Redskins plan to sign a high-profile receiver

AP

The Washington Redskins never hesitate to spend big in free agency, and this year they appear set to devote significant money to the wide receiver position.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins are making plans to add a high-profile free-agent receiver.

Vincent Jackson would apparently be high on the Redskins’ list, if the Chargers don’t slap the franchise tag on him. Pierre Garcon, who turned down an offer of a contract extension from the Colts, is another option. Other possibilities for the Redskins include Reggie Wayne, Marques Colston, Stevie Johnson, Plaxico Burress and Mario Manningham.

The availability of several starting wide receivers in free agency should make it easy for the Redskins to upgrade the position. The bigger question of who will throw to the Redskins’ receivers remains unanswered.

  1. Pierre Garcon? One of the worst receivers in the NFL last year. That’s not the high profile I want.

  2. if you sign flynn/manning, you should try and get justin blackmon out of oklahoma state in the draft. that guy is going to be a stud wide receiver.

  3. How about adding a QB first. No matter who the “high profile” receiver is, you got to have a QB to throw them the ball. Most of those guys on this list are not “high profile”. Johnson could be if he didn’t drop so many balls when it matters. HTTR!

  4. Except the last two years with Shanny and Allen in charge right? They have been smart in FA and the draft the last two years. Dan is in the background and the grown ups are making the decision. Of your list though VJax is the only one I would want.

  5. Mario M? Garcon? High Profile???? What are you talking about?!

This article should only include VJAX or Bowe…SKINS ARE THE NEXT LEVEL and a much larger market and tougher conf. than these guys are used to….

  6. I think the plan is pretty clear. I’m sure in a few days it will also come out that the Skins are also targeting a high-profile offensive lineman. And a few days after that it will come out that they will probably bring in a couple of solid but not spectacular players to fill in gaps at safety and corner. Then, a few weeks later, we will hear about Washington sending about a half dozen picks over the next 2 years to the Rams. In the end you’ve upgraded QB, WR and Oline while adding some competion in the secondary.

While I agree he’s not the most attractive option for the Skins, calling Garcon one of the worst receivers in the league last year is just dumb. Look at his stats: 70 rec, 947 yards, 6 TD’s. In comparison, Gaffney had: 68 rec, 947 yards, 5 TD’s.

  8. When is the last time Shanahan had a winning season? Seriously, it has got to be 4-5 years. This mutt needs to take his sorry a ss son and get lost. He can’t win without Elway and may be the most over hyped coach in NFL history. Synder will never win until he stops wasting time and money bringing in washed up retreds. From Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders to McNabb and Shanahan, Synder seems to be stuck in a time warp.

  9. Markie Mark Maske as is Jason Reid and Mike Jones and all the other tools that write for the WP are all worthless…you think the sports team in the Nations Capitol are bad the sports writers and reporters are worse…

That being said look for V Jax to be the man…

  10. So let me get this straight; The Redskins never hesitate to spend big but according to the link on cap room from the top 51 players posted earlier the Skins had the third LEAST committed? Which one is it?

I understand the Redskin bashing…they have been terrible for over a decade and Snyder has done a lot of dumb things. (Not just with player signings).

However, as a journalist, you should avoid contradicting yourself with articles posted 5 hours apart. Perhaps a line of ‘Redskins preparred to return to their high spending ways’?

  11. burgundyandgold said “They [Redskins] have been smart in FA and the draft the last two years…”

Dude, put down the crack pipe. These dopes traded a high draft pick for McNabb for christ sake! They then went into last season with Rex Grossman and John Beck as their starters. Now they are talking ablout bringing in a WR when they have nobody who can throw the ball? PLEASE!

Dopey Synder’s plan is most likely to bring back Doug Williams at QB (only if he can’t talk slinging Sammie Baugh out of retirement)! The Redskins will remain the laughing stock of the NFC East until Synder sells the team (or dies).

  12. Again, the stereotype of this organization continues. Vinny Cerrato is gone, and Dan Snyder has taken a back seat, so the overspending no longer exists. The skins will spend on FA’s that make sense for need, and chemistry for this team. The GM is frugal, and will not give away money like years past. You have stated the obvious. The skins are in desperate need of a game changing #1 receiver. This organization has not had one for a very long time. So it only makes sense for them to spend on of these FA WR’s, because they will be giving up some early draft picks to get RGIII, and a young stud WR will not be on the board by the time they pick again in the draft.

  13. It’s always funny to me the negative and sarcastic comments that appear on a Redskins articles where non-Redskin fan comment the most. We call those (closet fans). The truth of the matter is that Free Agency starts before the NFL draft, not the other way around If it was the other way wrong, the Redskins would be criticized for drafting a QB in the 1st rd and he has no one to throw too. Therefore, every team is in a position to sign players who they feel will benefit their team short term and/or long term. The QB situation will work itself out rather its Manning, Orton, Flynn or through the draft with RG3, Tannehill, Kellen Moore or Russell Wilson. The Skins are in the top 5 in regards to the most salary cap space which ONLY changed because Vinny was out and Bruce Allen/Shanahan was in. DeAngelo was paid before the new regime and Trent Williams & Landry were top 10 picks paid under the old CBA. You will not find another high priced or overpaid player. The team has been playing more inspired over the past few years, despite their record and despite lacking weapons on the offense to compete in the NFC East. The QB play is the biggest loop-hole. That should change this year being that QB and WR and a few OL-men will have the team relevant once again. We are not going to give any of these WRs Fitzgerald, Calvin or Andre Johnson money so let’s not get too carried away.

How about when is the last time you turned on a television set?

How about come up with an original thought or idea instead of ripping off what everyone else who doesn’t know anything about football says?

  15. I think they should try like heck to get Colston. The way New Orleans spreads the ball around to so many good guys, his stats aren’t outrageous, but this guy can catch! In the Redskins offense he would be the Number 1 WR and his numbers will reflect it. That, along with the emergence of Leonard Hankerson, and they’ll have 2 real good receivers. And if they get Reggie Wayne, that helps convince Peyton manning to come, then there you go!!! Playoff contention for the next 3-5 seasons….Because you’ll still have the draft picks to get a RT, Safety, and Corner help! Done!

“Redskins never hesitate”….I guess last year doesn’t count.

Look, I’m as sick of hearing that crap as anyone… it just goes to show how difficult it is to shake a bad reputation when you worked as hard on it as Dan Snyder did.

  17. Garcon isn’t high profile WR, he had his best year without Peyton, this is a colts fan here and he drops more balls than anybody and had his best games against lame defenses, Wayne at his age is more profile than Gar-bage

  18. Why? Santana can still get it done and Hankerson is poised for stardom. Add some solid depth, if anything. Besides, WR isn’t what’s been holding back the Redskins.

  19. they never learn…. you build a winning team from within. New England, Pittsburgh and Green Bay come to mind.

  20. Has anyone caught onto the train yet?

They ALWAYS sign high profile players, not just receivers.

Anyone that is washed up in the twilight of their career is a guarantee for Dan Synder’s fantasy football team.

  21. Maybe its Wayne and Peyton to follow, my dream sinario as a colts fan is trade Peyton to deadskins for their 1ststandards round pick, I can dream can’t I?

Looks like someone drafted him last year in their Fantasy league.

  23. “Has anyone caught onto the train yet?

Bro, I’m pretty sure everyone got on that train in 2001, and then got off it after around 2005 or 2006. The last high profile free agent the redskins signed was Albert Haynesworth, three years ago. Granted, it turned out really badly, but maybe you should “catch onto the train” and know what you’re talking about before you run your mouth, also maybe you should catch onto the train that you nobody has ever used the phrase “catch onto the train” before. I guess it’s kind of like jumping onto a bandwagon. Except you’re using it in the exact opposite sense. I guess basically what I’m getting at here is that you don’t know a lot about football and you’re bad at writing.

  24. Yeh, don’t sleep on Hankerson. Provided he can stay healthy, he’s going to develop nicely. Got no problems w/ Jax or Manningham.

Not interested in Colts. I would gather they’re more a product of their previous QB.

  25. i hope it’s colston.i would’nt mind signing plaxico to a three year deal with incentives deal either.he could help us greatly in the red zone.i’ll pass on manningham, vjax, wayne and garcon.
