Martellus Bennett looks forward to becoming a No. 1 tight end

The tight end position has taken on renewed importance in the NFL, thanks to stellar seasons from Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski.  But with a relatively weak draft class, teams interested in adding capable bodies at the position may have to rely on free agency.

One guy who’ll be available when the market opens is Martellus Bennett.  He joined PFT Live on Friday, four days before becoming a free agent and one day before his 25th birthday.

Bennett said he’s ready to step out of Jason Witten’s shadow.

I want to be the No. 1 guy,” Bennett said during the show, via Clarence E. Hill, Jr. of the Fort Worth Star Telegram.  “I feel like I’m a 60-catch-plus guy on a team, so I want to be in a system where I could do [that].  I think a lot of people say the hybrid tight ends or the new type of tight ends are the ones to catch the ball, but I think the perfect tight ends are the ones who could actually block and do things with the ball after they catch it.”

Bennett also said that players from the Bears, Bucs, and Dolphins have been trying to get him interested in joining their teams.  (If it comes from players not acting at the direction of the coaching staff or management, it’s not tampering.)
Regardless, it became pretty clear that the second-round pick from the 2008 draft won’t be a Cowboy for much longer.

  1. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a No 1 TE. I’ve watched every game this guy played. The Cowboys were stupid for refusing Cincy’s offer for a No 1 pick for this ass a few yrs ago.

  2. Looking forward to Marty B leaving Dallas. He’s lazy, uninspired, and unfocused. Instead of learning with Witten he let a 3rd stringer John Phillips, steal his spot. Maybe if he becomes a #1 TE he’ll play smarter and better… I just don’t think so. See ya Marty B. Good riddance my dude.

  3. maybe he can go to Indy and be the Colts go to TE. ok seriously now, honestly, he has to improve to be that. he’s too inconsistant.

  4. Hahahahahah! Marty B got jokes. As a Dallas fan, that’s the best thing I’ve seen out of him since he was drafted

  5. Yea ok, keep looking Marty…Watched you during your entire time in Dallas and you never shined at any moment. Maybe stick with you stupid internet blogging and attention seeking…On the positive side I won’t have to see his stupid blogging report in the Cowboys STAR magazine anymore…good god.. If he has anything going for him it’s that he is still young and is decent at blocking..That’s about it.

  6. He could play DB with all the balls he bats down.

    He can’t catch a cold.

    Roberto Duran II…hands of stone.

Dumb as a box of rocks.

He makes Haynesworth look like a hardworker.

    Any more???

  7. Bennett is a great blocker. But great blocking TE’s are post draft FA’s.

Marty has the B word becsuse of the round selected. He is still useful and he will probably get more money than he deserves because there is always one team that pays for ‘potential’.

  8. This guy could not catch a pass if it was handed to him and he was wearing velcro gloves and the ball was made from velcro. He makes the Cowboys a better team the minute he is no longer on the roster.

  9. Hot Garbage!!! He’s more like a 4th string Tight End. Yep…and read this Martellus…not just as a motivational piece, but to help you get your head out you ass!!!

  10. If he’s as good as he says he is, I’m pretty sure Jason Garrett would’ve put more 2 TE sets into the game plans.

  11. He’s got the size and physical attributes. But he seems lazy and doesn’t make anything happen when he gets chances. Can’t catch, can’t run routes, gets penalized…. He could have learned from one of the best TE’s in the game, but he apparently didn’t.

  12. Dude always has been and always will be an idiot in addition to being a horrible player.

  13. I feel like I’m a Colin Ferrell type ladies man.

But it’s only when I’m really drunk.

In actuality, I’m more like Colin Hanks.

And as far as tight ends go….Martellus Bennett is more like Colin Hanks too.

  14. Yeah, he’s the #1 TE on the next episode of his newest creation of ‘Marty B TV’!!!!!!!!!!

    Career: 85 balls in 60 games = #1 TE????????

    He’s not even a blocker!!!!!!!!!!

Just skip him over, get a small guy, and place him at slot receiver!!!!!!!! Tight ends DON’T block anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. 60+ rec? haha! thats like felix scoring 10+ rush tds! I wonder how much $$$ hurd made off this guy? soooo glad he’s on his way out!

  16. I had high hopes for this kid when we drafted him back in ’08. He never rose to the potential I saw and he made some embarrassing gaffes both on and off the field while constantly churning out mediocre play.

He is a low-effort guy who plays below his athletic abilities and he has stone hands. Big money contracts don’t make the light go on for guys like that, and it isn’t a “system” issue like his comments suggest. The staff here was willing to give him the ball but he underperformed most every time they called his number. Good luck, Bennett, but good riddance as well.

  17. As a Cowboys fan, I say Good Riddance. He’s not nearly as good a player as he thinks.

  18. Don’t let the doorknob hit you on the way out Marty.

He wants to be a #1 target but he doesn’t want to work hard or do anything to deserve it. He just wants to be handed significant playing time and 100 targets a year (if not more, since he’ll drop half the passes he gets), but he doesn’t seem to get that no one gives you anything in the NFL, you have to earn it. I don’t think he’ll catch 60 passes in his CAREER

  19. This guy is a complete waste of talent. All I remember about Martellus, (at one point, I thought Dallas would have the best TE tandem duo of all-time) is that he is very childish and it really showed up on the field. His mind never really seemed to be 100% focused on the game and he consistently dropped balls, ran around aloof, and was flat out embarrassing at times. He definitely didn’t give 100% to Dallas and if someone were willing to pay this guy anymore than 1.5-2.0$, I assume they would be paying him for his lockerroom entertainment value and not his football ability. If it were true that Dallas was offered a #1 in exchange for MB, from the Bengals, that may go down as one of the biggest blunders JJ has ever made.

  20. I keep picturing those old guy muppets sitting in the balcony talking about Bennett “boy, Martellus Bennett can’t catch a break” “have you seen him play? He can’t catch anything!” “Oh-haw haw haw haw!”

  21. Marty B doesn’t want to earn the #1, he just wants someone to hand it to him because he says he’ll be good at it. Waste of good draft pick.
