The Broncos aren’t trying to hide their desire to acquire Peyton Manning. But if they’re successful, what does that mean for Tim Tebow?
The knee-jerk reaction is that Tebow would take a seat on the bench and learn plenty from Peyton, who would possibly be able to communicate with Tebow in the same way Manning talked to those kids in that United Way spoof on SNL.
Maybe it will take someone like Peyton to tell Tebow that lifting all them weights is screwing up his throwing motion. (After all, Peyton performed at a very high level despite having the physique of a 10-year-old boy.) And maybe Peyton can otherwise tutor Tebow in the art of becoming a true quarterback.
Or maybe not. Maybe this is the permanent Tebow solution, with Manning taking over and Tebow taking a hike.
If that’s the case, trading him to the guy who drafted him -- Josh McDaniels -- won’t be an option. McDaniels is currently the offensive coordinator in New England. Unless Tebow plans to play fullback, he won’t be playing for the Pats.
And so perhaps in the end the owner who said that he would have drafted Tebow in 2010 will get a shot at getting the guy who will allow the tarps to be put in mothballs.
“One hundred percent I would have,” Jags owner Shad Khan said last month. “Absolutely. . . . Obviously the Rams drafted Sam Bradford, and I was talking to Wayne [Weaver] then on what they ought to do. . . .
“Some of the stuff might not be politically correct, but I share your sentiment. I think, when is the next time Jacksonville is going to have an athlete like Tim Tebow?”
If Manning goes to Denver, Jacksonville still can.
Yes, this is a damn interesting offseason.
