Friday could be franchise tag day

With five days remaining until the window for applying the franchise tag closes, no player has been on the receiving end of a pair of multi-million-dollar handcuffs.

It’s inevitable that Ravens running back Ray Rice will receive the franchise tender.  A league source tells PFT that Rice’s camp specifically anticipates getting the tag on Friday.

The thinking is that the Ravens won’t want to deal with the matter over the weekend, and that they don’t want to wait until the final day, in order to avoid any type of a last-minute screw-up.

Another benefit could come from relative lack of media coverage that comes from things that happen on a Friday afternoon.  To the extent that Rice would react negatively to being restricted by the one-year contract, the controversy would generate less overall publicity, since the situation will melt into the weekend and emerge with a much duller edge come Monday.

For those reasons, Friday afternoon could be the target for the bulk of the franchise tags to fly.  Which means that you’ll need to be mashing the F5 button while otherwise pretending to work as the train glides lazily into the station on another week of marginal productivity.

  1. I hope the Eagles place the franchise tag on DeSean Jackson if they can’t resign him before then.

  2. Many players will complain a good bit about being slapped with the franchise tag. From how the media portrays it, however, Ray Rice is understanding with the Raven’s financial situation and won’t hold out for leverage. What a great player, wish he was on my team

Similar to waiting until the last second to submit your draft pick and screwing that up…

  4. Ravens will tag Rice because he plays a position prone to injury, Rice should hold out for a long term deal. I thought Forte should have held out absent a better deal for him to, when he took that gruesome looking injury I felt bad the guy got low balled by his team. Luckily Forte was back quick though, but teams that tag running backs that account for so much of their offense annoy me even though I understand it’s financially smart to do it.

  5. Even is DJax gets the Franchise tag, I’m pretty sure he’s as good as gone.

Notice how all the DJax jerseys are 50% off in the Philly area?
