Nicks likely to get tag if Brees deal finished in time

Saints quarterback Drew Brees believes he’ll have a new contract before free agency starts.

If the deal comes in time for the Saints to avoid using the tag on Brees, the Saints will have the flexibility to retain either guard Carl Nicks or wide receiver Marques Colston with the one-year tag.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that Nicks is first in line. That decision makes sense because Nicks is a first team All Pro guard and Colston isn’t quite that elite a wide receiver.

The Saints may also be hesitant to pay Nicks the same huge money long term that they handed guard Jahri Evans. Keeping Nicks and Evans together for another year with Nicks on a one-year deal would be easier to swallow.  Colston may be easier to sign long-term than Nicks and Colston would be easier to live without.

While Colston has had a special career in New Orleans, the Saints have a lot of weapons (Jimmy Graham, Lance Moore, and Darren Sproles) that catch passes over the middle of the field like Colston.

  1. Why is it taking so long to sign Brees? shouldnt this have been taken care of before he ever had a chance to sniff hte FA market?

at this point he has no motive to sign a deal until he is franchised or he can see wehat hte rest of hte league would give for him, if only to leverage the saints for more money.

  2. Well, Brees does recognize that inorder to win another Super Bowl, the team needs to be able to pay other players in addition to him. So, unless you don’t count that as motivation…

  3. It’s taking so long because of just that. The structure is a challenge in that they have to pay him market value and not strangle their salary cap. He’s not going anywhere.

  4. With the right moves, this Saints roster has the potential to be one of the greatest dynasties ever. anyone who disagrees just doesn’t know football.

but the biggest move would be learning how to win a big game away from home.

  6. I hope Brees and the Saints cannot agree until after tag time. I want to see Nicks in Burgundy and Gold. He can help restore the Redskin Hogs’ greatness! HTTR!

    49ers disagree

How about the Panthers? Do they disagree with being swept this past season?

  9. Nobody does what Colston does for that team. He’s their tallest wideout at 6’4″, he has spectacular hands and route-running ability, and even on an offense that spread the ball around as much as the Saints, he still has 1,000 yard seasons every year he’s out there.

And the man is made of steel. Multiple knee surgeries? No problem. Broken collar bone? He only missed three games. Bone-crushing hits from linebackers? Not an issue.

After watching the way Sean Payton and his staff coached up Brian De La Puente to takeover at center for Pro Bowlers Jonathan Goodwin and Olin Kreutz, I have no doubt that another guard could step in and take over Carl Nicks’ role.

But there’s no one like Marques Colston. No one.

  10. Colston would be a great # 2 WR in Arizona. Team him up with Larry Fitzgerald and that combo would be very dangerous. Shore up that offensive line and Kolb might look a whole lot better.

  11. If the Saints don’t think Colston is all that important, I am sure we can find a home for him on the Patriots offense. He is a stud and they will quickly regret it if he goes. It’ll be a lot harder for those other JAGS to get open when opposing defenses don’t have to be keeping 4 eyes on him.
