Connor Barth became the fifth kicker to receive the franchise tag this season on Monday afternoon.
The Buccaneers announced their decision shortly before Monday’s deadline to use the tag, all but ensuring Barth will be kicking for them come September. The move has been expected for some time as Tampa was in no hurry to say goodbye to the most consistent kicker in the history of the franchise.
Barth has made 84 percent of his field goals since signing with the team during the 2009 season. He was particularly sharp in the 2011 season with 26 makes in 28 attempts, including 2-of-3 tries from 50 yards or more. Barth has never missed an extra point since coming to Tampa.
Barth -- like Mike Nugent, Phil Dawson, Matt Prater and Josh Scobee -- will receive around $2.6 million if he signs the franchise tender. He and the Buccaneers are expected to keep working toward a long-term deal, though.
UPDATE: Dawson actually will make $3.8 million under the tag by virtue of being tagged as the Browns’ franchise player in 2011 as well.
