With cap number unknown, DeSean can’t sign franchise tender

Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson sees the franchise tag as something other than a pair of golden handcuffs.  And he said last Friday that he’ll be happy to put his hands behind his back and allow the bracelets to be applied.

But he still hasn’t signed the franchise tender.  And for good reason.

He can’t.

Per a league source, the franchise tenders haven’t officially been extended to players like Jackson, who’ll be getting the non-exclusive amount for receivers (expected to be in the range of $9.4 million).  The tenders haven’t been extended because the amount can’t be determined.  The amount can’t be determined because the number is based on a percentage of the unadjusted salary cap.

And teams still don’t know, less than five days before the start of free agency, the amount of the salary cap.  It’s something we’ve pointed out a few times this week, and with each passing hour it becomes more remarkable that the 32 teams don’t know what the 2012 spending limit will be.

  1. There must be some understanding of the cap number, how can the league expect the teams to function when they do not have any idea of the spending limit ?

  2. He needs to put on a few pounds, every time I see him going over the middle I’m afraid it will be the last thing he ever does

  3. It’s annoying to me that the NFL expects all teams to be under the cap by 4 pm on the 13th, yet they wait until the last minute to release the cap numbers. WE’RE STILL WAITING!!

Absolutely ridiculous that the league is taking this long.

How appropriate with all the athletes getting arrested lately.

  5. How can the NFL penalize teams for not being under the cap with less than a weeks notice to get there? Even teams busting ass to reduce their cap could be caught with their pants around their ankles at this point. Seems wrong if you ask me…

  6. I could care less about Desean right now, but who in the league office is screwing up the cap numbers? This is beyond absurd. How could you possibly impose cap penalties right now if you don’t even know what the cap is? This should have been sorted out a very long time ago.

  7. Word on the street is the cap number was known a month ago, but the Cowboys tried to cram more into it so it’s doubtful it’ll be ready in 5 days and players will have to sign their tenders in the parking lot…

  8. This has to be the stupidest thing the NFL is doing.

Drag out a calculator and figure out the cap. Stop delaying.

It’s embarrassing that they can’t do simple math. The formula is in the CBA.

  9. Meanwhile the league keeps “wagging the dog” with the bounty-gate stuff to keep people from asking what’s up with the cap and the owners in damage control for taking too much of the NFL pie.

  10. yes because making 9.5 million dollars is the same as being locked up. i’m sorry d jax us normal people would happily take 9.5 mill .. most players in the nfl would be lucky to get that there whole career.. i cant wait for the eagles to trade you and watch you rot .. when you lose ur speed … which will happen you will become irrelevant

  11. We don’t need a cap, teams are not gonna spend anyway. Did you see anyone break the bank in 2010 when there wasn’t one? The Bears got Peppers, big whoop.

  12. This is getting out of control, how sloppy is this going to get, pull out your calculators and the formula and figure out the cap so all the teams and players can move along, there is less than a week before FA and teams have to make sure they are under a cap # of which they do not know (what are my Bucs supposed to do? Oh yeah they havent spent any money in years), I hope they dont plan on giving out cap penalties

Wow, you know that’s what Jackson obviously (to everyone but you) meant with his tongue in cheek analogy.

    Good job Rog!!

    FAIL!

League is going to shat under his watch!

  15. It’s funny how many people don’t read the article before posting. It’s like a microcosm of what’s wrong with the media world.
