49ers say they’re not even thinking about Peyton, but open to Moss

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss smiles during team warm-ups in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in this October 11, 2010 file picture. Record-setting wide receiver Randy Moss was retiring after 13 National Football League seasons, his agent said on August 1, 2011. The 34-year-old Moss, who holds the record for the most touchdown catches in an NFL season and the most by a rookie, had considered playing on but decided it was time to call it quits. Although there appears to be nothing imminent between the 49ers and soon-to-be free agent quarterback Alex Smith, the 49ers’ front office says that bringing back Smith is the focus of the franchise -- and that signing Peyton Manning hasn’t even been discussed.

“We haven’t had Peyton in here nor are we even talking about those things internally right now,” 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke said on KNBR, via the Sacramento Bee. “Is he going to play? I don’t know. That’s for the doctors to make the decision on and for him himself.”

Baalke wasn’t as quick to shut down talk of potentially bringing Randy Moss to San Francisco.

“Everything’s in play. I mean, we’re going to take a look at all our options,” Balke said of Moss. “We’re not going to rule anybody out.”

But all indications are that, despite what Jerry Rice may think, the 49ers are ready to rule out Manning.
