Mayock: Vontaze Burfict is not a first-round player “at all”

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict appeared to be trending toward a future top-ten draft prospect when he was voted first-team All-American as a true sophomore. Burfict wasn’t even honored as an All-Pac 12 pick as a junior, however, and his production slipped mightily across the board.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has watched Burfict’s games. And he isn’t impressed.

“I’m not a fan at all,” Mayock said of Burfict on Wednesday’s conference call with the media. “I just watched a bunch of his tape the other day. I came away unimpressed.”

Burfict has been criticized for off-field issues as well as his on-field self control, committing a high number of personal foul penalties. Mayock said he tried to filter out Burfict’s off- and on-field character when breaking down the player.

“His instincts aren’t good,” Mayock added. “He gets enveloped by bigger bodies and he runs around blocks. … For a big, strong guy, he’s nowhere near as strong at the point of attack as I thought he’d be.

“I don’t see first round at all.”

  1. I’m an ASU fan and I’ve been saying this since the day he played his first game. He doesn’t shed blocks and he doesn’t attack gaps aggressively. He makes those 2-3 plays a game that makes the crowd go, “Ooooohhh!!!” or “Aaaawwww!!!” but he doesn’t play consistently throughout the whole game. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he washed out of the NFL in a couple of years. His personal fouls alone cost us two games this season.

  2. I agree. His highlight tape on youtube may be scary but the game film doesn’t lie. He misses too many tackles and is a loose cannon.

With the right team and organization, he may have the chance to be a top MLB in the game.

  3. Mayock must have been using his Huddle Report account again. Drew Boylhart of The Huddle Report has been saying this for a month.

  4. This is the guy whos supposed to fill that need at mlb when ray finally hangs up the cleats. He isnt close to ray status but i know the last time baltimore drafted a linebacker from arizona state, he became the defensive player of the year (suggs). Take a shot ozzie. We drafted jimmy smith last year com’on. Anotber guy with dirty laundry (smellin’ like bong water).

  5. He is the Albert Haynesworth of LB’s. He has some really good physical skills but lacks discipline and has questionable work habbits and character. I bet Mike his job that he will be drafted in the first round.

  6. He’s about 20 years too late for today’s game. Sounds like a up-and-coming Jerome Harrison (nothing wrong with that) but with off the field distractions also.

  7. I’m sick of all the Eagles fans screaming for them to draft this guy. Maybe if he’s still there in the 3rd…

You can play GM on YouTube for the hell of it but it doesn’t mean you know what you are talking about.

  8. haha!! ignorant rats fans want burfict? take him! PLEASE!! i saw every game ‘Tez ever played at ASU and as a proud alum and booster i can give you a quick evaluation of the dude: fat, lazy, doesn’t make plays, locker room cancer. as a stillers fan, i respect the heck out of ray lewis. dude is a warrior. and asu alum suggs is a beast. but vontaze burfict? nobody should draft that dude. he has no heart, no discipline, he’s a penalty machine and, quite simply, the dude just doesn’t make plays. he went from a pre-season ALL-AMERICAN(!) to HONORABLE MENTION in the pac-12. without missing any games, that’s damn hard to do. quite an accomplishment. further, sun devils fans are THRILLED he left early. we don’t want him. osweiler is the best sun devil in this draft. he’s the sleeper. 6’8″ AND mobile. accurate, strong arm. he’s the guy you want.

  9. People here that think Ray Lewis can wave a magic wand and turn social misfits like this into stable, productive pros are delusional. This guy will never be disciplined enough to learn to function in a controlled, schematic defense, maintaining his responsibilites while respecting teammates and the system. He’ll get drafted late, bounce around the league for four years, then be working as a butcher in the local grocery making $12 an hour… while bemoaning…. the man kept me down.
