Eli calls bounties “a big deal,” says Goodell will make sure they stop

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has weighed in on the Saints’ bounty scandal.

Manning, who was on the receiving end of a roughing the passer penalty when the Giants played the Saints last season, said Monday that he’s concerned about the stories that former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams bounties to players for knocking opponents out of games.

Obviously it is a big deal, what’s going on,” Manning told the New York Post. “It’s not good for football and can’t be a part of football.”

Manning said he’s confident that the league office will put an end to bounties around the league.

“I know Roger Goodell will do a good job figuring all this out and making sure this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Although Manning realizes that every team, including the Giants, talks about hitting the quarterback, he said he draws the line at trying to take the quarterback out of the game.

“When you start talking about injuring a guy and carting him off and trying to end his season or career, that’s not what this game is about,” Manning said. “I think we should have more respect for the game than that. It can’t be a part of football.”

  1. “I think we should have more respect for the game than that. It can’t be a part of football.”

Exactly, and respect for your fellow player, or “brother”, as the union would say.

  2. Well said Eli…the only team I feel that hitting the QB for injury is necessary would be the Eagles. For all the smack that is talked from Philfy-Delphia I feel it is well deserved.

Just remember some stats Eagles fans:

    NFC East Superbowl Victory Breakdown:

    Cowgirls- 5 Lombardi Trophies
    Giants- 4 Lombardi Trophies
    Redskins- 3 Lombardi Trophies
    Eagles- Empty trophy case

  3. Uh Oh, little Eli spoke. I guess Roger might make a big deal out of this because it has the attention of a NY Team (probably because they didn’t think of it first).

For what it’s worth, G. Williams should be banned for life and Payton should be suspended for 1 year.

  4. Ya … It will stop . Just Like McDaniel Stopped in Denver with Spygate…

Now He has to deal with McVideo back in the Kraft Den….

    Good Luck

  5. I bet on Favre’s Vikings that NFC Championship game. Think I can get my money back?

  6. ELI, BRADY, Steve young, farve , Warner, etc… All yall are bunch of cry babies!! It’s football. It’s already a violent sport in a whole wide world. Players get their knee blown out without even getting tackled by another player. Players break their ankles just by running real hard, torn Achilles etc.
Bounties in my opinion is just a tactic. It’s motivational to some players. Maybe they don’t need a thousand bucks here or ten grand
But it’s just a way to get players active and productive.
It’s not a big deal. I mean look at roethlesberger last year Michael Vick, Joe flacco, colt McCoy …I mean this players was knocked around the field all the time an get hit violently and they knew it’s part of the game. Stop it all ready. Bunch of cry babies.

  7. Everyone in the NFL are targets of this so called bounty! Heck
It’s not just qb it’s the linemen too, the punter the place kicker even the referees get hit on their crouch and it is not that big of a deal.

  8. Wow again with all the Eli hate you can all hate him till they give him that nice yellow jacket in Canton one day.

This guy is a pro player and if someone takes him out due to a bounty he is unemployeed

Think for a moment in your small meaningless lifes if someone made it so you could no longer work and there was no money suppporting you or your family?

I have no idea why there is so much hate for Eli
Is it because of the draft day deal get over it the Chargers thought they got the better part of that deal. We all know they did not but that is the business side of the game.

  9. It’s one thing being knocked about the field, but getting “extra” in a pot for doing it, I don’t think so.
That’s not what the game is all about. These guys get enough money, without having a “pot” in the locker room, for sending someone out of the game.
I hope the people involved get suspensions, fines & draft picks taken away. Just wait for it, Gregg Williams is for the “high jump” and he deserves everything coming to him.

  10. @ifyouthinkofgarbagethinkofakeem

It’s not a real strong argument when you pick two of the bigger crybabies at qb. Big Ben, especially early in his career, would blame losses on injuries. Not to mention him being butthurt that Haley hasn’t contacted him. Then there’s Vick who loves running when the play breaks down, but complains to the refs on the field when he gets a ‘late hit’ out of bounds. Eli got enhiliated throughout the playoffs and never missed a game or said a peep. In this case Eli was asked a direct question and he answered it. With both rings.

  12. This is the last thing any of us need. Goodell is on a quest to turn this into a two hand touch league and this is just the kind of ammo he needs. Now anytime a player takes a rough hit theres going to be a witchhunt. The bounty thing is downright stupid. These guys are all warriors in the same struggle.

None of them should be happy about intentionally injuring one another and ruining a mans career. People have families and most of these guys wouldnt know what to do with themselves if their career ended early. Bad job by the Saints on this one

Put yourself in it. You’re playing football in the park with some buddies against another bunch of guys. Unknown to you, the following conversation takes place:

Opponent 1: I’ll give you a grand if you tear ifyouthinkofgarbage’s ACL.
    Opponent 2: You’re on.

#2 drills you in the knee on the very next play. After you arrive at the ER with the torn ACL, your buddies come in and tell you about the $1000. Are you still thinking “it’s football”?

  14. While your at Eli… tell your defense to stop faking injuries to slow down the no huddle. That’s also not good for football.

  15. Quit whining Eli. You’re just sour because the Saints handed you your a$$ last season in the Superdome. Hell you even whined about the team that drafted you. So that team, the chargers had to trade you off to the Giants where you wanted to be. Poor little baby. And your brother Peyton is a whiner too. He can’t even throw the football anymore. Probably from all those “remember me” shots he took in SB 44 from the Saints “Bounty Boys”! Ha Ha. The Saints single handedly retired Kurt Warner, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning in a row in route to our SB championship. That’s never been done before. The rest of the world just can’t take it so they concoct up some lame-brain story about bounties. Ha Ha. That’s funny. Bounty or no bounty the Saints will host and win the SB in New Orleans this season. Geaux Saints!

  16. “Uh Oh, little Eli spoke.”

“little Eli”? The guy’s net worth is north of $60 million and he has TWO Super Bowl MVPs. Please entertain all of us with a list of your “amazing” accomplishments.

  17. Count on the People’s Commisioner Roger Goodell to bring justice and round up the criminal elements of the NFL. Greatest sports commisioner in the history of mankind.

  18. I still can’t understand all the Eli haters, Eli is the opitamy of a class act, his accomplishments speak for themselves. I guess you have to get arrested in the NFL to get looked up to.

  19. Eli is the man!!!! All you clowns on here are just jealous. Your teams all suck. Jealousy is a terrible thing. Makes you all look like the cry babies that you are. ELI IS THE NEW FACE AND VOICE OF THE NFL!! Can’t wait for his 3rd, 4th, and 5th championships!!! Top of the World Baby!!! Go Blue!!!!

  20. Ifyouthinkgarbage said “Bounties in my opinion is just a tactic. It’s motivational to some players. Maybe they don’t need a thousand bucks here or ten grand”

Are you on welfare? You have no idea about inspiration. If you think these guys must need a few extra bucks to get motivated, then you must be one of the entitled generation. Multi-millionaires playing the game of football in front of friends, family and millions of fans should be enough.

  21. The darlings of the south are getting bounced on by everyone now. Oh God-del you better make it a good one this time.

  22. This bounty crap has gotten way out of control…some of the best and NFL legal hits that have knocked players from games weren’t bounties…football is violent and physical by nature the big hit is the highlight of the game for the D and as long as it’s within the rules of the game…do you think LT had a bounty for Theismann when he snapped his leg? I don’t think so check out his reaction after the play…bottom line the offense plays to score and embarrass the defense and the defense plays aggressive and to inflict pain and fear on the offense this is the game and if there is no sure fire proof of dirty hits/play then just put an end to the whole bounty mess and lets move on.

  23. @salmen…….you really need to get a life. Unreal how nuts your comments are!! Your starting to make the Packer lady fan who choked her own daughter because the Packets lost, look good!

  24. Eli continues to strengthen his grip on the “Least Interesting Player in the NFL” award.

  25. Anyone that thinks this bounty situation isnt a big deal and is just used as motivation is just an inconsiterate piece of sh it. There is a difference between using money as motivation to make a clean play and using money as motivation to take someone out of the game by injuring them. Any player and or coach that was a part of this should be banned from the NFL. I love the big hard hits in the NFL but when your talking about injuring other players on purpose. Its just wrong and needs to be disciplined to the extreme.

  26. Hey Eli. The Midgets have bounties as well. Might want to verify things before you comment.

  27. people hate Eli cause he’s the real life mr.bean, accomplishes incredible things by bumbling around and not earning it… only it’s funny on film and annoying in real life when guys like Dan Marino/Jim Kelly can’t win superbowls, yet this doofus continues getting rings…
nothing against the giants, they’ve got an awesome group of Pass Rushers.

  28. The money is merely a token, with the worth of a parking stub.

It’s actually ego and team driven, accomplish the personal and team goal as set out by the coach.

Just remember the Mets did win the world series. Eagles still have ZERO!!! And yes the Jets even have 1. Eagles still have ZERO!!!

  30. Some of the posters on here are just dumb…

So Eli is bitter that he lost to the Saints last year in the regular season? I’m sure the current Super Bowl MVP is still upset about a regular season loss……..

Eli makes a great point here, while there are salary cap and tax issues (I’m sure these guys are not claiming this extra income but maybe Williams was deducting the expense) there is nothing ethically wrong with “I’ll give you $1,000 if you sack him on this drive.” or “we need a stop, $1,500 for a turnover on this drive.” There is however a line drawn when the goal is to injure someone. The issue to me arises when you start talking about “Carting him off the field” or “Taking him out of the game.”

I wonder if the people who say this isn’t a big deal are the same people who hated the bad guy from karatie kid for trying to take out Johnny’s bad leg?

  31. In response to my own typo it was Johnny sweeping Daniel’s bad leg….

  32. bottom line the offense plays to score and embarrass the defense and the defense plays aggressive and to inflict pain and fear on the offense this is the game and if there is no sure fire proof of dirty hits/play then just put an end to the whole bounty mess and lets move on.

I don’t know about you, but when the DC (Williams) admits to it, and the bulk of his players (except Sharper) admit to it, that constitutes “sure fire proof” in my book.

  33. Since when do we care what little eli has to say, I mean, he probably asked his dad to know what to say.

Guess what team I’m a fan of ?

    =================================
Many NFL players need all the cash they can get. Despite all the money they make, they still are broke.

  35. Great comments Eli. Any player who needs motivation to intentionally cause bodily harm is sick in the head, just like Williams. I hope R Goodell throws the book at EVERYONE involved. They deserve severe punishment. In the real world ASSAULT is a criminal offense punishable with jail time. These players and coaches/management should thank their lucky stars for suspensions and fines.

  36. I love it, cause here are the dirty saints, and they got punched for a ko against the 49ers lol….. Big bad bully got decked

  37. When I was in the army on my way to serving in Vietnam, there was training about what was legal and illegal. If the officer said the very common expression, “Take no prisoners,” we were supposed to ask him if he meant to say that we should shoot enemies that surrender. To force the officer to clarify that he was ordering us to do something illegal, because “following orders” is not an acceptable defense.

So “punch them in the mouth” does not really mean to punch the opponent in the mouth and take out the opposing QB does not mean to actual injure him. If players are told to take out an opposing QB, they should question their coach as to what that really means. Each player should remain accountable for their own actions during a game.
