Before last season, the Titans offered cornerback Cortland Finnegan a contract worth roughly $28 million over four years. Finnegan’s camp wanted a deal greater than Johnathan Joseph’s five-year, $48.75 million deal.

One solid season by Finnegan later, the two sides don’t appear any closer to a deal.

The Titans and Finnegan’s agent Terry Watson spoke last week, but no contract proposals were exchanged according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. The two sides will meet in person this week.

Watson is looking for a contract that makes Finnegan “one of the top paid cornerbacks in the NFL.”

If Finnegan hits the open market, we suspect that’s the type of deal he will get. Wyatt doesn’t think the Titans will use the franchise tag to pay Finnegan more than $10 million, but we still consider it a strong possibility.

Even if the Titans aren’t willing to make Finnegan one of the game’s best paid cornerbacks, it doesn’t make sense for them to let one of their best players walk away.
