!

  19. Tebow is the ultimate dilemma for this franchise.

His W to L record looks nice.

He won many games late. (albeit defensive help, and clutch kicker, and against bad teams)

He is a economic powerhouse and fan favorite.

    BUT ….

He completed 44% of his passes (JaMarcus Russell 52% to gain some perspective).

He doesn’t even know what a “pocket” is

He will run himself into injury, might as well be a RB.

Lets face it, Tebow is Peyton Hillis at QB.

  20. Elway and Fox has handled this situation so poorly that I hope they don’t make the same mistake. They can’t forget what Tebow did for this team. They should bring in qb’s to develop but make sure they don’t fall for the trap of seeing a guy practice better than tebow and making them the starter. Just because you can throw pretty spirals doesn’t mean you can lead a team to wins. (i.e. Kyle Orton) Tebow deserved to be the start week 1. I think he’ll get much better next year but will never make it look easy.

  21. Look it guys, Elway’s smart, like it or not. He knows that Tebow will sooner or later face the inevitable, getting hurt scrambling or running. Tebow need only to ask Vick about that broken rib sandwich he got from the Redskins last year.

  22. Enough with all these Tim Tebow apologists. Elway is correct in looking at all his options. Let’s face the facts…Tebow got many breaks this year with some stupid plays by Bronco opponents. Onside kicks, VERY long field goals, dumb plays by the Bears and a pick thrown by Ponder among others. Ifr one or two of those things don’t happen they don’t make the playoffs. If I’m Elway, I can’t sit in my box and watch some guy complete 5 of 16 passes for three quarters or worse. Sure it was exceiting, but Tebow’s play (passing!) is just not something I’d feel comfortable with. I’d look for a veteran and I’d draft some guy in the first three rounds and let them all go at it. These Tebow fans are out of touch. It’s almost like a damned cult!

  23. I’m not totally sure just who would compete for the starting QB gig – for one you just know come FA day Brady Quinn is outta Denver, and I don’t blame him. He was shown a LOT of disrespect this past season and even though he’s not that good, it stands to reason he’ll blow Denver faster than Tebow dumps a pass. So, unless they bring in some prospects and free agents to truly compete against this guy, it’s all over with except for the wailing and gnashing of teeth (I so gotta stop with the Biblical nonsense – sorry) In other words, Timmah will be your QB next season. Deal with it, and we apologize in advance……

  24. Bringing in a good pocket QB and lining Tebow up next to him with options would make for a potent set up….providing Denver shores up a defense that could not stop a cold and recievers that dont drop the ball. Would be interesting since the NFL can and does change rules to add a stat where by the reciever gets credit for the blatant drop than the QB. OMT when a QB throws the ball away rather than take a sack or because everyone is covered is smart…even the greatest learned when and where to do that. Many of Tebows incompletions were drops as well as throw aways. Do not underestimate his work ethic this off season. i personally know the folks that own D1 where many pros go to shore up thier skills and to the man who works there, they all said NOBODY has ever trained thier with Tebows drive. D1 is one of the best facilities of its kind in the country. Many may be eating crow pie if Elway get the defense fixed and decent recievers. If not the QB will make no difference as Tebow had noting to do with Brady shredding the defense…he has done that to alot of teams.

  25. John Elway is positioning for the Tim camp competition, which Tim will lose out to ANY QB.
Last year it was Kyle, then Brady, then Adam, then Tim when it came to camp evaluation.
IMO Ryan Tannehill will be the draft selection and Tim will excel at bu qb running options.
All is good with the Bronco and Lord Nations.

  26. Tebow is at least as good a RB as P Hillis… If not better.
Can’t wait to see Tim “overrated” Tebow play RB or get ran out of the NFL…..preferably the latter.

  27. As far as elway going to 5 super bowls – he only won 2 – not really a great record as far as “winning the big game”

  28. there are 3 distinct camps.

    1) tebow fans. this group should not be confused with denver bronco fans. their sole purpose is to promote tim tebow and support tim tebow only. their loyalty has no team affiliation. they miss the part that makes him a “football player” and think he should only be a qb. unrealistic regarding his throwing ability.

    2) tebow haters. this group can’t stand tebow. no matter what he does they don’t understand how/why he is in the league. they see only a person who can’t throw a ball. they miss the part that makes him a good”football player.” unrealistic regarding his ability to help a team. feel he is no help at all.

    3) bronco fans. poor bronco fans. stuck in the middle of the tebone heads–they just want to win. they want whatever is best for the team and they just want to win. if tebow is the answer, so be it, if he’s not then move on. they believe in john elway. they bleed orange and blue.

  29. if elway was smart he’d trade tebow to jax for their 1st round pick and then take RGIII

  30. Tebow is a gimmick. Next year teams will figure him out and he’ll bomb.

  31. it’s comical to me when people say tebow is overrated. How can a guy that is constantly ripped be overrated. Fact of the matter is this team has many holes. This is a 4-12 team that tebow helped lead to the playoffs because let’s face facts they were dead in the water at 1-4 and orton was 4-18 in his last 22 starts prior. So let’s not act like tebow inherited a team with weapons on offense. Yes the defense played well and kept them in the close ones but they gave up 40 or more points like 5 times. So should tebow be the starter going into next year, yes. Should elway go out and get some weapons for him, yes because they are going to need weapons regardless of who the qb is. Help the guy out he is still developing but clearly he can play because a guy that couldn’t wouldn’t have lead a terrible team to a playoff win.

  32. Elway, fottball is evoluting to mobile QBs. The days of strictly pocket passers are waning…

  33. I find it shocking and disgusting that people tear a down a kid who five minute before game time makes sure he makes a kid who has cancer or some other ailment happy. He took a team that was 1-4 and made the playoffs and while they fell short they still made it farther than probably anyone outside of denver thought they kid. You all say “Oh, he wins ugly he doesnt deserve to be here!” Id like to remind you folks that we had Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, Peyton Hillis and Eddy Royal! what the hell did that ever do for us? Tebow may not be the prettiest passer but hell he made the throws that meant the most! He did pretty well for being a quarterback who has never had a real off season as the starter. I am not worried though because his whole life ever since his mom was told that he was “bunch of fetus mush” hes beeen proving wrong and shutting up the doubters. The sad thing about all of you is that even if he did win a superbowl or hell even ten you would still yell at the top of your lungs ” He Sucks!” Just because he doesnt average 300 yards a game. The NFL has apparantly turned into a league all about show and not results. He inspires people around him and unlike most nfl players these days he keeps fighting even when all hope seems lost. I just dont understand why such a harsh criticism for a kid who made the playoffs in technically his first year! I have never seen a young qb criticized as much he has been. Also you say that he shoves god in our face, when most payers praise our lord just as much as he does! I am baffled with all the hate I dont get it. The only conclusion that I have come to is that you are all jealous not of his football skills but who he is. He is a person that walks the walk and most of us cant do that and so we have to tear him down because that is the only way to feel better about ourselves. I mean our receivers mine DT probably wouldnt even start on any other team and our line will good still had times where tebow as getting sacked as soon as the ball was snapped. Yes the guy has to get better but who doesnt? Im sure he will and prove you all wrong with no sign of vengance and leave us with a god bless and continue to do waht he does best, win.

  34. Anyone that bashes Elway while blindly supporting Tebow isn’t a true Bronco fan. Any person in Elway’s position plans four or five steps ahead and that includes having a backup plan at QB in case Tebow does not improve or even digresses after this off-season and a full training camp. A true fan supports Elway and the ENTIRE TEAM not just Tebow.

Best post re Tebow since he joined the team. I hope you play the powerball and win millions of dollars this week cuz your post is that good!

    ——————————–

The guys with more than two SB wins are:
    1. Bradshaw
    2. Montana
    3. Aikman
    4. Brady

Mr. Ed and five others with two; definitely not great…

    smh

  37. I like what baddorange said about improving Tebow’s supporting cast & his comraderie with Tebow. Good boy. I pray that Tim gets some training like the QB school the Packers Coach McCarthy created & helped A. Rogers with. My concern is the wellbeing of Tim. Such a nice man; I hope he takes every adversity in stride & does his best. Next season, I would love to see him become an excellent passer, a master of the offense = calling excellent audibles, etc. while continuing as a big running threat. Regardless, I truly hope he lives a long & wonderful life.
