Routt’s new deal expected today

Reuters

On Sunday morning, we reported that former Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt will soon be picking his next team.

We now expect that decision to be finalized and formalized today.

Routt has visited the Bills, Chiefs, and Bengals since being released by the Raiders, who made the move to avoid fully guaranteeing his $5 million base salary for 2012.  (Routt nevertheless leaves with $10 million in hand and another $5 million on the way; even DeAngelo Hall thinks that’s a good haul for a short stint in Oakland.)

Since the Chiefs play the Raiders twice per year and they face the possible departure of Brandon Carr via free agency and they use the same kind of man-to-man style with which Routt is familiar, we’ve got a feeling Routt will be wearing an arrowhead on his next helmet.

UPDATE 2:00 p.m. ET:  And the blind squirrel gnaws on an acorn.

  1. Good, I want him on the Chiefs. We might not get completions, but we will get plenty of free penalty yards. Routt isn’t completely worthless mind you, he can knock down a pass, but the man also tries to knock down the reciever in the process.

  2. Why do guys continually give press to a second rate corner? Oh that’s right, it’s Raider related. You know that any story, good or bad, involving the Raiders will get more hits than a story about any other team. Glad I’m a fan.

  3. Hopefully it is the Bengals. Our DB situation is in dire straights.
    We have:
Leon Hall – Torn Achilles, FA after 2012.
    Nate Clements – Old.
Pacman – FA & poss suspension, bad attitude.
Chris Crocker – Terrible in coverage, misses assignments.
    Reggie Nelson – FA.
Brandon Ghee – Inexperience and injury prone.
They really should have kept Morgan Trent and re-signed Jonathan Joseph.

  4. Even though we had some rough seasons under Al Davis… it was not from lack of trying to get the best players.

Davis NEVER skimped… now the new regime is all about the $$$ and nothing more.

    “Just make money, baby.”

  5. Best of luck. He was a good player for the most part, just not quite worth 10M per year.

  6. I hope routt does go to k.c so Carson can drop a couple of bombs to denarius and Jaco by on him and while were at we will take a couple of holding and p.i’s too. Thank you kc from a raiders fan

  7. As a Raider fan, I”m hoping he signs with the Chiefs. He was an overpaid penalty magnet.

  8. This guy is so awful, People who dont watch the Raiders want this guy on their team are crazy.. There is a reason why Raiders released him and it was not about the money, If he was that good Raiders would of paid him the money..
He is horrible and responsible for the Raiders not making the playoffs.

  9. Glad the Raiders gave away 10,000 seats to every game last year. They have the smallest stadium capacity in NFL and still can’t fill it up. Raider nation is bogus! Typical Raider fan talks tough but take off the makeup and just a little pudgy loser. Every NFL fan should take in a game there as the stench is something you will never forget. Look across the Bay losers!

Hall signed a 4 yr extension last season. That being said I agree that he would be an upgrade to this crowd.

  11. Please pick the Chiefs! Please pick the Chiefs! Please pick the Chiefs! Please pick the Chiefs!
I’m gonna love watching Palmer pick him apart.

  12. The fans in KC will think his name is pass interference number 26 by the end of the season because that’s all they’re ever going to hear.

  13. Chiefs should keep Carr or sign both. Carr lives in KC during the offseason and is involved in the community. Plus, instead of being near or at the top of the league in pass interference penalties, he’s at or near the top in passes defensed with Flowers.

From one Bengals fan to another you’re 100% clueless about your own team.

Hall just signed an extension during camp last year and will be ready before camp.

Clements wasn’t great by any means this year but he was solid. Probably good enough for another year while we groom a new first rounder.

Pacman has never had a bad attitude in Cincy but he probably will be suspended.

    Crocker does suck.

Nelson is a free agent but a good safety. He has a good chance of coming back.

Brandon Ghee hasn’t even been active for a game so idk why you’re talking about him.

Kelly Jennings is crappy but he looked better towards the end of the year. He’s also a FA.

Just thought I would clear that up for everyone!

  15. As a Raider fan it would be great if one of Al’s overpaid underachiving “great playaaaa’s”, Routt signs on with KC. He is a penalty waiting to happen. Routt had more penalties by himself last season then Green Bays entire D had all last season……

With the Raiders “Coach” Davis could care less how undisciplined his players were. Its going to be a culture shock playing for Crennel/Pioli as it would have if he stayed in Oakland under Allen/McKenzie…..

  16. Yes! Chiefs! He’s your problem now!

Do you think McKenzie’s plan all along was to dump him AND get KC to take him?

They’ll almost certainly let Carr walk now.

No it wasn’t from lack of trying to get the best, it was lack of ability to identify who they were. And then being generous to a fault with the mediocrity that was brought in.

You have to love a computer tough guy who talks trash with no intention of backing it up. I would love for you to say that in the parking lot before a game, but you waon’t cause you are a coward.Look across the Bay at what? 1st time they made the play off’s since 2002? Yeah that’s something to be proud of and that what happened they fumbled 2 punts and cost themselves the game, yeah ok. get a clue loser and stop hiding behind a computer tough guy!

  19. Of course he had a lot of penalties, that’s what the sorry azz raiders do. If you don’t committ penalties you can’t be a raider.

  20. ratbastard, you hit the nail on the head. Former Raiders tend to have trouble adjusting to different team cultures. I don’t know how the Chiefs organization works but I know they don’t have an Al Davis to coddle guys like Routt.

It’s good that Stan will still be in a man-to-man system but I guarantee OAK will have something for him next year. Our young WRs aren’t the crispest route runners but against Routt they won’t have to be. Ford and Moore and H-B are all just as fast as Routt so it’ll just be a matter of making the play.

Palmer is going to love knowing that there’s a new guy to pick on in KC. Takes away the mystery.
