Colts can’t watch Manning throw before option bonus due

We have yet another reason to believe that the Colts will cut Peyton Manning before his $28 million roster bonus is due on March 8.

Albert Breer of notes that the Colts owner Jim Irsay, G.M. Ryan Grigson, and coach Chuck Pagano can’t watch Manning throw until April due to rules in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Colts’ medical staff can watch Manning and report back, but they are not allowed to tape the workout.

Longtime Manning teammate Jeff Saturday insists that Manning will play in 2012. It’s hard to imagine Manning playing for the Colts if the team can’t see his on-field progress before investing that kind of money in him.

  1. For heaven’s sake … just cut the guy and end all this drama. Everyone knows that’s how this story is going to go.

  2. the next couple of weeks will get really crazy between Luck pre signing efforts… back channel Peyton offers from the Phins etc.. and Isray / Manning tweet wars…

    let the games begin!

  3. That won’t happen until at least March 3rd. As. Season ticket holder I’m hoping there is an end to this. One way or the other. I plan to renew my tickets whether they release PM or not. Renewals are due March 2nd. Based on the politics that Mr. Irsay has been playing. Releasing PM before the March 2nd could have a major impact on season ticket renewals. Let’s end the madness and move on.

  4. zzzzzzzzzzz…….Colts cut him, he signs with KC as a FA. Chiefs wheel and deal to trade up in the draft for RGIII, who sits behind Manning for a couple of years and then Manning rides off into the sunset while RGIII takes over and reigns as KC’s QB1 for the next 12 years!……zzzzzzzzzzz

It’s my dream, I can run it around and around in my head as many times as I want!!! LOL.

  5. haahah stupid union crap and bullsh%t….. yeah lets pay him 28 million but cant see him throw till after we pony up… I am not digging TZhe Colts owner at all but I dont see how paying him would even be an option or any player for that matter if you cant even see how they are doing lol that unions for ya

  6. This new rule is absurd. How could any team justify paying the $28 million without seeing him throw? Absolutely stupid.

  7. maybe if manning would decrease his outrageous demands on the signing bonus, the colts would have better options. he was paid 28 million to do absolutely nothing last year. why is jim irsay being made to look like the bad guy here? manning is the biggest drama queen alive, beating out favre for sure.

  8. I wonder if there’s anything in the CBA that would prevent Manning from throwing in front of the media? Seems like an easy work-around.

I think everyone is forgetting how much money Manning stands to lose if the Colts cut him. It’s worth his while to not get cut.

  9. Well I guess this explains why the new GM and HC haven’t seen him throw as of yet. And everyone thought it was a sign the new GM had absolutely no intrest in Peyton (he may not but not seeing Peyton throw was not a sign of that). Got to love false speculations and media created drama.

  10. I am sure it would be real hard for Eli to film his brother throwing and email it to someone in Indy. This seems like an easy rule to break, and one that probally needs some adjusting anyway. In a scenario like this the CBA rule should be waived for the better of the teams future.

  11. There are 28 million reason for the colts to just break the rule. Assuming the punishment is something like a 7th round pick or 10K fine, they should just go ahead and watch him.

  12. Jennifer:

If they cut Manning before the deadline, it will only add fuel to the fire of people that are insisting that Manning is being pushed out the door and treated unfairly.

  13. That pretty much equals buying a sports car before any of the specs are released, the dealer cannot commit to color and you need 4 doors, but you cannot be assured that model will be released….I think they’ll keep him!

  14. Manning is going to be a shell of his old self. Life long Colt fan but it’s time for Colts to move on. You can’t tell me he won’t be playing with the thoughts of getting hit in the head area. He’s going to be very tentative and he will be throwing the ball much sooner to avoid the hits. Sad, but true.

  15. I say “bollocks” and “shenanigans” on this “report.” There is nothing preventing Manning from scheduling his own workout and taping it. And Manning has yet to seek a meeting with Irsay to discuss matters like an incentive-laden deal or pushing the March 8 deadline back. Despite what Saturday and other media cronies for Team Manning claim, the guy isn’t anywhere near ready to pass a legitimate team physical – which involves a whole lot more than getting a clean bill of health from his own doctors that he chose and paid handsomely – or go through the type of passing drill that the QBs going to the NFL combine are going to have to do. This is news precisely because the start of free agency is March 13th. As teams fill up their cap rooms rather quickly after the start of free agency, Manning and his team would have found a way around this CBA rule (again, by going to one of the many athlete training centers, such as the ones that help prep QBs for the draft, throwing for THEM, and letting THEM tape the workout) by now were in his interests to do so. It isn’t because he isn’t ready to throw yet, so that is why he has to rely on using his media mouthpieces.

It may not be until after the draft when Manning is able to pass an NFL team physical (which will involve testing the strength, movement radius, pain threshold and reflexes of his arm and shoulder, not just taking X-rays of his neck) or convince an NFL team that his arm strength is back – or mostly back – in a legitimate passing workout drill. Any team that is willing to sit around and wait on Manning that long (with no guarantee of actually getting him!) instead of trying to fill the position through the draft or other free agents … well let’s just say that I hope that it works out for them.

  16. Something else that’s really strange is, during todays broadcast of the combine on the NFL network the crew plus Jeff Saturday talk specifically about the new GM and HC not seeing Peyton throw. Funny thing is the crew ask Jeff Saturday if he thought this was an indication Peyton wouldn’t be back with the Colts. Jeff Saturday responded ” I don’t think that says anything because why woory about that until March 8th?” Now you would think with the NFL network supposingly the official network of the NFL and Saturday being closely involved in the new CBA one of them would have known of the new rule.

  17. So if Peyton can throw and assuming Peyton would want the Colts to see how well he can throw, why wouldn’t Peyton just post a video on some social media web site? Or do the Colts have to close there eyes whenever Peyton pops up in their field of view? This is completely silly!

The Colts can always ask the Patriots for a copy of their video tape…

First they might want to ask how the Patriots won 10 games and missed the playoffs by the tie-breaker with Matt Noodle-Arm Cassel as QB for the full season. 😉

  19. Not that his agent would allow it or he would even want to but is it against the cba for manning to tape his own workout or throwing session and release it to media outlets?

  20. Even if Manning can’t play, wouldn’t you want someone of his caliber around to teach your #1 overall pick QB of the future how things are done? I certainly would want better tutelage for Luck than his dad, and Manning’s been earning that 28mil payday since he was drafted.

  21. “maybe if manning would decrease his outrageous demands on the signing bonus,”

The bonus is not a Manning demand! It’s his contract that Irsay signed him to. He signed him to that contract knowing that he had neck/nerve issues.

  22. Did anyone ever stop to think maybe PM doesn’t want to play for the Colts anymore. Let’s face it, he’s driven by wanting to win another Super Bowl, to at least catch his brother, and if he stays with the Colts, is that really a viable possibility?
I think not. The Colts were headed to the downside even before Manning’s surgeries. So, if I were him I’d be looking for the best team out there with a real chance…and there’s probably at least 10. Let the bidding begin.

  23. Hey jackm79. Why would Luck need to be tought by peyton for? Didn’t curtis painter and jim sorgi get tought by peyton? And didn’t they SUCK?!! That’s why u hire a veteran coaching staff for. Offensive coordinator n qb coach.and head coach. They are the ones that will show Luck the ropes!

  24. I’m sure that if Irsay actually had interest in paying $28 mil, the fine for breaking this ridiculous rule would be well worth it.

On another note, the players probably insisted on that silly wokout rule because the benefit of getting a March 8 roster bonus (as opposed to say, May 8) is that teams have to pay up or cut a guy BEFORE free agency. It gives the players a chance to hit FA early. With this rule, teams will start insisting on later dates for payments.

Cassell doesn’t need Manning to teach him anything. Nobody taught Peyton.

Umm, both Mannings had a teacher from birth. Maybe you’ve heard of Archie Manning? Like Peyton, he was a QB, and the only player on his team worth a damn.
What’s that, Luck’s dad was a QB too? How’d he do?

  26. Bottom line is, no one has offered up a timeline for the Big Guy’s return. Sure PFT says 2012, but they are putting words into Jeff Saturday’s mouth. Show me where he said 2012?

  27. Stop all this talk about Peyton wanting to be back wiht the Colts but not offering to give the Colts the proof that he can play next year prior to getting the 28 million. This is a plain old money deal and all this Colts loyalty is just so much baloney. No big deal but why all the smoke about Peyton’s loyalty?

  28. How can the slappies still be talking about Manning playing this season? The Swamp Boy is done. He was done last year and he still stole $28 from the Colts. And now he’s trying to steal more.
From anybody foolish enough to give it to him.
Greedy. Swamp. Boy. Done. Done. Done.
