Patriots bring back Tiquan Underwood

One of the surprising stories of Super Bowl weekend was that the Patriots released wide receiver Tiquan Underwood on Saturday afternoon, just a day before the big game. But both sides insisted there were no hard feelings involved, and Underwood has already been brought back into the fold.

Ian R. Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have signed Underwood. That means he’ll be able to participate in offseason workouts and minicamps with the team, and he’ll be there at the start of training camp. As long as he doesn’t get cut again.

Underwood took his release well, saying he understands that it’s a business and that his job wasn’t guaranteed, even after he had gone through all the Super Bowl festivities, become a Media Day hit for shaving the Patriots’ logo into his hair and brought friends and family to town for the big game. Underwood still got paid the $44,000 that everyone on the losing team in the Super Bowl gets paid.

And so there seem to be no hard feelings from either side, and Underwood is back in the fold after a rough weekend.

  1. His release was a paper move. He was going to be inactive and they needed his spot in the line-up for depth on the D-line with the possibility of players cramping in the dome. Underwood still got paid and would’ve been partying with the team had they won. Michael Wilbon and the others that screamed bloody murder werer too dumb to realize that.

  2. This guy might have been their David Tyree Sunday but they never game him the chance. Chumps.

  3. Just imagine if this would have been the guy that would have made the game winning play? its very possible, think David Tyree, think Timmy Smith (Redskins). You just never know who will step up and who wont.

That’s why Brady has more than Eli. And a hotter wife.

Eli’s wife Abby is pretty damn hot and wasn’t used up by Leonardo Dicaprio!

You are to dumb to realize Wilbon’s point. It wasn’t the move, it was the timing. Belichick had to wait to the night before to cut him when all of Underwood’s family were in town to see him. The so called “genius” coach couldn’t figure he needed an extra DE in the two weeks leading up to the game. Get real

  6. You have to wonder if this is karma coming back to bite them. I totally understand the move from a business standpoint, but this was a pretty low thing to do to anyone for simply more depth on the D-Line IN CASE multiple players get injured. Hell, they should be more worried about a specialty position getting injured (like a long-snapper or punter or QB).

Oh well, karma goes around and comes around I guess.

  7. Patriots lost the Super Bowl. Red Socks will lose to the Yankees.. aww man rough year for you.

  8. Don’t blink Tiquan….you never know what Belichick might do next…..I’ve watch the game three times and I’m still tryng to find Silvestro

  9. @tepiii3 I realize that whether it was see how Ocho Cinco did in practice leading up to the game (me misseed the AFC Championship) or to hide their cards from the Giants as long as possible or whether it was to before deciding what receivers would dress, Belichick had his reason. He’s supposed to pick players to dress in the Super Bowl based on who has family in town? Underwood understood and handled it like a pro, and is still with the team. Get a clue.

Belichick’s super-secret strategy didn’t work. The joke is on you, hore ass ivory.

  12. See what happens when you act classy. The team brings you back. Glad he was a gentleman about it.

  13. Glad to see him back. I’m pretty sure HE knew what was going on which is the only important thing. I’m also pretty sure he wouldn’t have been all over twitter wishing the Pats well and saying he was rooting for them before the game if he felt they treated him like crap. He’s a class young man, unlike all the idiot haters just waiting to jump on a team with no facts behind them.

  14. I bet he is scratching his head. Ocho catches one pass and yet he was sent packing and was sitting somwhere watching the game on the tube.

  15. Everyone made such a big deal out of it, and now he’s back. So obviously it wasnt such a big deal.

He won’t make the final roster though come September.

  17. The timing of the move had to do with Gronk and his health, which BB didnt really know until Friday

  18. Bill has been cutting or trading a lot of players that could have helped him win a super bowl. Richard Seymour was his biggest mistake. he is still a beast and that’s exactly what that defense misses. what he did with Underwood was just plain heartless. the pats organization likes to bring up the 18 undrafted players even though they’ve had a ton of draft picks the last few years.
the genius is running out of juice. sooner or later these huge losses will take effect on him and force him to retire.
He doesnt seem as prepared as he always was for these big games. makes you really wonder about the video tape scandal.

  19. @siaaa They just made it to the Super Bowl and have won 29 games over last 2 seasons while a lot of the talent that made up the team thru 2007 has retired. Name another team that’s been so good for so long without falling below an elite level. The ’80s-90s 49ers are the only team I can think of and they didn’t have a salary cap.

yes you’re right, but the point I’m trying to make is that they’ve been losing games that they always won in the past. Maybe having a 31st ranked defense will get you to the super bowl in the declining AFC and on Brady’s amazing talent but it will no longer win it. This team went 13-3 and was the number seed in the AFC and did not beat a single team over .500 the entire season. That has to be the first time thats ever happened in football.
The NFC is definitely on the rise and will be winning the super bowl for the next couple of years. All the X great AFC teams like Steelers, Pats, Colts, Ravens, are in a decline.
There are about 5 teams in the NFC that could have beaten the Pats in the Super Bowl this year.
