Jim Harbaugh picks Alex Smith as his Pebble Beach caddie

The last time Jim Harbaugh picked Alex Smith for a job that few people thought suited him well, it turned into a division title and a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

So you might want to watch out for Harbaugh at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament this weekend. Harbaugh eschewed experienced caddies with a track record of great success and opted to have Smith carry his bags around the loop. So, in other words, he pretty much made the same decision he made when it came to the 49ers offense.

All signs point to the 49ers making that decision again for the 2012 season, even if Colin Kaepernick thinks that there’s going to be a competition for the job. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reports that Harbaugh told Smith that he’ll caddy for the quarterback in next year’s tournament, which seems like another pretty good sign that Smith won’t be going anywhere once free agency opens.

That’s a good thing because Smith doesn’t seem to have a magic touch for caddying. Harbaugh and partner Ryan Moore are in 101st place after the first day of action. Smith has other obligations Friday and Saturday, which means that assistant coaches will be on Harbaugh’s bag the rest of the way and that we’ll have to look for other golf pairings for football free agency prognostications.
