Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel says the team has told him nothing about whether he’s going to be back for the 2012 season, but that if it’s up to him, he’ll remain in Philadelphia.

I don’t know. I’m hoping to be here. That’s all,” Samuel told the Philadelphia Daily News.

With Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the fold, and Samuel due a $9.4 million base salary next season, there’s been talk that the 31-year-old Samuel is no longer necessary, but he says he proved in 2011 that he’s important to the Eagles’ defense.

“I’m getting ready for next year,” Samuel said. “I had a productive season.”

Samuel says he hasn’t spoken with new secondary coach Todd Bowles, but he believes he’ll be able to do whatever Bowles asks him to do.

“Yeah, I’ll play whatever I need to play. As long as you make the play, what difference does it make?” Samuel said.

The question is whether Samuel will be making plays in Philadelphia or somewhere else.
